LHAC Football Preview 2012.

Football season is fast approaching, and it will be August before you know it. This is an exciting time for the entire country, especially Western Pennsylvania. This is the second annual Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference preview done by myself, and it is something I hope will build into a tradition.  The coverage and passion that drives our area's athletics will only stand to get better. The arrival of the D6 Sports Network by some bright young minds in the area, and the constant talk of High School athletics on Bleachercoaches, along with the improving content by local newspapers and news stations will make the 2012 season one to remember, and one to build on.
The 2011 season was a memorable one and featured some very talented teams and individuals. The Johnstown Trojans marched on to another impressive run led by Division One recruits, Alkwan Williams(Temple), Gervon Simon(Army), and Brock Eisenhuth(Youngstown State). The 2012 Trojans have big shoes to fill, to say the least. The Richland Rams reached untouched heights of success in 2011, and look to add to that string of success this year. They will be without all everything Johnny Rizzo, but bring back plenty to the table. Bishop McCort losses a massive presence in Zach Rugg(UConn), but looks to some bright young talent to overcome the loss. Somerset and Cambria Heights showed off vast improvements, and may become serious contenders this time around. Forest Hills seemingly always reloads and will be ready to compete. Central Cambria looks to build off a monumental win over Johnstown, and bring more success into the 2012 campaign.
The names of 2011 are gone, Shippey, Gdula, Fuller, and Leech. Although, the talent this year may not rival that of 2011. The league is more wide open than ever, and as many Five teams can seriously compete for Laurel Highlands supremacy. There may not be as many talented college level players, but there may be more quality teams. I hope you enjoy this year's preview, and look to the D6 Sports Network for updated content all season long and as always keep the banter going on Bleachercoaches!

Section II

1. Richland Rams (10-3)
KEY Players-Matt Shaffer (QB). Kyle Flick (WR). Josh Dininny(DT)
Richland is coming off a very successful season by their standards. It was the first time they played for a District Title since 1986. The team was centered around star player Johny Rizzo. They relied upon the workhorse heavily, but were not totally dependent upon him. Junior Quarterback,  Matt Shaffer showed great poise for a sophomore and is one of the key returning factors for this year. He is a dual threat that can run it some, but will be used for passing more this season. Richland typically runs a pass happy offense and Shaffer should be able to control things. He is joined by some other talented juniors. Kyle Flick is coming off another successful season and will be entering his third season as Richland's featured Wide Receiver. He has great hands, and good speed and is athletic enough to create separation. His experience will make as dangerous as anyone in the league. Tanner Solarczyk will assume Running Back responsibilities. He is not a legitimate replacement for Rizzo, and how could he be? Rizzo was so valuable, but Solarczyk may be a good fit if Richland plans to throw it more because he is a fast open field threat.  Richland returns four starters on the offensive line that paved the way for a very lethal offense in 2011. The leader of the pack is Josh Dininny. He will also anchor the defense. Luke Shertzer and Kyle Flick will also play big roles for the defense.  This team is set with their Quarterback and top receiver, and an experienced line. They are coming off a successful season and will look to build upon it. I think Richland is the LHAC front runner, and one of the top competitors in the District for "AA".

2.  Bishop McCort (7-4)
KEY Players-Gap Barbin (NT) Jordan Spangler (WR) Dustin Belskey (RB)
Bishop McCort got off to a hot start in 2011, and finished rather cold. The Crimson Crushers faced injury and number problems all year long, and this year they will have more depth.  The Crushers must replace their Quarterback,Running Back, top Receivers, and a Division One Linemen. That is a tall order for anyone to overcome. The Crushers success will start up front with Gap Barbin. He anchors both sides of the ball and is one of the better interior linemen in the conference. He will be joined with some younger guys, but they are not short on size.  The Quarterback battle will be interesting between Nathan Neiderhiser (Jr) and Zaine Tomkowski (Sr). The backfield should be in good shape with Dustin Belskey's return, he played Fullback last season but should see more carries in 2012, expect Wyatt Jackson to see some time as well. Christian Leech and Jerqual Wilson formed a solid receiving corps, but Jordan Spangler should be ready to take the lead role. The Defense for the Crushers should be an improvement with health. Tyler Rugg, Nathan James, and Gap Barbin are names to watch on that side of the ball.  McCort has hit a tough two year run after winning the conference for four straight seasons. They have the talent to contend this year, and will play a big factor in the "A" race in District 6.

3. Johnstown (9-2)
KEY Players-Dalvin Williams (LB) Nick Subich (OL) Tyler Taylor (RB)
There is no team other team in the league that has to replace the talent that the Trojans had. Johnstown's impressive regular season run will be coming to an end, but they still will put together a very competitive team, that could surprise some people. The first step is replacing all everything Quarterback, Gervon Simon.  Easier said than done. Brody Loboi seems to be the next in line, and perhaps Phillip Madison will get a chance.  The spread offense for the Trojans is all about the pass, and they must replace their top four receivers, although the running game should improve.  Tyler Taylor and Dalvin Williams are good athletes that will be key play makers for Johnstown.  The Trojans offense should have at least one strength, the line. Nick Subich will anchor the line at center, and Michael Brooks will return at tackle. The defense loses stalwart, Alkwan Williams. Dalvin Williams will likely be that go to guy for Johnstown on defense. He made some big plays last year, and should be asked to do plenty more this season.  Johnstown has some pieces albeit some unproven ones. The athletes and size never seems to be a problem at Johnstown, they just need to get everything in order. The success may take a few weeks, but if they get rolling they can beat anyone.

4. Somerset (3-7)
KEY Players-Tanner Stull (QB) Matt Boyer (RB) Jordan Willkow (WR)
The Somerset Golden Eagles rebounded well in 2011 from a win-less 2010 campaign. The season also brings a sense of belief for this year. Somerset only finished 3-7 but hung in tightly with teams like Richland and Penn Cambria proving they could play with the conference's elite. The 2012 hopes rest a lot on the shoulders of Junior signal caller, Tanner Stull. Stull was thrust into the starting lineup early and opened some eyes. He is a quick kid that can make plays with his feet. He will be among the better quarterbacks in the league and will win some games for Somerset. Another Junior, Matt Boyer will be a factor in the offense. He rushed for eight touchdowns last year and his bruising style of running should result in more scores this season. These two players bring much of the promise for the 2012 season, but there are obviously concerns.  The team lost 21 seniors and much of them occupied the defense and the trenches.  The Line and Defense will have plenty of new faces and how they respond will say a lot about Somerset's season.

5. Westmont (2-8)
KEY Players-Liam Moran (QB) Luke Blackburn (WB) Donny Shovestull (OL)
The 2011 Westmont Hilltoppers had a bid of a dissapointing campaign. They were led by a good group of seniors, yet couldn't secure many wins. The 2012 Hilltoppers will look to turn things around, and it all starts with the new Coach. Coach Glennon will move on, and leaves Westmont with a void. Despite not having a coach, there is talent for the new head man to build on.  Liam Moran will assume the role of Quarterback this season, and his athletic style will bring a new element to Westmont's offense. Sam Curry and Luke Blackburn will be manning the backfield positions and should be seeing the bulk of the carries.  Don Shovestall and Lucas Dragovich should provide size and stability up front.  Westmont's biggest issues over the years have been the numbers game.  They never seem to get a big football turnout, thus leaving little depth.  Westmont needs someone to stir up excitement and passion for the program, it could be a sleeping giant for the right coach.

6. Bedford (6-5)
KEY Players-Aaron Henry (RB) Luke Campbell (WR)  Tyler Black (TE)
2012 Bedford will see plenty of new faces and it is hard to predict how things will develop. Bedford loses all everything Marcus Shippey, all five offensive linemen, and playmaker Dakota Hess. Kody Blevins will get a look at QB, but Aaron Henry may have to take the role.  Henry was a good all purpose threat last season and has the athleticism to make the move.  Luke Campbell came on strong at Wide Receiver last season and is definitely one of the top offensive threats in the league. He needs to see the ball, so it is imperative for Bedford to find a Quarterback.  It really comes down to, Will Bedford's line be able to compete.  Bedford will have some athletes on offense and in the back lines of defense, but the lines are really shaky. There does not appear to be a lot of size coming up through the system, and as we all know games are won up front. Bedford could surprise some, but there is a lot of unknown.

Section I
1. Forest Hills (8-3)
KEY Players- Jared Shope (WR) Shawn Dell (RB) Tyler Shima (S)
Forest Hills has a disappointing end to their 2011 campaign. They will look to rebound after losing some key pieces from last season. Jared Shope will be the star of the show and could compete for Quarterback duties, but may be better serves at Wide Receiver. He will be a factor on defense and special teams also. Tyler Shima will be a factor at Quarterback.  Shawn Dell will return to be the primary Running Back. Shareef Blough, a sophomore, could also be a factor on offense at running back.  The offensive and defensive lines are depleted after last year, but they also seem to retool.  Hayden Fyock returns with starting experience there.  The Rangers have a special player in Shope, and some unproven kids as well. Coach Bailey rarely has down seasons, and it is because of the hard working kids and the good coaching staff. Forest Hills will play a factor for the District Championship race, as always.

2. Penn Cambria (9-3)
KEY Players-Mac Behe (LB) Devin Lawhead (RB) James Mardula (WR)
There is plenty of optimism and confidence in Cresson this season. Penn Cambria has a really strong senior class on their hands, and Coach Ernie Fetzer and the Panthers can make a run to Mansion Park. The Running Game loses Jordan Fuller, but Mac Behe and Devin Lawhead should be able to hold things down just fine. Nathan Keagy and James Mardula are two good athletes at receiver and will play big factors. Quarterback is not a sure thing right now, but Branden Eckenrode will get a look.  The defense of Penn Cambria will definitely be one of the league's best. All State Linebacker Mac Behe will be the anchor. Lawhead and Mardula are also big tackles for PC. They made the semi-finals last year before falling to eventual state runner-up Tyrone, but Penn Cambria's season featured a playoff win over Forest Hills. That game with Forest Hills this season could be one of the best of the year, if not the best.  Penn Cambria is a legitimate conference and district threat.

3. Cambria Heights (5-5)
KEY Players-Tyler Crawford (FB) Ben Myers (WR) Andrew Brawley (WR)
This is certainly uncharted waters for Cambria Heights. They regularly do not have high expectations, but after a .500 campaign in 2011 and many key players back, this could be Cambria Heights season for perhaps a playoff berth.  The offense returns nine starters from last season, including all the skilled position players. The offense will feature a heavy dosage of Tyler Crawford's running.  Donnie Contorchick will also see carries. Ben Myers is a versatile player that will see the ball in a variety of ways.  Andrew Brawley is a quick receiver that will be reliable for Quarterback, Nathan Bearer.  The offense will be able to score enough points to keep them in games, but the defense must improve. Contorchick and Crawford are the anchors on that side of the ball. Coach Jarrod Lewis may have been just what the Doctor ordered for this program, they are definitely on the rise. Cambria Heights could challenge for a playoff berth, it is not that far fetched.

4. Bishop Guilfoyle (1-8)
KEY Players-Pat Irwin (QB) Cody Rossman (RB) Nate Nardelli (WR)
Bishop Guilfoyle suffered some growing pains in 2011, but the rebuilding year may be worth it.  The Marauders only lost six seniors from last season, and the team featured many freshmen. They will still be young, but much more experienced. Pat Irwin was often running around for his life last year, but the Senior will be the team leader and the primary source of offense.  Cody Rossman and Brendan Chadbourn should be able to make plays out of the backfield. Chadbourn will also be a factor as a receiver, along with Nate Nardelli.   They have play makers, but the defense and line will prevent them from being in the upper echelon of the league.  The team and program will get better and they may surprise this season. If they can sneak into the "A" playoffs, they will be a factor.

5. Central Cambria (2-8)
KEY Players-Stephen Papuga (RB) Steven Rickard (OL) Brandon Long (WR)
Tough times have fallen on the Central Cambria Football program. Sam Shutty has the tough task of restoring pride and a winning way to the program. Central Cambria was very senior heavy last year, and they lost nearly everyone. Stephen Papuga will have to be the primary offensive threat as a Running Back. Tyler Gironda is the only Quarterback listed for this year, so that duty will be up to him. Central Cambria will have a retooled line and defense. They will struggle with size this year, that is the sure thing. They do not appear to have the strong depth they usually possess. This could be a long year in Ebensburg.

6. Bishop Carroll (1-9)
KEY Players-Michael Leslie (OL) Dan Lesney (RB) Josh Mock (OL)
The state of Bishop Carroll Football does not look good. Craig Sponsky is out at Coach, enrollment is way down, and there is a principal that would like to de-emphasize athletics. Greg Snyder has no easy task at hand in his first head coaching stint.  The Huskies do possess some great size with Michael Leslie and Josh Mock among a few others. They do not have a definitive plan at Quarterback or Running Back, but have a number of options. Eric Smith,David Maruca, and Brody Shuty are all listed at Quarterback.  Dan Lesney is the leading returning rusher, so he will get the first crack. Familiar last names, Woo and Repko will also get some looks. The size of BC is their best asset. They really lack depth and experience. The unknown of Greg Snyder is another cause for concern.  The Huskies will have their work cut out for them, and it could be a long season on Husky Hill.

Chapman, Newest Panther.

Tra'von Chapman is Pitt's 11th commitment for Paul Chryst's 2013 recruiting class. Chapman is a four star Quarterback from Kent, Ohio. He has offers from the likes of Wisconsin,Cincinnati, and Minnesota among others. He is dual threat quarterback that throws extremely well, yet has 4.5 speed to keep defenses honest.  He joins Corey Clement and Scott Orndoff as Pitt's prized recruits for the 2013 class. Chapman also joins a Quarterback race for the future.  Chad Voytik was a four star prospect for 2012, Tom Savage has one year of eligibility in 2013 after transferring from Rutgers and Arizona, and he too was a four star. Also, 2014 Blackhawk High School Quarterback, Chandler Kincade has verbally committed to Pitt as well.  The Quarterback situation at Pitt has been bleak from the onset of the Wannstedt era, and now it is the strongest it has been in years.  Chapman and Voytik are similar players and both seem poised to lead Pitt on offense.  The race the next few seasons will definitely be worth watching.
Chapman's commitment also looms large in the pursuit of two highly regarded prospects.  Tyler Boyd of Clairton and Robert Foster of Central Valley are two marquee Pittsburgh based recruits Pitt is pursuing. They both play wide receiver, and the best way to attract a receiver is to have a quarterback to throw them the ball. Chapman has a high skill set and may be able to persuade at least one of the stud wide receivers. The commitment of Chapman could not have come at a better time.  The Paul Chryst critics were in full force after Pitt lost out on Dorian Johnson, a highly touted offensive line from Pittsburgh. Chapman should ease the worries for now, and could be a very good player for Pitt down the line.  Welcome Tra'von!

D6 Sports Network Twenty Greatest Teams of the 2000's. #3

3. 2000 Tyrone

The Scoop-The 2000 Tyrone Golden Eagles are the last link to a State Champion from District Six.  The 1999 Tyrone team is the only team to bring it home, and the 2000 team had plenty of holdovers from that memorable run to the Gold. Jesse Jones was the star of the 1999 team and he was back in 2000. He rushed for 2,232 yard in 2000. He actually rushed for 100 more yards in 1999, but appeared in two more games that season making his number even more impressive. The 1999 Quarterback, Brandon Hoover was also back and had another productive season.  The Tyrone defense this season was lights out.  They surrendered just 4 points a game in the regular season. The season started out in shocking fashion. A very good Bellwood-Antis team knocked off the defending champs 19-0 to start the season. Tyrone did not panic as they ran off 8 games to end the regular season.  They dispatched Bishop McCort in the opening round behind a 300 yard game by Jesse Jones and beat a very good Westmont team on the road in the second round.  The rematch was set as they got Bellwood-Antis on the carpet of Mansion Park.  Tyrone would not be denied as they got their revenge 28-3.  Tyrone lost to Sharon in the State tournament 21-14 in overtime to a Sharon team that had seven Division One Players.  The Back to Back was not meant to be, but 2000 Tyrone kept things rolling for the powerhouse into the new millennium.

The Stars-Jesse Jones is obviously a big part of Tyrone's football history. He earned all state honors two seasons, and is currently 12th all time in the state in rushing with 6,911 yards. Scott Gummo was an all state pick for two seasons and was a huge anchor on the line for the Golden Eagles. Doug Roseberry was a big time Linebacker and eventually played for the Pitt Panthers. The 2000 Tyrone Golden Eagles had five all state players, but I am having trouble finding everyone's name. (Please share any information you have)

The Argument-The 2000 Tyrone Golden Eagles were just another powerhouse team under Coach John Franco.  The Junior class that was instrumental in winning the championship in 1999, also put on a memorable senior season. Despite the early season hiccup to Bellwood, the Golden Eagles put on a dominating season.  They did beat the 2000 Bishop McCort team that turned into the 7th ranked 2001 Bishop McCort team. They also beat the best Westmont team of the modern era.  The rematch win over Bellwood in the District Six Championship was a memorable one. Although this team did not duplicate the state playoff success, they had what it took to win a state championship, as they proved the year before.  This Tyrone team has to be in almost everyone's top 5 when it comes to the 2000's, they were that good.

15 Prospects I have an Eye on....Maybe You Should too.

The Pirates are enjoying a nice stretch at the Major League level, but it is never too early to look at the future. Pittsburgh has stockpiled the minor league system the past few years, and that leaves you with some interesting and talented players to look forward to. I am not claiming to be some major Minor League Baseball talent buff, but some guys numbers stick out more than most.  Obviously there are some prospects I missed. They are still very good and worthy of checking out. They have drafted plenty of High School Pitchers they drafted the past few seasons, and it is hard to evaluate until they really make the climb. I did not forget about Colton Cain, Colton Brewer, and so on and so forth.

1. Gerrit Cole SP 21 AA-Altoona- Gerrit Cole has recently climbed the latter to AA after a sound performance in High-A Bradenton. The former number 1 overall pick's first start was not anything outstanding, but solid.  He is 6-1 with a 2.63 ERA and 75 strikeouts in his 14 starts this season. Gerrit Cole is definitely the prize of the Pirates minor league system. He is on the fast track to the Majors. Gerrit should see AAA next season, and could be in Pittsburgh by mid-season if all things continue to work out. Setbacks do happen, but Cole can be a front end starter for years to come if he stays healthy. He has that kind of talent.

2. Mark Appel SP 20 Unsigned- Mark Appel is not technically a Pirate farm hand, yet.  I think Appel will ultimately sign with Pittsburgh before the deadline.  He has very little to gain by coming back, and the risk is way more than the reward.  Appel has front end talent and could make a similar jump through the minors as Cole has had. I would not rank Appel with Cole and Taillon in talent, but he is not far off. Appel could possibly be in Pittsburgh in 2014 if all works out. Appel is a major part of Pittsburgh's future, it would be pretty bad if he fails to sign.

3. Jameson Taillon SP 20 High A-Bradenton- Jameson Taillon was believed to be Pittsburgh's top prospect going into the season, but has since been jumped by Gerrit Cole.   Taillon has dropped the whole way to number two, so yeah he is still really important.  Taillon has not hit a roadblock in High A, but he isn't breezing through it. Taillon is 4-6  with a 4.10 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 74 innings.  He has had outstanding games, and some real shaky ones this season. Taillon will be in Altoona next year, maybe even the tail end of this year. He did not attend college and would only be wrapping up his Sophomore year if he had. There is no need for concern, he can possibly be in Pittsburgh by 2014, 2015 at the latest.

4. Luis Heredia SP 17 Shortseason A-State College- Luis Heredia may be the most intriguing prospect Pittsburgh has.  Heredia is a 6-6 right handed pitcher that throws mid 90's. He is 17 years old and is the age of a High School senior.  The kid pitched for the first time this season and only gave up 1 hit through 4 innings.  The scary thing with Heredia he may spend another five season in Minor League Baseball and would only be 22. There is no telling if a kid like this will pan out, but its nice to think he would. The Pirates threw the kid a nice bonus, and he may be as good as advertised.  International pitchers are hit or miss, but imagine if he was a hit like Felix Hernandez....

5. Starling Marte CF 23 AAA Indianpolis- Starling Marte is the one position player that could be knocking on the door very soon. Actually, it seemed as though he may be here by now during Spring Training. Marte has not dominated AAA, and has struggled mightily at times this season. He still very well could be in Pittsburgh this season. Jose Tabata is just awful this season, and other options at Right Field have been inconsistent. The trade deadline will determine Marte's fate.  He will be here next year no matter what, and has a world of potential. He has 16 stolen bases, 36 RBI's and 27 extra base hits in 70 games for the Indianapolis Indians.

6. Josh Bell RF 19 Low A West Virginia- Josh Bell has been hurt since April 24 and has not played since. He should be playing again soon and hopefully progress is made by the end of the season. Bell was a first round talent that the Pirates over-slotted for last year, and it appears now that it was worth it.  Bell is definitely the most talented and interesting corner outfielder in the organization and could be a Jason Heyward type player down the line. It is hard to say when the kid will make his way to Pittsburgh, but it would be a great sign if he started in High-A next season and not have a repeat start in West Virginia.

7. Rudy Owens SP 24 AAA Indianapolis- Rudy Owens will be the first in line to receive a promotion to Pittsburgh for whatever the reason. I would say there is not much more Owens has to prove in the minors. He has proven himself at every level, and is having a fantastic AAA season. Owens is 6-2 with a 2.38 ERA in 14 starts. Owens is a left hander and would be a nice addition to the Pittsburgh rotation.  Kevin Correia,Brad Lincoln, and Jeff Karstens are occupying the final two spots in the rotation currently, but moves should be made very soon. Owens will get to pitch in Pittsburgh this year, it is only a matter of when.

8. Tony Sanchez C 24 AAA Indianapolis-Sanchez remains Pittsburgh's only real "prospect" when it comes to Catcher.  Sanchez is close to being labeled as a bust (if you haven't already called him one) as he has not lived up to being the 4th overall pick in the 2009 draft. Sanchez has recently been promoted to AAA, and he has not exactly hit too well.  He was not hitting well in Altoona either.  Sanchez was either flat out overrated or has not lived up to his potential. Still, with the current catching situation in the organization the front office has to be praying Sanchez works out.  Barajas is old and does not have much left, and McKenry is not a starter. The Pirates may have to go out and get somebody, or Sanchez steps up and does what he is supposed to.  He will stay in AAA this year, and will get a chance to make the majors next year.

9. Brock Holt 2B/SS 24 AA Altoona-Brock Holt is emerging as a potential prospect in a very thin middle infield in the Pirates organization.  Jordy Mercer and Chase d'Arnaud do not appear to be major league players and they both sit in AAA, but Holt could be different.  Holt is batting .315 to date and could see a promotion to AAA soon.  Shortstop is Pittsburgh's worst organizational position, and they are begging for one guy in the minors to step up.  Holt could be that guy, I'd like to see how he handles AAA.

10. Wyatt Mathisen C 18 Rookie GCL-Mathisen was Pittsburgh's 3rd pick in the draft and he comes in highly touted. The Pirates were able to sway him from going to the University of Texas and sign. He becomes Pittsburgh's next hope to be the Catcher. He is far from the majors, but should be a guy to keep an eye on. He is absolutely tearing the cover off the ball in the Rookie league for what it is worth.  Maybe he can be in West Virginia next year as a 19 year old, that would be really worth keeping an eye on.

11. Mel Rojas OF 22 High A Bradenton-Rojas certainly looks the part of a Major League Outfielder. His 6-3 frame projects him nicely and he could be a serious pro prospect as his minor league career progresses. He is hitting just .271 in Bradenton, but that is improvement from his previous minor league seasons. If Rojas can put together a full season, he will be a highly intriguing player in AA next season.

12. Alen Hanson 2B 19 Low A West Virginia-Hanson is having the best season of any Pirate minor league farmhand. Out of nowhere the little second basemen is hitting .323 with 10 Home Runs, 37 RBI's, and 18 stolen bases. He is a young guy so there is no real rush to get him to Bradenton.  His season is a real bright spot because of the aforementioned middle infield struggles this organization possesses.  Hansen's season may be a fluke, but he is firmly on the radar now, and has earned prospect status.

13. Alex Dickerson 1B/OF 22 High A Bradenton-Dickerson may be the Pirates' best future power hitter in the system.  Dickerson is a polished former college hitter that has driven in 43 runs on the season from the left side of the plate.  His 6-3 235 frame makes him look like a very solid First Base prospect.  Pittsburgh is heavy on pitching, but the real significant batting prospects are few and far between. Dickerson is a guy I have been following closely and hopefully turns out to be better than a Matt Hague or a Steve Pearce.

14.  Barrett Barnes CF 20 Shortseason State College-Barnes was the Pirates supplemental pick and is signed and ready to go in State College. He seems to have a bit of a project label to his name as he needs some work with his swing. That is an odd commodity to have from a college player.  He is still nonetheless loaded with talent.  Barnes joins a crowded system of outfielders, but he may be able to stick out. He is young in his career, but worth tracking for the next few years.

15. Matt Curry 1B 23 AA Altoona-I know, nothing exciting. Curry comes from a college program and is an undersized First Basemen. He may be Steve Pearce all over again, but I still find myself checking his stats when I do my minor league run through. He should be in AAA next year, if not this year. He is batting .291, and could get hot from time to time. I think this is total wishful thinking, but the Pirates need to take any First Base prospect they have somewhat seriously.

Titus Howard, Welcome Aboard!

Pitt secured its 8th commitment for the 2013 Football recruiting class as Clairton Defensive Back, Titus Howard pledged to the Panthers Sunday afternoon.  He is the second defensive commitment for Coach Paul Chryst, and the forth WPIAL player in the class. Howard holds offers from Connecticut,Arkansas State, and Toledo.  His offers should not be too concerning as his 6-2 frame and athletic ability warrant his Pitt offer.  He is rated as a 3 star prospect by Scout and 2 star by Rivals.
Howard comes from the Class A powerhouse Clairton High School.  Trenton Coles and Kevin Weatherspoon are former Clairton Bears themselves, as Pitt is starting a nice pipeline.  Clairton looks poised to make another State Championship run, and Howard will likely be a driving force. Howard could also be the key for Pitt landing Clairton star player, Tyler Boyd. Boyd is one of Pitt's primary targets for the class of 2013 and could be the key to Paul Chryst opening up a big WPIAL pipeline.  Pitt's recruiting is picking up nicely as of late. They may not be landing four and five star prospects, but they are adding quality players that can make an impact. Pitt still is very much in the race for guys like Robert Foster,Dorian Johnson, and Tyler Boyd.  The 2013 recruiting class can be a very good one.

**Update** Dorian Johnson has just picked Penn State, obviously not ideal for Paul Chryst, but not the end of the world.

D6 Sports Network Twenty Greatest Teams of the 2000's. #4

4. 2006 Bishop McCort

The Scoop-The 2006 Bishop McCort Crimson Crushers might not be a team you were expecting to see, but the were really good. That may even be an understatement.  The Crimson Crushers had size, speed, and talent across the board.  The offense had a balanced pro style set, and it started with the running game. Scott Lewis led the team with 1,365 yards with 11 scores.  Brad Barbin led the team with rushing touchdowns at 19. and also rushed for 903 yards.  The running game was good, but the passing game could be equally effective at times.  Jordan DeFrances threw for 1,560 yards and 11 touchdowns himself. Chris Seidel's speed provided a concern for opposing defenses.  Brad Barbin also had 404 receiving yards on top of his rushing prowess.  The 2006 Crushers started the season with two memorable games as they fell victims to Bedford 25-24 in the season opener. McCort reeled off 11 straight from there. They went into Sidman and stole one from a tough Forest Hills team 18-16. Over McCort's seven remaining regular season games they allowed 20 total points. The Defense was lights out.  McCort avenged their loss to Bedford in the playoffs with a 20 point win. In a packed house against Tyrone for the District Six Championship, McCort stood tall and won 37-28.  The Crushers seemed poised for a deep run, but it was halted by Wilmington 13-6 in below freezing conditions at Slippery Rock.

The Stars-The 2006 Bishop McCort team was loaded at just about everywhere. It was truly hard to pick a weakness.  Wayne Jones who anchored the defensive line earned All State honors, and he went on to earn a scholarship at Pitt. Mike Cruz was another force on that line and played and started at Pitt for a season.  Chris Kawchak was a second team all state selection at Defensive End and earned a spot at Shippensburg.  Scott Lewis went on to a four year career at Saint Francis and is near the top of the FCS in tackles all time.  Brad Barbin played at Carnegie Mellon.  Anthony Caperelli and Eric Lowry both starters on defense took their careers to Robert Morris. Wide Receiver/Safety, Chris Seidel went on to play at John Carroll.

The Argument-2006 Bishop McCort would be a tough out for anyone on this list. They had talent across the board. The defense is definitely one of the best on the list. The Defensive Line was absolutely massive with two Pitt recruits and Kawchak and unsung hero Jon Paros. Scott Lewis and Anthony Caperelli locked down the Linebacker level and Lowry and Seidel played great Secondary. The offense was efficient and had balanced.  The Wilmington game was a tough way to end the season, yet the season as a whole speaks for itself. They won 11 straight and lost two games by a total of eight points. The Crushers earn this spot because they certainly pass the eye test. The definitely put together a great season. They fell short to a really good team as well. A game with Jeannette and Terrelle Pryor in the State Semi-Finals would have been fun to see, but it was not meant to be.  There are still three greater teams ahead.  Stay Tuned.

D6 Sports Network Twenty Greatest Teams of the 2000's. #5

5. 2002 Forest Hills

The Scoop-The 2002 Forest Hills team may have the greatest of them all in terms of the 2000's for Coach Don Bailey.  The Rangers boasted a 13-1 record with an LHAC Championship and a District 6 Championship.  The 2001 Rangers had a good season that laid the groundwork for 2002. Forest Hills rolled through the Laurel Highlands with a 9-1 record.  They went on to breeze through the District Six Playoffs and dispelled the defending champions, Bishop McCort, in a 40-10 dominating win at Mansion Park. The Rangers had that trademark offensive line that could blow people off the line, and it opened the way for a successful offensive campaign. Cody Gallagher led the backfield for the Sidman squad and had a great season with 1,34 yards and 24 touchdowns. Sophomore Quarterback Bryan Kudalweic put on a season to remember. These Rangers had a balanced offense led by a dynamic sophomore Quarterback that went to a great career. The Defense was also the story as they allowed 46 points throughout the regular season.  Forest Hills traveled to Dubois to take on Brockway in inter-districts and won with ease 49-14.  This set a date with Seton LaSalle in the Western Final. The Rangers were no match for the Anthony Doria led offense of the Rebels and succumbed to them 42-18.

The Stars-You will have to excuse me because stats and college destinations for these guys are not easy to find.  But here is what I did find... Bryan Kudalweic had a fantastic Sophomore season and went on to Duquesne to play ball down the road.  Cody Gallagher was the workhorse and finished 10th in the state in Touchdowns in 2002.  Eric Trout caught 30 passes for 578 yards in 2002.  Mike Mayes and Gabe Wingard were among the best tackles in the state.

The Argument- The thing with ranking this list is simple. The entire body of work has to be considered, and this team had just that.  The Rangers had a stifling defense that resulted in them only surrendering 5 points a game in the regular season. The Rangers finished 9-0 and certainly had a long postseason run ahead. The Rangers absolutely smoked the 2002 McCort team in the Championship. McCort was 10-1 and a huge game was expected, but Forest Hills stole the show. Forest Hills had a complete offense to go with the masterful defense. The 2002 Seton LaSalle team was great, and it would have been tough for any team on this list to beat. This team passes the eye test, and the success test. This is definitely one of Don Bailey's better runs at Forest Hills.

D6 Sports Network Twenty Greatest Teams of the 2000's. #6

6. 2001 Bishop Carroll

The Scoop-The 2001 Bishop Carroll Huskies had another solid season under Coach Craig Sponsky.  The used the spread rushing attack and used it well. The Huskies shared the LHAC Championship with Forest Hills. They avenged the previous season's District Championship by smacking Windber 35-14 at Mansion Park. Bishop Carroll also defeated #7 on this list during the season.  This team could run the Football, and that was the name of their game.  Chad Schilling led the area in rushing and scoring for his senior year with 2,134 yards and 35 Touchdowns.  He was the key to the Husky offense.  Now if that wasn't enough, Nate Crookshank was just as dangerous.  He is a true dual threat and one of the best on this list.  He rushed for 834 yards and 13 touchdowns this season. He also passed for 966 yards.  The Huskies had a lethal defense as well.  This was a great team that went 12-2 after falling to WPIAL power Rochester in the State Semifinals.

The Stars-Chad Schilling's season led him to first team all state honors.  Nate Crookshank went on to play at Slippery Rock in Division II.  He started for four seasons and holds some passing records for Slippery Rock still standing today. Anthony Piccioni went on to play Football for the Naval Accademy.  Tyler Laverick was a first team all state selection while leading the area in tackles.

The Argument-This BC team set the tone for years to come. They had the deadly rushing attack that is rivaled by few on this list.  Schilling was a great high school running back and he put on a fantastic season.  Crookshank's versatility made him one of the better players in the 2001 season.  They won a share of the LHAC, they won Districts, and they lost to a very good Rochester team. This team can hang around with any team on this list, there is no doubt about it.

D6 Sports Network Twenty Greatest Teams of the 2000's. #7

7. 2001 Bishop McCort

The Scoop-The 2001 Bishop McCort team finally broke through an achieved post season success. The Crushers made their way to the Western Final an went 11-3 along the way. The Crushers played in some memorable games, and played very under pressure.  The offense for the Crushers started with their senior Quarterback, Joe Arcurio. Arcurio had the size and moxie to lead a Championship squad.  He lead the area in passing his Senior season. He had weapons all over the field, Pat Schrey and Ryan Regula provided great targets.  Ray Forgas and Mike Gehlmann led a host of talented backs that shared the duty.   The Crimson Crusher's line that year was massive led by the Delich twins and Anthony Rizzo.  The Defense headed by Rizzo and two Junior Linebackers, Oreskovitch and Hockyco was also stout. The Crushers posted a 7-2 regular season campaign.  The Huskies defeated McCort, and McCort went on to lose in perhaps the biggest upset in D6 History to Central-Martinsburg.  That loss changed the tide as the Crushers won five straight. They defeated Bellwood-Antis 21-14 in the District Six Championship. The Crushers won another tight game over Sharon in the state quarter-finals.  The Crushers dropped a 42-21 contest to Washington in the Western Final.

The Stars-Joe Arcurio went on to attend Slippery Rock for Football, but later came to UPJ for baseball.  Matt Domonkos was the lone representative for McCort on the All State teams as a Kicker and earned a scholarship at Wisconsin. Andrew Hawkins was just a Sophomore, but he went on to play at Toledo, and now is with the Cincinnati Bengals.  Ryan Regula went on to walk-on at Pitt. This team had size and they were a complete and balanced team across the board.

The Argument-I will not lie, it is getting really tough as we enter the best of the best. 2001 Bishop McCort is a team revered very highly in Bishop McCort circles. They are arguably the best McCort team of the modern era. They had it all as a team. They had a balanced offense, and stingy defense, and great special teams. They did lose to a Central team that was very bad, and lost to Bishop Carroll as well.  Washington was a very good team that year and basically forced a running clock on almost everyone they played.   McCort stuck around with those guys.  This was a real tough call. I could see this team anywhere in the next two or three spots.  Let the Debate begin.

OK, He Can Recruit.

Paul Chryst received a major commitment this weekend as Corey Clement of Glassboro, New Jersey made the call to come to Pitt.  Clement has excellent vision and is a very creative runner.  He runs very similar to LeSean McCoy, as he is not afraid to reverse field and juke out ten defenders in the process. Clement chose Pitt over some very serious programs, so this is a great addition for the Panthers. Clement had offers from Penn State, Ohio State, Notre Dame, West Virginia, Nebraska, Florida State, and Wisconsin.  Some of those offers are from all of Pitt's chief recruiting rivals, so it is a big win for the Panthers coaching staff. He has a 3 star rating from Rivals, but 4 star ratings from Scout and ESPN.  Recruiting rankings are a shot in the dark, but the offer list speaks volumes of the kind of player he is.  Paul Chryst has a stable of young running backs at his disposal already, convincing Clement he will get carries obviously took some work.  Rushel Shell is Pitt's most prized recruit in years, and Isaac Bennett is turning out to be a diamond in the rough left by Todd Graham. Paul Chryst has be known to keep multiple backs happy and productive, so there is no doubt in my mind he can continue that here at Pitt.
Paul Chryst was receiving some criticism from the caliber of the recruits he had received before Clement. This should silence the masses for now.  Ohio State and Penn State have been getting plenty of good and talented recruits, so that obviously is why there was anxiety from the Pitt fanbase.  The Panther faithful have had some rough years, understandable they are impatient.  Chryst is a laid back guy, and his approach is the complete opposite of Graham.  Time will tell if it works, but Pitt has two very solid recruits (Scott Orndoff) on board already.  Chryst is on the cusp of landing Tra'von Chapman, a four star Quarterback from Ohio.  Pitt has leans from major WPIAL prospects, Dorian Johnson and Robert Foster.  This class can be very good, and it can silence the critics of Paul Chryst's recruiting ability.

Blogging on the Road?

I will make my first adventure to see the Pirates outside of Pittsburgh for the first time of my life this weekend.  I will be heading with a buddy to the "mistake on the lake", otherwise known as Cleveland.  I have been to a few Ballparks in my day, AT&T Park in San Francisco is great.  Comerica Park in Detroit is nice, nothing grand.  I have seen PNC Park about a million and  a half times, and it is still the best.  Progressive Field (It is still the Jake to me) has been on my hit list for sure, and I'll take seeing a Pirate game on the road to do it.  Always fun getting out checking in on some new places.  I'll be tweeting like an annoying bird that wakes you up during a nap all Saturday long, so tune in to that. I plan on making it out of there that night and to the safety of Mario's on Carson Street, because two Pittsburgh fans drinking Great Lakes all afternoon should not stay in Cleveland for the night. Follow up blog, and plenty of pictures will hopefully be in the plan for my return. Lets Go Bucs!!

D6 Sports Network Twenty Greatest Teams of the 2000's. #8

8. 2004 Johnstown

The Scoop-The 2004 Johnstown Trojans had a wealth of talent and put together a fine season in the Laurel Highlands. Perhaps the best player on this list carried this team to a District Six AAA Championship. LaRod Stephens-Howling was the franchise player for the Trojans for three seasons and is the best player from District Six of the modern era, no questions asked.  His senior season was just another chapter of his storybook career at Johnstown. He rushed for 1,875 yards and 32 Touchdowns as a part of his 4,597 yard 57 Touchdown career.  The Trojans owe a lot of success to Stephens-Howling, but the team overall was pretty good.  Scott Corson and Mike Kush led a big line that paved the way for LaRod. The season started out dtrong for the Trojans as they posted a season high 61 points against Cambria Heights. Westmont upset the Trojans in Week 3. Johnstown also fell to Bishop McCort 17-14 in Week 7 in a road game at Trojan Stadium.  Johnstown went on a roll from there and captured the District Title over Bellefonte.  The Trojans' season ended to a very good Selinsgrove team in the State Playoffs.

The Stars-LaRod Stephens-Howling was obviously the star of the show. He went on to start as a Freshmen and Sophomore at Pitt and continued to be one of Pitt's most valuable offensive players for the duration of his career. LaRod was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals and is a valuable player on offense and returns. Scott Corson went on to earn a scholarship at Pitt also.  Antwaun Reed was just a Freshmen, but went on to Pitt and started for two season, and is currently working on making the Cleveland Browns.  Josh Miller was a key member of the team and went to IUP.

The Argument-2004 Johnstown did not dominate the LHAC, but they had a very good season.  They lost a highlt contested battle with Bishop McCort in one of the more memorable games in that rivalry. LaRod Stephens-Howling's ability helps carry this team a lot. He is the best player I have ever seen from the area in my lifetime, and you could obviously tell he was a stud right away.  The team had plenty of athletes across the field. They lost three games by a total of 20 points, so they were right in every game.  I do feel this was the best Johnstown team of the 2000's and they earn the respect of making the Top 10.

D6 Sports Network Twenty Greatest Teams of the 2000's. #9

9. 2005 Bishop Carroll

The Scoop-The 2005 Bishop Carroll Huskies rolled through the local football area without much of a problem. The 12-1 Huskies were led by a running game fronted by Paul Forcellini. Forcellini did just about everything from leading the team in rushing to leading the team in interceptions and being a "force" on kickoff returns.  They were not a one trick pony, though.  Brock Laurer was a true dual threat as a quarterback.  He threw 13 touchdowns and ran for another 12.  He nearly rushed for 1,000 yards, giving defenses fits on what player to key on.  The Huskies passing attack was led by big 6-7 Tight End Jeff Minemyer. He created match up problems with his size. The defense was stout too, as they surrendered just 12 points a game on the seasons.  The Huskies rolled up a 3-0 record before a showdown with McCort. Forcellini returned a kick, and it took overtime to win the classic game 14-13.  The Huskies rolled through the rest of the season and first round before a showdown with Blairsville and the passing game of Adam Highberger.  The Huskies survived and defeated Bellwood-Antis for the championship the following week.  Bishop Carroll bowed out to Steelton Highspire ending their season at 12-1.

The Stars-Paul Forcellini was a part of two all state football teams in his career and was the driving force for the Huskies.  He never garnered FBS offers, but ended up playing at Bucknell University. Jeff Minemyer went on to play Division One at Rutgers.  He had a career ending injury while in Piscataway. Jarrett Polites was also named to second team all state in 2005.  Nate Gerber was just a sophomore, but ended up playing going to The Citadel for college football.

The Argument-The 2005 Bishop Carroll Huskies were just another great team under coach Craig Sponsky.  They played in typical BC fashion. They had the star running back, dual threat QB, and the powerful line.  This team dominated the LHAC and went 12-0 in local play.  Forcellini is one of the better players I have ever seen in person.  This team was a complete team and definitely passed the eye test.  They may not be the best Bishop Carroll team, but they were really good. They earn their spot at number 9 for going 9-0 in a very good 2005 LHAC.

D6 Sports Network Twenty Greatest Teams of the 2000's. #10

10. 2011 Tyrone

The Scoop-There may not be a better program in all of District Six than the Tyrone Golden Eagles. They have had some great talent and some great teams. The Franco reign at Tyrone may not be matched by a coach in District Six for some time. The 2011 edition of Tyrone played out like plenty of other seasons.  They had a dominating season, a D6 crown, and success against the WPIAL.  Tyrone opened with arch rival Bellwood-Antis and they held on for a 17-6. The following week was a surprising loss to AAAA Mifflin County. After the head scratching loss, the team reeled off 13 straight wins and made a State Championship appearance.  Along the way the Tyrone offense rolled under the direction of Steve Franco. The Senior Quarterback lit up the Friday Night sky for 2600 yards and 30 Touchdowns.  This included a 200 yard 3 score game against Richland in the District Six Championship, a 46-21 win. Franco had a great supporting cast on the powerful offense. His main target was Nick Patton. He caught 15 touchdowns and went for 1,200 yards.  The unsung hero of the offense may have been Christian Getz.  The senior back steadied the offense, and made huge contributions. Tyrone went on to states and defeated Hickory in the first round, survived a classic against WPIAL power Aliquippa to set up a State Championship showdown with Lancaster Catholic.  The game was 10-7 late, but Lancaster Catholic tacked on a touchdown late to set the score 17-7 final.  It capped a memorable run by the Golden Eagles.

The Stars-Steve Franco went on to be named as an All State Quarterback, and on top of that the AA State Player of the year. Steve's magical season has him going to play Division One Quarterback for Akron.  His Old Man won Coach of the Year, a rarity for the state runner up to sweep both awards.   Nick Patton will be pursuing a Track career at either Penn State or Pitt.  Chritian Getz will be going on to play football, I personally can not track down where.  Charles Adams was a junior this past season  and will be a key role for the 2012 campaign.

The Argument-The 2011 Tyrone squad and the 2009 McCort teams have been the two best recent teams and it was hard picking one over the other.  I gave the nod to Tyrone for having a tougher road to States. The Golden Eagles have always fared well against the WPIAL and took down heavily favored Aliquippa in a classic Western Final.  The team's offense was awesome and Steve Franco put on a fantastic campaign.  The way they ran through the Districts and the way they went through states made it seem like they were destined to win it all. Lancaster Catholic was a very good football team, and Tyrone stood right up to them. The Golden Eagles have a tradition unlike any other school in this district. They will be moving on without their Coach, but the pride of Tyrone Football will remain.

5 Reasons the 2012 Pirates are for real.

1. Pitching-The pitching for the Pittsburgh Pirates this season has been nothing short of phenomenal. The emergence of James McDonald has to start getting more National attention.  J-Mac has been down right nasty at times this season, and when he is rolling he is one of the best right handers in the National League. He is currently 5th in the ERA race, and can be one of the best strikeout pitchers in the league.  He is proving to be consistent and possesses "Ace" potential.  He may not be lights out all season, but is turning into a horse that Clint Hurdle can rely on.  AJ Burnett and Erik Bedard have done everything asked of them and more.  Burnett has really emerged as a leader and a guy that can be trusted, and Bedard is very consistent. The top three for the Pirates set up well for the rest of the season.  The Bullpen has been outstanding as well.  The three inning combination of Juan Cruz, Jason Grilli, and Joel Hanranhan has been tremendous and has shown no signs it will stop.  Tony Watson and Brad Lincoln have been nice surprises as well.  Obviously there is no way to predict how they will pitch for the remainder of the season.  There is also no way to say it will go foul either, they have been great so far and have carried the team.  The three top starters will be around all year long.  Kevin Correia, Jeff Karstens,Charlie Morton, and Brad Lincoln are all questionable starting pitchers this season. They have had good outings, but nothing to cement their roles.  The Pirates could always look to bring up a Rudy Owens if the time is right. I do not really see the Bucs being in the market for another starting pitcher when trades start happening.  They could look for a more reliable Lefty reliever if the price is right.

2. Efficient Offense?-Yes, I did put a question mark. How does the worst statistical offense in the league somehow have efficient in the same sentence? My theory is simple: How bad can it be if you are in first place? That is the reality of it all. The Pirates do great work with what they have.  The offense started out putrid, and never got that much better.  The past week or so they have been getting it done as well as they have all season. Rod Barajas and Clint Barmes are somewhat coming around. Alex Presley makes things happen one way or another. Neil Walker,Jose Tabata, and Pedro Alvarez are freakishly streaky.  The Pirates are currently enjoying a nice stretch for Neil Walker, maybe it will last. The Bucs have found ways to win without hitting the ball hard. They scratch and claw and the pitching keeps them around. Andrew McCutchen is the only true threat. Everyone else is streaky or just plan mediocre. They can definitely upgrade with an outfielder or first basemen. I bet the Pirates will make some sort of move before July to give the offense a boost.

3. Andrew McCutchen-I think it would be fair to say he is a legitimate MVP candidate at this point.  He is without a question more valuable to the Pirates than any other one player is to their respective team.  The Dodgers can win without Matt Kemp, and they have been doing it.  The Rangers can still smash the ball without Josh Hamilton.  The Pirates could not win without McCutchen. It is that simple. I still do not see why teams actually pitch to the guy. 1. He is THAT good. 2. Nobody else on the team can hit.  He leads the team in all major categories. He is on pace for a 30-30 season, and very well can attain that.  The Pirates success starts and ends with Cutch.  He tailed off a bit last year, but I do not see that happening this season.  He embraces being the face of the franchise, and handles it well.  McCutchen needs to be the guy all season, and I think he will be.

4. Hurdled-The guy will intentionally walk the winning run. He may leave his lefty reliever in to face a tough right handed batter.  He may have his best hitters bunt in questionable situations.  He also wins, and has this team in contention.  Say what you will about Hurdle's quirky style, but it works. It works with this team especially. The 2012 Pirates do not have that much talent. They have a very Pirate-like 30th ranked offense. They find themselves in first place regardless.  Hurdle manages with his gut and his instincts. He is not by the book by any measure. He makes some really strange calls at times, but I have witnessed at least five key wins this season they won by the calls he was making. These Pirates would be towards the bottom with John Russell and most other managers. Clint Hurdle has changed the culture, and made this team believe they can win. It is hard to describe, but Hurdle works well with these Pirates. He needs to keep taking risks and going with his gut. It is working, it needs to be left alone.

5. NL Central-The Cubs are terrible and should leave plenty of wins open for the Pirates. The Astros will fade soon, and could give some more wins up.  This leaves a four team race for first. They are the same four teams as least year, but not quite the same teams.  Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder are gone.  The Brewers have not been playing that well, and the Pirates went in to Milwaukee and took two of three. That was unheard of the past few seasons as the Brewers have owned the Pirates. The tides may have changed, and that is a big curse the Pirates need to get over.  The Bucs have also played well against Cincinnati this season. This division is one of the weaker ones in the league, if not the weakest.  The Cardinals are always a factor, and the Reds have the most talent. It will not be easy to unseat either of those, especially down the stretch.  The Pirates may have learned from last year and may be able to avoid the 10 game losing streak to ruin the whole season.  McCutchen and company can scrap and hang around.  It may only take 85-88 wins for the division, and that is something the Pirates can do.

D6 Sports Network Twenty Greatest Teams of the 2000's. #11

11. 2009 Bishop McCort

The Scoop-The 2009 Bishop McCort team almost put on  the perfect season. The Crushers capped off four straight District and LHAC Championships and finally broke through during the state playoffs.  The 2009 season saw records break and Bishop McCort's first appearance in the State Championship game. The Crushers were led by Josh Seidel. The senior Running Back put on a season for the ages as he rushed for 1,910 yards and 32 scores. He carried the team's potent rushing attack that also got major contributions from Chaz Merriman and Dane Domonkos.  Domonkos also had a giant season as he did just about everything from most of the kicking duty, quarterback, receiver, and return man. His 18 total touchdowns came from just about anywhere you could imagine. The Crushers rolled through the LHAC with relative ease. The District Six playoffs proved no match for the Crushers until Bellwood-Antis in the District Title game.  The Blue Devils gave the Crushers all they could handle. The Crushers crushed Millersburg in the first round and outlasted Tri Valley in a shootout in the Eastern Final. This set up a date with the Clairton Bears in Hershey.  The Crushers held their own against the Bears, but fell 15-3.

The Stars-The 2009 Crushers featured four first team all state picks, and another two on the second team. Josh Seidel was All State First Team Running Back and accepted a scholarship to IUP.  Dane Domonkos was named the first team all state Kicker, and is now playing Wide Receiver for Saint Francis. Shane Rugg was named a first team Defensive Linemen and took a scholarship to play Offensive Line at Lehigh.  Anthony Pioli posted an insane 17.5 sacks and also wound up on the first team, but he chose not to play college football. Steve Belskey and Chaz Merriman also got second team defensive honors but did not play college football. The 2009 team was very senior heavy, and has left Bishop McCort reeling since.

The Argument-The 2009 Bishop McCort team may have not been the best McCort team of the 2000's but at least have the State Championship appearance, something only they can claim. They had an experienced line and a potent backfield. The dominant rushing attack was also a curse as they never honed a passing game and that hurt themselves in the State Championship game. Still these guys went 14-1 and dominated the conference and district. A game with 13-1 Forest Hills that season never took place because the schedule cycle did not allow it, but that would have been quite the game.  This team has the record, running game, and success to leave their mark as one of the best teams of the 2000's and arguably could be placed higher.

D6 Sports Network Twenty Greatest Teams of the 2000's. #12

12. 2005 Forest Hills

The Scoop-The 2005 Forest Hills Rangers had it all.  They had size, they played great defense, and a dynamic offense. Travis Rearick's junior season was something else. He threw for 2,240 yards and 25 touchdowns. His play was key for the Rangers to run Don Bailey's pro style offense. The Rangers' running game was centered around Will Lazaration.  The Senior made some big runs and provided balance to the offense as he scored 14 touchdowns.  The offense's star may have been Adam Trout.  Trout was able to stretch the field and keep defenses on their toes all season long. Trout went for over 1,000 yards and 15 scores on the season. Jake Oswalt was a pretty solid number two threat as caught 39 passes himself.  The offense had the ability to beat you because of the trademark Forest Hills line did its job. The nasty Forest Hills defense was also present. They forced 25 turnovers and teamed up for 27 sacks. The Rangers went through the regular season with only one loss, as that came to Derrick Harris led Bedford.  The Rangers rolled through the D6 Playoffs and fended off a tough Bishop McCort team for the second time on the season for the District Six Championship.  The Rangers happened to be in the way of the 16-0 South Park State Champions in the first round of states.

The Stars-Travis Rearick was the star of the offense and went on to have a successful senior campaign in 2006.  He took a football career at Mercyhurst College. Rearick eventually gained the starter's role and had a great run for the Lakers.  Adam Trout's fantastic senior season landed him on the All State Second Team.  David Mehall anchored the lines. Josh Shope also played a key role on both sides of the ball. D6 Sport Network associate, Ross Carpenter led the team in interceptions.  Often the case with Forest Hills Football, they were not loaded with collegiate players. That does not mean much when it comes to winning High School Football games.  Forest Hills does just fine with the talent and skill they have.

The Argument-To fully appreciate this team, you must understand the LHAC they played in. The league at this time was much stronger than it has been in recent seasons. There was roughly six teams that were competitive and could win any given game.  Forest Hills proved to be the most consistent this season with an 11-2 record. They faced a lethal team in State against South Park.  That team was a machine, and anyone in the countdown would have had a whale of a time beating them.  2005 Forest Hills was a smash-mouth, no nonsense football team. They had the savvy quarterback and a group of players that understood their roles and excelled in them.  They fit in well in the 12 spot of this countdown. Don Bailey has had some great teams, and this is one of the more recent ones.  The debate could be on with this team, that is for sure.

D6 Sports Network Twenty Greatest Teams of the 2000's. #13

13. 2000 Windber

The Scoop-The 2000 Windber Ramblers is quite a throwback, but the ranking is warranted.  The Windber Ramblers had a dominating team that fell right in the middle of the Bishop Carroll dynasty. The Windber Football put on quite a dynasty of their own in the early 2000's.  The 2000 Windber squad went 12-1 and won the District 5/6 A Championship defeating the Huskies 10-7 in a memorable Championship game at Mansion Park. The Ramblers were led by the all everything Jeff Slatcoff. The Tribune Democrat's Offensive Player of the year in 2000 rushed for 15 Touchdowns on top of passing for 1,751 yards. He also led the area in interceptions that season. He could do it all. His main target was Robby Kolson.  Kolson caught 45 passes for 969 yards and 11 scores, which led the area.  The dynamic duo took the Ramblers to a 12-1 record and an appearance in the state playoffs. They ultimately fell short to Sharpsville out of District Ten.

The Stars-Jeff Slatcoff was the star of stars on this team. He took them to a perfect regular season and a win over the tough Bishop Carroll squad in the Championship. Slatcoff was a really good Basketball player for the Ramblers and was named All State. I do believe he chose a career at Mount Aloysious for hoops.  Robby Kolson was a key target for the Ramblers and had an outstanding season. Jake O'Roark had a good season running the ball for Windber as well.

The Argument-The Internet has not been too kind to my research on the 2000 Windber Ramblers. I would love to do this team the justice it deserves.  The knock on Windber is that they play in the historically weak West Pac Conference.  The 10-7 victory over Bishop Carroll should erase those doubts.  Jeff Slatcoff is one of the better athletes to play on the list and his season proves that.  This team was a top notch A team and would beat plenty of the current day teams in that classification.  The offense on that team was something to behold.  If ANYONE has any more helping information on this team it would greatly appreciated.  Leave a comment or contact the D6 Sports Network Facebook or Twitter.

D6 Sports Network Twenty Greatest Teams of the 2000's. #14

14. 2006 Bellwood-Antis

The Scoop-The Bellwood-Antis Football program is as solid as they come for District Six. The 2006 season was just another chapter for legendary coach, John Hayes. Bellwood fell victims to their arch nemesis, Tyrone in the opening game 16-0.  After that, the Blue Devils started to roll.  A mid-season hiccup another good AA team in Philipsburg-Osceola proved to be the only other loss until the State Semi-Finals.  Bellwood's trademark in 2006 had to have been all state Running Back, Josh Kleinfelter. The senior back put on a season to remember.  Kleinfelter finished the season 2,289 yards and 33 touchdowns.  He went on to his second straight season on the Pennsylvania First Team All State.  Kleinfelter may have carried the offense, but it was a total team effort on defense. The Blue Devil D only allowed double digits four times out of fourteen games.  At times they were straight up nasty. As a team they combined for 25 interceptions and 9 fumble recoveries.  The Blue Devils ran through the "A" District Six playoffs with ease. They took down the District 3 Champ Steelton Highspire 28-8 setting up a match with the Southern Columbia juggernaut. The Blue Devils stood no chance against Henry Hynoski and company as they fell 35-0 to the eventual State Champs.

The Stars-Josh Kleinfelter is the headliner for the Blue Devils in 2006. He was a two time First Team All State pick.  Kleinfelter finished his career as one of the District's most prolific rushers. He went on to star at Lycoming College and had a productive career. Anthony Jenkins was named to second team all state as a Junior paving the way for Kleinfelter's banner season. He chose a career at Saint Vincent.  Jon Davila and Chad Coho were the key members for the defense, and my research can't find where they went on to play at the next level if they did.

The Argument-2006 Bellwood-Antis at 14?  Really?  Too high perhaps, or it may be just right.  This team did not have the Division One superstars. They did not play the toughest schedule in the world, but here is what they did have.  They have one of the district's most prolific Running Backs.  It does not matter where the kid played his college ball, Division One status is overrated when it comes to judging High School football players.  Kleinfelter was the real deal. This team did not have guys that stood out to you over the field., but as a team they were really good.  There is no way a list involving the best teams of the 2000's could not have a Bellwood-Antis team on it. It is as simple as that.  I like this team at 14 and they could hold their own and beat a few teams on this list.
