Well as an avid Sports fan there is always places you want to see, games that you always say, "I got to get to one before I die." Well here is my list, I've always wanted to see some of these things in person, rather then just watching it on TV. I've been to NCAA tournament first rounds, I've been to Notre Dame Stadium, I've seen a game in Williamsport, NFL and NHL playoff games, but there is much more I want to do, and much more I will do. Here are 30 things I would love to check off my list before I kick the can, maybe you would want to check out some of these things too.
30. Minnesota High School Hockey Championships- Maybe a little different then you were expecting, but this thing seems pretty interesting. Hockey in Minnesota is like Football in Texas, and Basketball in Indiana. It is taken very, very seriously. The tournament spans 4 days and features 16 teams in both classes, and is the most watched High School sporting event in the nation. Yeah its that big. They play at the Xcel Energy Center in downtown St. Paul, and it is filled to the rafters. Check out this crowd! Its High School, not the NHL....Unreal.
29. Los Angeles Lakers Home Game- Well I've never been to an NBA game, and I've never been to LA. If its the right time of year, I could easily be convinced to take in a game. The Lakers are the game's most storied team, and it is the place to be if you are rich and famous. Kobe won't be around forever, but the Lakers are the type of team that will always be good no matter what. I'd be all for going, I just wonder how much these seats cost...
28. Hall of Fame Induction in Canton or Cooperstown- I've been to Canton, but I was a little guy, I would love a return trip. Hall of Fames are some of the most interesting places in the world if you are a sports geek. I would be in heaven. Cooperstown is definitely on my bucket list by itself, but I would love to be there during an induction. The crowds and atmosphere definitely have to wake up the sleepy little towns. I'm going to try to make it to at least one at some point.
27. The Maui Invitational- Well for a College Basketball junkie, this one would be great. You get to spend Thanksgiving in Hawaii, and see seven top flight college basketball teams. Often most of the field is among the nations elite. Its like an NCAA regional in November. They play this thing in a High School sized gym, so you get to see everything up close and personal. This would be a great time, and you get to catch some great Hoops along the way. Pitt is heading there in 2014, anyone with me?
26. US Open, Tennis-I'm convinced that any sporting event held in New York City instantly becomes 100 times better. The Big Apple is the stage you want to be playing on, but just as important the stage you want to be spectating on. There is so much to do in between matches and lots of fine establishments along the way. New York is awesome, and this tennis tournament is one you don't have to stay up all night to watch. I'd go to this in a heartbeat. Flushing is calling my name....
25. Beanpot College Hockey Tournament- Well it is my second Hockey tournament on the list, and this one seems like another great time. The Beanpot features the four major Boston schools, Boston College, Boston U, Harvard, and Northestern. Boston is a great college town and all schools participating make this thing special. There are plenty of things to do in Boston, and plenty of places to eat and drink. It has always been a town I have wanted to see, might as well catch some great Hockey along the way.
24. Texas High School Football Championships- Being from Western Pennsylvania, High School Football is important. It has nothing on Texas, though. It is a way of life down there, and seeing the championships would be something else. These teams are like mini universities, and the crowds are unbelievable. The 5A division actually will outdraw many Bowl games, as it will pull in upwards of 40,000 fans. All to watch 17 year olds play football. Football reigns supreme in Texas, even at the High School level.
23. Harvard vs. Yale Football game- Well most of the participants of this game will be CEO's, Doctors, and Lawyers. For one game each season, this game is pretty important to the esteemed universities. Simply known as , "The Game" it is one of college football's oldest rivalries dating back to 1875. The two stadiums for the two schools are surprisingly big venues as at one time both teams were national powers. The days of the teams being relevant are long gone, but "The Game" remains one of football fiercest games. Hell I love football of any kind, I'll definitely go to a game that dates back to the 1800's.
22. Little League World Series Final- I went to Williamsport as a kid and it is definitely a special place, and I would recommend it to anyone. The fields are in pristine condition and the complex is something to behold, and best of all it is absolutely 100% free. Its Little League Baseball, even at the World Series itself. The concession stands are reasonable and its pretty good baseball too. These kids can play, especially when they are at this point of the world wide tournament. Sunday afternoon with the USA taking on one of the challengers from the world is always a highly competitive game and draws one heck of a crowd. 30,000 plus fills the stadium and the naturally fitting hillside in the outfield, quite a sight to behold with the mountains of Pennsylvania in the background.
21. Bayou Classic Grambling vs. Southern-The game is pretty good, but definitely takes a backseat to the halftime show. The Battle of the Bands is the real attraction and would certainly be worth the price of admission. The game has been taking place since 1974, and is always a big attraction as one the final games of the College Football season. The bands put on a show, and the teams battle it out for bragging rights. Everyone loves a good rivalry, and we all love marching bands with some swagger.
20. US Open, at Pebble Beach-I've made it to Pebble Beach once, pretty much just to look at it. I think it would be great to see the US Open take place here. The setting of this place is indescribable. The 17 mile drive is picturesque and worth going on in its own right, throw in the golf and you have something. The houses and the rocky coastline are as beautiful as it gets. The course layout is awesome to see on TV, it would be amazing to see it in person with the United State Championship on the line.
19. Butler Basketball Home game at Hinkle Fieldhouse- This old barn is one of the Cathedrals of the game of Basketball, and if you have seen the movie, "Hoosiers" you would understand the magnitude of the building. The movie takes place here, but the true story behind the movie also took place here as it is dubbed, "The Milan Miracle." As tiny Milan High School won the 1954 State Championship over the heavily favored Muncie Central. The arena is one of the oldest still in use today, and if you love Basketball, and if you love the movie this is one place you have to go.
18. Super Bowl- The Super Bowl may be low on the list for me, but that is for several reasons. If the team you like isn't in the big game, its not nearly as fun. Also, you miss all the commercials!! Still, America's biggest game would be fun to see in person. Along with the game, you get the hoopla with the halftime show and pregame ceremonies, and recently the game has been interesting, as it should be. The game features two of the best teams in the league playing for the ultimate prize, and you have to appreciate that.
17. Championship Boxing Match in Las Vegas- We are past Boxing's heyday, but the sport can still put on a show. And if worse comes to worse, you are still in Las Vegas. Not a bad place to be. But the famed fights in Vegas are hyped up and are historic. These things are filled with stars from Hollywood and are quite the spectacle to see. I would love to see Heavyweight Boxing become relevant again, but with the rise of the UFC, it seems as a long shot.
16. SEC Home Game- The SEC has pretty much taken the role of being the country's best football conference over the past decade, and while the on field product seems to be better then ever, the fanfare has always made this a big deal. Tailgating in SEC country seems like the real deal and would be the perfect experience for the college football fan. An LSU night game, or tailgating at Ole Miss, or a game at the Swamp, Between the Hedges, or in Alabama would be something I would love to see. The traditions are unlike any other, and the fans are as ravenous as they come. I love a good party, and good football.
15. Bears vs. Packer game at Lambeau-The game is one the league's best, and it is the longest running. The Packers and Bears have met 184 times throughout history and often with plenty on the line. The two teams have combined for 48 members in the Pro Football hall of Fame. Leambeau Field has a special aura about it, as it is in the smallest city in the NFL, yet is filled like a college stadium. The rivalry dates back to 1921, and the two teams have not lost hate for each other, especially the fan bases.
14. NBA Finals, Stanley Cup, or World Series Game 7- Game 7 is special in any series, especially when crowning a champion. After a grueling and lengthy season, you are met with a few rounds of heart-pounding divisional series before you make it to the finals. The Finals is the ultimate test to prove which team is better. Any team can beat anyone else in a one game setting, but it takes a lot and proves a lot when you can withstand a team for 7 games. Any of these three leagues always put on a classic game seven if it makes it that far. It is always worth watching no matter who is playing, but it would definitely be worth going when everything is on the line.
13. Big 5 Game at The Palestra-The Palestra is one of the marquee venues any Basketball fan must see. The old barn was opened back in 1927 and has seen thousands of Basketball games, and it most notably plays host to the "Big Five." This refers to the five major Division One Basketball teams in Philadelphia. Penn,Saint Josephs, LaSalle, Temple, and Villanova comprise the Big Five. The schools each have their own home arena, but for years most of the games were played at the Palestra, and to this day it is still used frequently and serves as Penn's home court. To see one of these historical battles at the Palestra would be a treat for any true Basketball fan.
12. NHL Winter Classic- The Winter Classic has grown in popularity through the years and has become a celebrated event during the NHL regular season. It has been held in NFL and MLB stadiums, and is taking on the challenge of filling up the University of Michigan's "Big House" which would put well over 100,000 spectators to see an NHL game. The game will always bounce around and take on different challenges in different cities. The outdoor concept is fun for the fans and players alike, I would love to see it live. It is turning into a pretty awesome event.
11. Pittsburgh Pirate Playoff game- In reality, this is my true #1.But it would be a homer pick on my part. PNC Park is often described as Baseball's best stadium, and at the very least the most beautiful one. The Pirates hold a special place in my heart and it would be my dream to see the stadium used in a playoff setting. I know I'll be there the first time it happens, I just wonder what my reaction will be? I may burst into tears or simply faint from excitement. I can't wait for this day. This is one thing on here I guaruntee I will be in attendence.
10. Sit in the Bleachers at Wrigley Field- Wrigley Field is one of the stadiums that I have to get to. I missed out on old Yankee Stadium, but I don't want to miss out on this one. The Stadium has a certain charm and plenty of character. Sitting in the bleachers would be right at home for me. I like the view from the outfield in term of watching a game. Wrigley is one the oldest stadiums in the game and one of the most iconic. It has played parts in movies and is one of the most recognizable fields in America. I'm just not sure I would handle it if I caught a Home Run ball, I guess if you are in Rome do as the Romans do.....
9. Kentucky Derby- I don't know if it gets much better then being at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May. The Derby is one of the most popular sporting events in America and has spanned the length of 15 decades. The Derby only last a two minutes, albeit the most exciting two minutes in sports. The overall appeal and atmosphere of the event is the true excitement. I would be happy just hanging out in the center pit or up in the stands. The Derby is one of the more iconic events in America, and Louisville seems like it would be a fun town with plenty of things to do. This would be a great weekend trip in the future. I just need to brush up on the lyrics for "My Old Kentucky Home" and get ready to sip on some Mint Juleps.
8. Michigan vs. Ohio State Football game- It is widely recognized as the best rivalry in College Football, although I'm sure the state of Alabama would argue that. The game is played in front of 100,000 in either of the team's stadiums. The Horseshoe and The Big House are two of the biggest and oldest stadiums in the country. The teams are often fighting for a Rose Bowl appearance, and the fans just flat out hate each other. I think it would be an intense game to go to, and the whole gay day experience would be plenty of fun. Ann Arbor and Columbus are two college towns that take this game very seriously.
7. College World Series- The College Baseball World Series in Omaha, Nebraska is one of my favorite sporting events to watch, but it would be a real treat to attend. The city of Omaha really takes to the tournament and provides a great home to the Baseball championships. Its not like the real World Series as this 8 team tournament has all the drama of March Madness held in June. Fresno State winning it all a few years back proved just that. The traditional pile on the pitchers mound after the game just show that college athletics are special, and this championship event is on par with any other.
6. Yankees vs. Red Sox game at Fenway Park- Baseball's biggest rivalry is always highly intense wherever its played, but the new Yankee Stadium does not have the same power as the old. Fenway Park is the oldest ballapark, and is still one of the most popular. The famed Green Monster and the intense Boston fans would be sure to make this a fun place to see a game. I'd love to a game here against anyone, but when the Yankees come to town it gets that much better. I do not care for either team all that much, but they are usually the two best and are playing for a lot. This game would be fun to watch, and observing the New York-Boston arguing up close would be cool to see. Boston is really on my list of destinations, and a Yankee game would be the ideal centerpiece for a trip to Boston.
5. The Final 4- The Final Four is the culmination of the Madness that takes place in March. It usually is where Cinderella is left at the door looking in, and the Big boys come to play. Recently, Cinderella stories have made it here and that may be a normal occurrence these days.In my opinion, the NCAA tournament is the greatest sporting event in America, bar none. From the first game to the last game, it is full of buzzer beaters and upsets and typically the best team does not always win. You just have to be hot for six game. The Final 4 is a big deal and held in a dome. The ideal scenario would be to sit in the lower bowl or you wouldn't see much. The overall excitement would drown out bad seats though. I'd love to go to a Final 4 in New Orleans if given the choice.
4. Sunday at The Masters- The Masters is the most celebrated golf tournament held in America. The only major that is held at the same course every year. Augusta National is one of the most beautiful settings for golf in the whole world, and the storied course has seen some of the greatest players and matches in the game's history. The Masters on a Sunday is often action packed and thrilling, it would be quite the spectacle to witness. Golf does not get much better then early April on a Sunday in Augusta, Georgia.
3. North Carolina vs. Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium- The Duke-UNC rivalry seems like an ESPN made for TV game, but don't say that on Tobacco Road. This game is very serious, and this rivalry is very real. UNC and Duke do not like each other. The game is important wherever its played, but when its played at Cameron Indoor it seems to have a special feel. The small arena and loud crowd add to the game's intensity. The crowd is right on top of the court and it adds to the drama. The teams are often among the nations top 10, so this would be just be a good game to watch minus the rivalry. Throw that in there, and that makes this thing great. I'd love to get to one of these games sometime in the future.
2. The Rose Bowl Game- I love the Rose Bowl and it is a must watch for me every New Year's Day. It does not matter who is playing, the game is special. There is a reason why it is called, "The Grand Daddy of them all" The game has plenty of history and tradition as it has been played since 1902. From the Tournament of Roses Parade in the morning to the game in the late afternoon, it is the most perfect setting for a College Football game. The way the stadium sits against the mountains and how the sun hits the field is awesome and I'd love to be a part of it. The game always offers a compelling matchup as it is a BCS Bowl, and always fills the stadium up. Bowl games are great, but the Rose Bowl Game is the greatest one.
1. Army vs. Navy Game- The game between the two service academies has always drawn to me. The tradition of the game, the fact that the cadets and midshipmen are marched on the field, and the intensity in which the game is played just appeals to me. The game is the regular season finale for College Football, and it rarely disappoints. Navy has dominated of late, but that does take away from the effort on either side. The game is important, but what these guys do after the game is even more important. It is a very emotional game and both teams could be 0-11, but the whole country will still be watching. I really need to catch one of these before I kick the can.

Couch Potato's Guide February 27th-March 4
Ahh the return of the infamous Couch Potato's guide on FloodSportsBlog. Yes if you are lazy and watch sports every night, this is your guide for all things on televised sports, and I will keep you informed on what to watch for the upcoming week. Its the end of Febuary Frenzy and we will be going right into March Madness this weekend. A very good stretch of sports in the coming months....The Madness, NBA and NHL races heat up, Opening Day for Baseball, and the Masters. Buckle up, its the best time of the year for sports.
10. New Jersey Devils at New York Rangers Monday 7:30 NBC Sports
Always interesting when the Devils cross the river into New York. The Garden has been buzzed lately captivated by the Knicks star, Jeremy Lin, But the NHL Rangers are not having a quiet season. In fact they have been in complete control of the Eastern Conference for weeks now. The Devils are firmly in the playoff race, but still are juggling for position with roughly 20 games left in the season for everyone. These teams are in close proximity to each other and you will always see rival fans in the stands, maybe you will catch this guy....
9. Michigan State at Indiana Tuesday 7:00 ESPN
Indiana has had a season to remember after a shameless few campaigns in Bloomington, respectability has been restored. Actually more then that, The Hoosiers have been ranked for weeks and have already knocked off the number 1 and number 2 ranked teams at the time. Assembly Hall is a true cathedral to the game of Basketball and it has been rocking this season, so perhaps there is still magic to beat another top 10 team. Sparty has had a much better season then expected. Tom Izzo is a true winner and thrives in this time of the season. This will be a true battle, as the Big Ten has been all season long.
8. Chicago Bulls at San Antonio Spurs Wednesday 9:00 ESPN
Well a nationally televised NBA game featuring the #2 ranked team in each conference. Both teams are serious title contenders, well at least to this point they look like it. The Spurs are old, like really old. That makes it all the more shocking to see them doing so well. The Spurs are currently 11-1 in the month of February, an incredible streak, especially without Mannu Ginobli. The Bulls have been hot all year long and are as dangerous as anyone in the East. They will continue to have a back and forth battle with Miami for the top spot in the East.
7. Boston Bruins at New York Rangers Sunday 12:30 NBC
Well the NHL Trade deadline is on Moday, will the Rangers have acquired Rick Nash from Columbus for this game? He could be in New York, but if not the Rangers will still be sitting pretty the rest of the way. The Bruins may be their toughest competitor the rest of the way. The defending champs are playing well, and definitely have repeat on their minds. The Rangers hold a 2-0 record against Boston so far, big game for both teams. The Bruins will need a lights out stretch to steal the number one seed away from New York.
6. Kentucky at Florida Sunday 12:00 CBS
The Wildcats embarrassed the Gators in Rupp Arena only a few weeks prior. And well, thats understandable. Kentucky is loaded once again under John Calipari. They have a projected 5 first round picks, possibly 6. Florida is a nice team but definitely under matched against the big blue machine. Bradley Beal is a top flight future NBA star for the Gators, actually reminds me a little of Dwayne Wade. Anthony Davis of Kentucky is all but assured to be the number 1 pick in the draft, and is being billed as the National Player of the Year. At the very least, if you want to watch this game, you will be seeing plenty of future pros.
5. Louisville at Syracuse Saturday 4:00 CBS
Nothing better than a Big East Brawl. Pitino-Boeheim. Cardinal Red and the Orange. The Carrier Dome will be rocking. Pitino wasn't too shy about ripping on the departing Big East teams, maybe the Orange student section hasn't forgotten. The side stories will be good, but the game will be really good too. Louisville runs a pretty successful zone, nothing like the Syracuse zone, but the teams are both deep and talented. Syracuse has a little more firepower, but the Cards aren't too far off. The Orange are all but locked in as a number 1 seed, Louisville can make a push to be in the 3 seed range, and a win here would be a good start.
4. Ohio State at Michigan State Sunday 4:00 CBS
The best league's two best teams will be ready to go at it to cap off the regular season, What is better than that? The first meeting saw the Spartans go into Columbus and win by a convincing 10 point margin. Ohio State has revenge on their minds. Both teams are legitimate candidates to be playing in the Final 4 and feature some of the country's most talented and valuable players. Michigan State's Draymond Green is a do everything forward that has willed this team into the top 10. Jared Sullinger is a lottery pick waiting to happen for the Buckeyes. He is a poised big man that teams build Final 4 runs around. This game will be good, not high scoring, but good.
3. New York Knicks at Boston Celtics Sunday 1:00 ABC
Is Linsanity for real? Well for a few weeks, it has been as real as real can be. People cut down on his turnover production, but it all depends on how you judge a Point Guard. Hey the guy wins and makes his teammates better. And the Knicks are 9-3 in the 12 games Lin has played significant minutes. Keep doubting, and the guy just might keep winning. The game is big because the two teams find themselves in 7th and 8th place in the conference. Both teams needs to make a push to get any further than that. The Lin-Rondo matchup will certainly be worth watching, and hey its a New York-Boston day all around, see # 7. And the real question can Jeremy Lin make three straight appearances on Sports Illustrated's cover?
2. Miami Heat at Los Angeles Lakers Sunday 1:00 ABC
As much as it pains me to say, LeBron James is the best player in the league. Kobe Bryant is still the better player of the generation, though. Kobe has the hardware to prove it. The game has big implications as it could prove to be a Finals preview. Will the Lakers somehow land Dwight Howard? Will Pau Gasol be around much longer? Will the loaded Heat break through with a championship this year? Can LeBron get that elephant off his back? These games are always fun to watch, and they are really fun to watch while on Twitter. I can't stress it enough, add twitter to your sport watching experience, its a nice addition.
1. North Carolina at Duke Saturday 7:00 ESPN
Well here it is, the ESPN made rivalry itself. Don't get me wrong, its a great game, but ESPN never lets you forget how great it is. Austin Rivers shot still may be the highlight of the year. Duke-Carolina are both capable of winning it all. Roy Williams and Coach K are two of the best in the business. There may be over 10 future NBA players involved in this one. Just another typical UNC-Duke battle. The top ranked recruit of 2010 Harrison Barnes will look to out duel this year's top recruit, Austin Rivers. The battle of Tobacco Road takes center stage on Saturday night primetime, so if you only can catch one game this week, you might as well watch Duke....I mean Dick Vitale in his home environment.

Paul Chryst's 1st Recruiting Class.
Paul Chryst will have his Panthers suited up and ready to go against Youngstown State in a mere 213 days. There is plenty of work for him in the coming months before anyone can start thinking about that game. The Spring practice is there to install a system for the players(their third in as many seasons) and to get a feel for the staff and how they will work together. He also has to make a decision regarding the quarterback "situation" Pitt currently faces. Chryst also has to sure up this recruiting class and get some of these talented players ready to contribute right away. He has had a little over a month to make this thing work. The core of the recruiting class stayed together while he was adding and dropping some stragglers and weeding out the guys not fit for his style of play. Chryst handled the job very well and was able to land a few players of his own, and keep the blue chippers already there. Here is a ranking, and preview of what there is to look ahead for the Panthers.
1. Rushel Shell. Running Back Aliquippa, PA. 4 Star Rivals 5 Star Scout.
Rushel is the most elite player Pitt has brought into the program since perhaps, LeSean McCoy. McCoy was a dominant force from day one, and Shell has that type of ability. He is a 6-0 210 physical runner, that has a good burst. His services were courted by just about every elite program in the country. Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, and West Virginia were among the teams out for Shell. Chryst's offenses in Wisconsin were run heavy that featured multiple backs. Shell will fit right into what Chryst likes to do. He can come in and take some carries alongside Ray Graham right away, and likely be the full time starter by his sophomore season. Running Back is a position that is always an easier transition then most, and Shell seems college ready.
2. Chad Voytik. Quarterback. Cleveland, Tennessee. 4 Star Scout 4 Star Rivals.
Voytik is a talented quarterback that is coming into a program in desperate need of one. He is not the traditional 6-5 drop back passer, but is more of a scrambling threat. He is generously listed at 6-1, but looks closer to 5-11. That is not the world thing in the world, as you may have seen shorter guys have tons of success in college, most notably and recently, Russell Wilson. He is noted for being a competitor, and was one of the standouts at the Elite 11 quarterback camps in the summer. His size scared off some bigger programs, but he still received offers from Penn State, Clemson, Louisville, Virginia, and Vanderbilt among a number of other schools. He will at least be considered in the open quarterback debate in the Fall. He may not start, but may get the support of an anxious fan base looking for a quarterback.
3. Adam Bisnowaty. Offensive Linemen. Pittsburgh, PA. 4 Star Rivals 3 Star Scout.
Adam is a highly touted player in a position of great need for the Panthers. The hire of Chryst and Bostad to run Pitt's offense had to have been a nice solidifying key for Bisnowaty. Wisconsin's offensive success starts with their big and physical line play. A very ideal coaching situation for a young linemen. He is listed at 6-6 275, but appears to have the frame to hold more weight. He was offered to play at West Virginia, Purdue, Penn State, Michigan, Michigan State, and Florida. Its always good for a new coach to add top local talent right away, a good recruit anyway you look at it.
4. Deaysean Rippy. LineBacker. McKees Rocks, PA. 4 Star Rivals 4 Star Scout.
Daeysean turned into a nice signing day pick up. He likely was looking out of state if Todd Graham was still the coach for Pitt. I guess he wasn't a fan.(Join the Club) He has quite an impressive offer sheet, and his four star rating seems warranted. The list of offers includes Alabama,Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio State, and USC. He will project as an outside linebacker at Pitt, and should have all the physical tools to back them up. Sometimes when coming from a "A" High School program, fundamentals are lacking. He may have a big learning curve ahead, but he obviously was rated to play at big time schools, and was offered to play at big time schools. He has the talent, but may need a year or two to develop.5. JP Holtz. Tight End. Pittsburgh, PA. 4 Star Scout 3 Star Rivals.
JP Holtz currently will be the biggest recruit in Chryst's tenure. The guys above were committed throughout the Todd Graham regime, but Holtz was heavily recruited and won over by Paul Chryst. This guy does not seemingly get the national respect, but he has an impressive offer sheet with teams like Arkansas,Penn State, Michigan State, Michigan, and Boston College along with many others. Chryst really went after Holtz, even bringing in the services of former Pitt legend, Mike Ditka, in the recruiting process. Holtz has ideal size to play Tight End at this level, standing at 6-4 240. He also has the athletic ability, as he played Quarterback and Running Back during his high school career. There are not many Tight Ends in Pitt's system, and Holtz has the physical tools to play a role right away.
6. Demitrious Davis. Athlete. Austintown, Ohio. 3 Star Recruits 3 Star Scout.
Demitrious Davis came as a package deal with his twin brother, but he is touted a little bit higher. Demitrious played Quarterback in High School, but his speed and athletic ability projects him to be either a Wide Receiver or Cornerback in college. He is speedy and quick and garnered a slew of offers, most of which were shared with his brother. Although he was offered by Oregon without his brother. You know if Oregon likes an athlete he has to be pretty fast and athletic, good sign for Chryst.
Darryl Render is a player of good stature in a position of need. Pitt is lacking in defensive linemen, and Render should provide some much needed depth to a depleted position. Render comes from a top notch program out of Cleveland in St. Ed's. He should be well prepared to play college football. Most of his offers come from the MAC, but still a few Big East schools pulled the trigger. Either way, 6-3 240 is good workable size at this level.
Chris, along with his brother Demitrious, should bring speed and explosiveness to Pitt. They were a very dangerous duo in High School, and look to bring the same type of energy. Chris is fast and athletic, but does not seem to have the same talent as his brother. He and his brother got all the same offers, except the other one got an Oregon offer, showing he is a little bit better. Chris may be moved to defensive back, but could see time at receiver. He is not an immediate impact type of guy.
7. Bam Bradley. Safety. Trotwood, Ohio. 3 Star Rivals 3 Star Scout.
Bam Bradley was a late addition to the Pitt recruiting class, but certainly a welcomed one. He is the ideal size for a safety at this level and will be an upgrade in size from the current Pitt Safety's. He was courted by the former coaching staff, but still showed an interest in Pitt after Chryst was hired. He has a good list of offers from the likes of West Virginia, Tennessee, Stanford, Penn State, and Ohio State. He has great size and skills, and should be a factor in a few years. He may be looking at a redshirt, but could be looking at playing time the following season.
8. Darryl Render. Defensive End. Lakewood, Ohio. 3 Star Rivals. 3 Star Scout.
9. Terrell Jackson. Defensive Tackle. Columbus, Ohio. 3 Star Rivals. 3 Star Scout.
Jackson was another signing day decision for Pitt. He is 1 of 5 Ohio recruits for the class of 2012. That is a good start into a very talent rich state for Paul Chryst. He is the lone interior defensive linemen being added to the program. He has lots of MAC offers and a few Big Ten offers to his name. He is not overly big, but should fill out well in a college weight training program. At 6-3 260, he is not too big to work with. He was not on the radar until recently.
10. Ryan Lewis.Corner Back. Redmond, Washington. 3 Star Rivals. 3 Star Scout.
Ryan Lewis was another Chryst recruit. Lewis is somewhat of a Pitt legacy, as his Uncle Tim was a former Panther. He visited Pitt in late January and committed days later. He seems like a late developer as his only offers are from Utah and Colorado. At least he was offered by two Pac 12 teams. It may take him some time to work his way into any sort of playing time, because there are plenty of corners in the system.
11. Chris Davis. Athlete. Austintown, Ohio. 3 Star Rivals. 3 Star Scout.
12. Trenton Coles, Wide Receiver. Clairton, Pennsylvania. 3 Star Rivals. 3 Star Scout.
Trenton Coles comes to Pitt off of one impressive High School career. He won three straight "A" Championships in Pennsylvania with the Clairton Bears. Coles was a big part of all three titles. He is a state sprinting champion and it never hurts to add that kind of speed to the football program. He did not garner a lot of offers, but Pitt appeared to be his choice before anyone else could get to him. He is 6-3, giving Pitt a receiver with some size. Graham recruited many little speedy guys, giving them a lack in taller wideouts, Coles should fit that need. He will not play at all next year, but could slowly work his way into playing time over the years.
13. Devon Porchia. Linebacker. Baltimore, Maryland.3 Star Rivals. 2 Star Scout.
Porchia was not a highly rated prospect, but should provide depth to an already deep Pitt Linebacking corps. Porchia's commitment may open up a pipeline through Maryland. Porchia did not have a real big list of offers, but Wake Forest and Cincinnati did give him an offer.
14. Mike Caprara, Linebacker. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. 2 Star Rivals. 2 Star Scout.
Caprara did not get any other offers besides Pitt, but some feel he could be a sleeper. He comes from one of the nation's most storied programs in Woodland Hills. He happens to be the all time leader in tackling at the school. At the very least he knows how to play the game, but its a question to be seen whether he has the physical ability to play.
15. Jahmahl Pardner.Defensive Back.Rochester, New York. 3 Star Rivals. 3 Star Scout.
Pardner will add depth at Corner or Safety, but in all reality seems like an oversign. Pardner's offers were from all MAC or D1-AA schools. He has good height, but has little bulk to his frame. His speed may help him, but it will take a lot of work for him to get on the field.
16. Gabe Roberts.Offensive Linemen.New London, Wisconsin.2 Star Rivals.2 Star Scout.
Roberts did not have an offer from anywhere else. He was planning on being a preferred walk-on to play at Wisconsin. Chryst kept him in mind and is giving him a shot to play at Pitt. The report is that he was hurt a lot and never got a chance to prove his ability, but standing at 6-4 280 pounds is not a bad thing.
Chryst's overall grade- B
His best moves were to weed out some of Graham's bad recruits, and keep his best ones interested in Pitt. Shell and Voytik can be program changing players, and he kept them around.
Filling needs- C-
Pitt needed linemen, and Chryst signed only two. They touched base everywhere else but Fullback, also a position of great need.
Talent added B-
Shell, Voytik, Holtz, and Bisnowaty are all top notch, and a few others are second tier players that could develop. Chryst should get credit for driving out some weak recruits.

Why the Pitt Basketball slide will only last one year.
Pitt Basketball supporters and observers are in full panic mode, and for good reason. It has been quite some time since Pitt Basketball was on a six game losing streak. It has been a while since Pitt was "on the bubble" for the NCAA tournament. This is uncharted waters for a spoiled fan base that expects to be the best. Pitt Basketball went from a nobody to a high profile program seemingly overnight. The construction of the Petersen Events Center created a Basketball atmosphere on the campus, and created a program that could compete nationally. After nine seasons without an NCAA tournament appearance, Pitt has been in the Big Dance the past nine years. Those nine seasons include two number one seeds, one number two seed, and three number three seeds. This stretch has also seen the Panthers win two regular seasons Big East Championships along with two Big East Tournament Titles. Jamie Dixon raced out to 200 career wins as fast as anyone, he also holds the Big East's highest winning percentage, EVER. His resume includes an Elite 8 and two Sweet 16 appearances. That is why this six game losing streak is troubling. Pitt has been over the stench of mediocrity for some time now, and I guess people have forgotten how to deal with it. The people that see Dixon as overrated, or even the extremists that think he should be fired are laughable. They have to realize where the Basketball program was, and where it is now. Pitt is regularly a member in the nation's Top 25, actually more often than not, the Top 10. Pitt plays in the country's toughest conference, and they possess the highest winning percentage over the past eight seasons. Pitt is constantly playing on national television. The postseason success has yet to come, but its hard to dismiss the fact that Pitt is only school in the entire NCAA that has actually won an NCAA tournament game in each of the past six seasons.
When you take into consideration all of the facts listed above, you can conclude Pitt Basketball is a pretty good program. Pitt's recent struggles are not nearly as concerning as people are making them out to be. Many top programs go through struggles. Connecticut won a National Championship the year after they were in the NIT. Syracuse had their struggles, and North Carolina has not always been in the top ten this past decade. Pitt in the scheme of things is a young team. This team evidently was not ready for the rigors of an intense season. They have five freshmen and three sophomores. They are still learning about being contributors. That happens in major college basketball. Pitt's youth this season will translate to experience next season. Pitt will also add the best player it has ever added to the program. Things will be back to the norm next season. Steven Adams is a player to get excited about. He is legitimately a potential one and done prospect. He is a guy you can build a good postseason run around. Khem Birch was a highly rated guy, and thought he would be a similar prospect. That was not the case. He was weak and offensively challenged. Adams has a complete game, and will be one of the better Centers in the country next season. Also, Pitt adds a Point Guard in James Robinson that is a true Point Guard. He will play the position more like LeVance Fields, and he's 6-3. Pitt has the talent next season to be back in the Top 10, and they had the talent this season to do the same, they just happen to be missing an inside presence. I cannot count out Pitt the rest of the way because there is a lot of Basketball left, but things need to change right away for there to be a chance of a tenth straight NCAA appearance. Either way, the panic and worry over the losing streak is warranted, but patience will get you through it. Pitt will be back next season, count on it.

Insanely early look-ahead to the 2012 College Football season.
Being prepared is half the battle. And I'm preparing for College Football 2012.(spare the sports nerd joke) This season was wild and unpredictable. The BCS came up with two teams from the same conference playing each other in the Title. Bowl games saw some scores from video games, a quarterback from BAYLOR?! of all places won the Heisman. This season was odd to say the least, but what could be in store for 2012? There will be some familiar faces up top, but some new guys will be challenging for the BCS Title bid....Here's my take.

1. Georgia (10-4)-I have the Georgia Bulldogs as my early season favorite to take the road to Miami for the National Championship game. Why, you may ask? Aaron Murray is a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate, as he just tossed 35 touchdowns in his sophomore season. Sophomore Running Back, Isaiah Corwell looks to bounce back from an injury plagued freshmen season. The defense improved each and every game, and can have up to nine starters back. The schedule sets up nicely, as they avoid regular season games with LSU,Alabama, and Arkansas. The Dawgs will be a force in 2012.
2. USC (10-2)-The Trojans had a successful 2011 campaign, yet it was marred by the fact they were ineligible for post season play. The Trojans bounced back from a 5 loss season in 2010, and really they turned out to be a quality team. Matt Barkley shocked everybody and announced his intentions to stay for his senior season, that announcement alone is the reason why you see USC ranked so highly. Barkley is a franchise quarterback in waiting, and USC will benefit greatly from his services. The Trojans get Notre Dame and Oregon at home. Expect to see USC in a BCS Bowl at the very least, thats if they aren't down in Miami squaring off for a championship.
3. Alabama (12-1)-The defending National Champions are in great position to repeat, yet lose just enough to keep them off the number one ranking. AJ McCarron played well in spurts and looks poised for improvement . Eddie Lacy will look to take on a bigger role as Richardson will likely move on. The defense will always be good, Nick Saban will demand that. This team always gets the best recruits, they have one of the best coaches, and they are always going to be a contender under Saban. If the young players grow up quickly, you can definitely see a repeat. They are that talented.
4. Oregon (12-2)-The Ducks start the season among the nations top teams yet again. Oregon's success runs parallel with their athletic ability and speed. The 2012 edition of Oregon football should be no different. Darron Thomas will be running the show again, and is basically the Denard Robinson of the West Coast. Kenjon Barner and DeAnthony Thomas should provide the explosiveness on the outside, and there is a chance LaMichael James could be back. This team is dangerous in space and will always be up tempo. When they are clicking, they are really tough to beat. There is no colossal opener to this season, so the Ducks can be in the Title hunt for quite a while.
5. LSU (13-1)-LSU was the team in 2011, they were supposed to come out and dual with Alabama for the National Championship. They could not even move the ball, and the LSU faithful may be happy to see Jefferson exit. LSU's success is not based off of having a dominant Quarterback. They win with a powerful rushing attack, and having athletes at key positions. The three back set of Ware, Blue, and Ford return. The outside threats of Randle, Sheppherd, and Russell will also be back. The LSU defense is littered with pro prospects, and one of the nation's most dynamic players, Tyrann Mathieu. This team is capable of winning a lot of football games. They do need a Quarterback, and 5 star freshmen, Gunner Kiel just may be that guy.
6. Michigan (11-2)-Michigan is back. Brady Hoke came in and put together an eleven win campaign and a memorable Sugar Bowl victory. All the pieces are in place from last season, and this year they could be even better. Denard Robinson is back for his third stint as the starter in Ann Arbor, and may be poised for his biggest season yet. The speedy quarterback now has weapons at his disposal, and the Wolverines are a very quick and high powered offensive machine. Fitzgerlad Toussant developed into the back Rich Rodriguez could never find. Throw in an experienced receiving corps, and an ever improving defense and the Wolverines are the favorites to win the Big Ten and make a return to the Rose Bowl. The road will not be easy as they open with Alabama in Dallas, and must travel to Notre Dame.
7. Oklahoma (10-3)-The Sooner's prospects just recently picked up as Quarterback, Landry Jones announced he is returning. The catalyst to the Sooner's aerial assault propels them into the National Championship conversation. Dominique Whaley, the remarkable walk-on running back will look to return to his early season form. Kenny Stills will now be the go to guy as Ryan Broyles moves on to the NFL. The Sooners always have top talent, and Bob Stoops is bringing in another top notch class. Landry Jones will take this team as far as he can. Oklahoma needs to avoid loses to teams they should beat, and they can find themselves back in the BCS.
8. Nebraska (9-4)-Nebraska had a rough go at it in their first season in the Big Ten. They return many players and could be ready for the second time around. Taylor Martinez is a veteran playmaker that is always dangerous with his legs. Rex Burkhead is a dynamic running threat that will also be back. The Huskers bring back a veteran offensive line and the typical Nebraska "blackshirt" defense. Bo Pelini does a great job with Nebraska, and he gets Wisconsin and Michigan in Lincoln. Taylor Martinez needs to be a better passing threat, but this team has the talent to win plenty of games.
9. Arkansas (11-2)-The Razorbacks found themselves ranked third in the country in late November, and had a showdown with than ranked number 1 LSU, and they were humbled with a 24 point loss. Despite that, they have a really talented group returning and perhaps the SEC's best offense. Tyler Wilson had a really good campaign in his first year as a starter. He loses some weapons, but both leading rushers return. Some young receivers will need to step up, but Wilson should do fine tossing the ball to anyone. The offense will be solid, but the defense must improve if they look to unseat Alabama or LSU, both of which will be traveling to Arkansas to play. That could really help out the Hogs.
10. TCU (11-2)-TCU will be making its first appearance in the Big 12 in 2012. They have the talent, the program, and the coach to make some noise right away. TCU's only losses came in two wild shootouts despite losing many starters coming into this season. They reloaded, an impressive feat for Gary Patterson. Casey Pachall may not be Andy Dalton, but he is a winner and will only get better. The two leading rushers will be back, the top three receiving threats will return as well. The TCU offense can be potent, but their calling card is defense, and they return nine starters for next season. The Horned Frogs will be dangerous, and may steal the Big 12 Championship in their inaugural season.
2 Aaron Murray- The best player on my predicted best team. He has all the tools to succeed, and will have the exposure playing for a top team. Murray will be a good pro someday as well.
3 Tyrann Mathieu-The Honey Badger will be around next season. He has the strange ability to force fumbles, unlike anything anyone has ever seen. He is a true ball hawk and play maker. Things happen when Mathieu is around.
4 Sammy Watkins-The nations's most dynamic offensive threat is back. He can run the ball, catch the ball, and return kicks unlike any other. He is a guy you have to account for every play or he will break down your defense, and make it look easy.
5 Marcus Lattimore- Lattimore will be coming off a knee injury, but will still be the nation's premier tailback. He is a beast and hard to tackle. He has the right size and speed combination to be a very successful player at the next level.
1. Georgia (10-4)-I have the Georgia Bulldogs as my early season favorite to take the road to Miami for the National Championship game. Why, you may ask? Heisman Hopefuls.
1 Matt Barkley- He is the best player coming back for the 2012 season. He is a sure fire top 5 draft pick. He has the ability to lead USC to a National Championship. This guy is good, and my pick to take it home.2 Aaron Murray- The best player on my predicted best team. He has all the tools to succeed, and will have the exposure playing for a top team. Pennsylvania Football.....yikes.
Steve Adazzio was hired by Temple University on December 23, 2010. He is the longest tenured coach of the State of Pennsylvania's three division one college football programs. Since the day Adazzio was hired Pitt had recently fired Dave Wannstedt, hired than quickly fired Mike Haywood. Phil Bennett coached the bowl game. Pitt hired again in Todd Graham, and he subsequently left after one season. Meanwhile, in Happy Valley, Penn State was enjoying an unexpected rise in the rankings in the 2011 campaign. The legendary coach Joe Paterno garnered his 409th win and one week later, he was gone as a victim, or a culprit(depends how you look at it) in Jerry Sanducky's sick and twisted web. The football rich state was left with much turmoil and disgrace. The mainstay power of Joe Paterno ended overnight, and Todd Graham's tenure seemingly felt like one night. After careful and regimented processes the state's two largest institutions hired two men in hopes they can bring stability after a black eye of a season.
Both Bill O'Brien and Paul Chryst have the task of building trust, and that is a given with the way the two previous coaches went out. But from there, both programs have two very different set of problems that need to be corrected ASAP. The two jobs are different just as the two schools are different. Pitt and Penn State share the same state and passionate fan bases, but the schools, settings, fans, and just about everything else is different. The makeup of Oakland is much different than University Park. Heinz Field and Beaver Stadium are far from being similar. The jobs ahead share a common goal, but the way of going about them are very, very different. That is why I have a set list for each coach that I think they need to address and try to enact upon.....
2. Sell tickets- This is a BIG one for Pitt. It has been no secret throughout Pitt's history that attendance has been as issue. There are very few ways for Pitt to get big crowds. 1. They are ranked high. 2. Pitt has a chance to clinch a major bowl or 3. They are playing West Virginia or Notre Dame. The University of Pittsburgh is not a small school, they are not in a hard to reach little town, they have plenty alumni right in Western Pennsylvania. There is no real rhyme or reason why people do not attend the football games. Many point to the off campus stadium, the pro town atmosphere, or the variety of things to do in Pittsburgh. They seem more like excuses rather than reasons. Pitt is less than a third of the size of Penn State, they are never going to sell upwards of 100,000 tickets, it just isn't feasible, but getting 55,000 people on average is not asking a lot. I think the real reason is the lack of a good product. It is that simple for me. Pitt has always had trouble with attendance even with good teams, but if Pitt was a consistent top 25 team, I think you would see more people interested and more people buying seats. Paul Chryst needs to do just that. He needs to put a product that people will buy. Chryst needs to play a consistent brand of football that will not choke in big games, or lose games they have no business losing. He needs to drop the dark cloud from Pitt in big games. Pitt typically outplays their opponents, but just find ways to lose. Chryst needs to find ways to win. He has to be conservative, but daring enough to win games. College football is a simple model, but tough to carry out. Winning games puts people in the stands, more people in the stands attracts better recruits, better recruits means more wins and big bowl games ahead, and all that means more money for the University. Simple layout, tough to follow through.
3. Win the Big East in 2012.-This will likely be Pitt's last time through the Big East. They have a team that is built for a pro style set that Chryst runs. Ray Graham can be one of the best backs in the country, and Rushel Shell will be able to contribute right away. Pitt has talented receivers and tight ends and a big line that Chryst will like. They are short a quarterback for sure, but talent wise....Pitt can win the Big East next year. The defense actually was not too bad this year, and plenty of key faces return. Chryst has always been known to adapt to his player's strengths. This Pitt team was built on the mindset of playing the pro style offense of Frank Cignetti. Chryst has plenty to work with and Wannstedt was a pretty good recruiter, and this team is filled with former 4 star recruits. Pitt gets WVU at home this season(if WVU is still around), but if WVU bolts, Pitt instantly becomes the league's most talented team, it all depends on how Paul Chryst adjusts.
2. Keep Top local talent-Pitt sits in a very fertile recruiting area. The area surrounding the city of Pittsburgh has always churned out top talent, and still does to this day. There seemingly always is at least one top 50 type talent within 30 miles of Pitt's campus. Some year's Pitt can get that guy, but most times they fail to bring that guy in. Wannstedt brought in plenty of quality guys, but could never land a guy like Terrelle Pryor. Chryst lucks out by getting stud Running Back, Rushel Shell in his inaugural recruiting coup. Next year Robert Foster will be an elite top 15 player, and Patrick Kugler will likely find himself in the top 50 players. Those are the type of players Chryst needs to land. He has a good inside track to each prospect, but that needs to happen on a consistent basis. Western Pennsylvania isn't what it used to be, but it still churns out quality athletes Pitt can win with.
3. Be a mainstay-Paul Chryst seems sincere that he is appreciative of the job opportunity. He could just be the anti-Graham. Throughout Pitt's history, there has never been a coach that had an exceptionally long tenure. Paul Chryst should strive to be that guy. Pitt's coaching job got significantly better since leaving the Big East, it definitely is an upgrade playing in the ACC. With the exception of elite programs, there aren't many places better to be than Pitt. Paul Chryst has a chance to have a very successful career. Pitt has always been a place that had that potential to be a solid program, but is always missing something. Maybe Paul Chryst is that missing piece.
2. Win over the Penn State family-Most people thought Penn State would hire somebody that played for Paterno. They thought they would get a "Penn State guy." Bill O'Brien did not play for Penn State, he has no ties to the school whatsoever. This did not sit well with a lot of people. Notable alumni have been critical of O'Brien's hire, and that will not make his job any easier. LaVar Arrington and Courtney Brown have made it clear they are less than thrilled with the hire. Not that it really matters that ex-players aren't happy, it still would be good for O'Brien to have them on his side. Often the case with critical coaching hires, the fan base may be uneasy but the school and alumni are the ones that are to give support. This has been very far from the case. This will be an uphill battle for Bill O'Brien. He needs to show them he will honor and respect the Penn State program, and more importantly keep up with the winning tradition.
3. Bring in coaches familiar with the college game-Bill O'Brien needs to make in roads in the college game. He has been with the New England Patriots since 2007, and last coached college football in 2006 as the Offensive Coordinator at Duke University. His other college coaching stops included Maryland, Georgia Tech, and Brown. Those jobs hardly hold the magnitude of the Penn State football program. The Head Coaching job at Penn State is an extremely big deal. O'Brien will be recruiting guys and talent he would not have seen at his previous coaching stops. He would be wise to hire coaches that can bring in the talent he will need to go up against Ohio State and Michigan. Penn State's whole set up with facilities, atmosphere, and campus can recruit for itself, but so can a lot of places. 107,000 fans on gameday can only take you so far. The coaching staff needs to be well acquainted to the college landscape, and more specifically the Pennsylvania/Northeast region. Larry Johnson staying aboard is a good start. We will wait and see what happens with the rest of the staff.
2. Bring back a consistent National relevance-Penn State is usually a familiar face in the nation's top 25, but top 10? top 5?....not so much. Penn State is a great program, but they have not shown it as much recently. Penn State has not outright won the Big Ten since 1994. They did win the BCS bid twice in 2005 and 2008, though. Those seasons were special, but Penn State could do better. Ohio State has owned the Big Ten basically, and that goes hand in hand with the goal I have above. To be the best, you have to beat the best. Penn State is definitely good for solid 9-10 win seasons, but Ohio State seems to be good for 11-12 win seasons. Michigan and Wisconsin are on the rise as well. This is a tough league to completely control, but Penn State is more than capable of being a program playing in BCS games consistently. O'Brien needs to get a lot of things under control before these aspirations can begin, but they can happen a lot sooner than people think.
3. Not Be a "Stop Gap"- Penn State faithful were expecting, or maybe hoping for a bigger name. They wanted a Chris Petersen or a Mark Richt to come in and wow everyone. That obviously did not happen. Bill O'Brien was not on anyone's radar, let alone anyone's wishlist. There seemed to be a large outcry that this was not the right hire. The fanbase and the football alumni did not seem totally pleased. This had to put O'Brien in a tough and awkward spot. I'm sure he wants to come in and win, and prove the doubters wrong. He has all the motivation in the world. He has the resources of one of the most valuable college football programs in the country. He can win here, he needs to go out and prove it. There will be a lot of pressure for him to be fired if things go wrong, he needs to keep his cool and keep things moving forward despite the media and fan's expectations.
September 10, 2016 Penn State will travel to Pitt, it will be interesting to see if both coaches will still be there for the game.

Paul Chryst.
Short term goals.
1.Gain the player's trust. - This is a big one for Chryst. We all saw what Todd Graham do in a few month's time. Todd Graham made everything about himself. The fancy marketing with the "High Octane" approach to everything led many to believe he was a hot shot talker, and that is about all he ever was. He blamed and criticized players in the media. The losses were never his fault, or the staff's fault, it was the player's inability to learn his system. That did not sit well with fans and players alike. He burned plenty of bridges with players and his reputation with how he left. The guy left them a text message for crying out loud. Paul Chryst needs to handle the situation with the fans and university officials as well, but making in roads with his players needs to be priority 1. These are the guys that will be in the weight room, conditioning, and working year round for him. They invest plenty of time to be student athletes, Paul Chryst needs to prove that he is the player's coach that the Wisconsin people made him out to be. The players for Pitt sure let everyone know they did not like Graham and the way he lied through his teeth. This will be their fourth Head Coach in two years. They are mostly Wannstedt recruits, and they will be harsh on anyone that isn't the man that recruited them.
Long Term goals.
1.Become competitive nationally- It sure has been a while since Pitt has been a factor nationally. The past decade saw Pitt sneak up a few times, but not for serious lengths of time. Pitt's best stretch was from 1975-1983, in that span Pitt went 85-19-2 with two Sugar Bowl victories and one national championship. The great names like Tony Dorsett, Dan Marino, and Hugh Green are some of the best players in college football history. Pitt has not come close to that type of success since. The ability to win and play at a high level is possible, those nine years prove that. Paul Chryst has some nice recruits coming in without him really having to recruit any of them. There is good base for success. Pitt has the ability to attract top talent, but now they need to maximize their abilities, something Dave Wannstedt really struggled with. Paul Chryst will take the program into the ACC, while it is a step up from the Big East, it is no SEC by any measure. The league is winnable, and Chryst needs to build up a team that is ready to compete. Can he do it? Absolutely. Will he be able to? Thats another story. He has plenty of tools to get started.
Bill O'Brien
Short term goals
1. Build Trust-Penn State has always been a model of consistency. They had the same coach since 1966. There was always a sense that if you turn on a Penn State football game Joe Paterno will be there. JoePa was the rock to the Penn State football program. He is Penn State football, and it is very hard to imagine seeing anyone other than him on the sidelines or in the booth. Joe built up the football program and the school in his tenure, he did more things for Penn State than any coach has done at their respective program. The way Joe Paterno went out did not sit well with people. It is still in question whether Joe had any guilt or further knowledge then let on, anyway you look at it, it just would not have been appropriate for him to coach anymore. Despite Joe Paterno's exit and dark clouds around him, he is still very well revered by many Penn State alums. He is the only thing most Penn State fans have ever known, and to be the guy following a legend can't be easy. Bill O'Brien will have a tough road ahead and may get scrutinized more than the typical new coach. O'Brien needs to prove that he can keep things rolling in Penn State. He has to show that Penn State will be the same brand they have always known. The players and former players will be loyal to Paterno. The fan base is split and some may have a real tough time buying into O'Brien. Penn State fans had expectations that they would hire a slam dunk, and most do not see O'Brien as that. The one thing on his side is that his expectations are low, he may surprise a lot of people.
Long Term Goals
1. Compete with Urban Meyer on field and recruiting-As I mentioned before, Pennsylvania is a talent rich state. This does not mean exclusively Pittsburgh, but the whole state. The recently hired Ohio State coach, Urban Meyer is well aware. Within one week of his hire, he was in Hershey watching the State Championships and came home with the most coveted recruit in Pennsylvania. Ohio State landing Noah Spence sent an early message to Penn State and Pitt and all others that dip into Pennsylvania for talent that he is going to try to take the best from the state. Noah Spence is a top notch player, but also comes from a talent rich High School in Bishop McDevitt. Meyer has one step in the door on anyone else that will go there. He even tried to lure the second most coveted prospect in Rushel Shell away from Pitt within a week of his hire. He knows what he is doing. Penn State has struggled recently within Pennsylvania losing out on top players to Ohio State, Michigan, and Pitt. That is unacceptable for them. O'Brien should strive to take the top players in his own backyard. He needs to start building up his Pennsylvania connects and focus out of state later. Ohio State is going to be back on top within two-three seasons, its almost inevitable with Urban Meyer at the helm. Penn State has had a poor track record with the Buckeyes of late. They have gone 3-7 in their past ten meetings. They are Penn State's closest rival, and a chief recruiting foe. Winning on the field means winning recruits off of it. Penn State really needs to measure themselves up again Ohio State. They are the premier program in the North.
