My Reaction.

The Pirates did not make that one over the top deal that makes them instant World Series contenders. But take a look, Did anybody? I did not see one player that would completely separate a team from the pack.  The Pirates got good value for giving up little in value. Neal Huntington went out and got good pieces that can help this team win this year, but will keep this team in contention for a while.  The critics all along said the Pirates could not give up Starling Marte,Jameson Taillon, and especially not Gerrit Cole. The Pirates did just that. They gave up minimal prospects that were not untouchable. They did not land Shane Victorino or Hunter Pence, but from seeing the returns the Phillies received, it was wise the Pirates did not trade for those guys. Other than that, there were not many other big name players dealt. Chase Headley, Justin Upton, and Shin Soo Choo did not get traded. Obviously other contending teams did not want to part with their top prospects either. The Pirates may not have gotten the "wow factor" but nobody really did.
The Pirates brought in a Pitcher that will be a valuable #2 the rest of the way this year and will be around for next year. Wandy Rodriguez is the best acquisition the Pirates made. He was also one of the better pitchers on the market. Ryan Dempster and Zach Greinke were the only pitchers that commanded more attention. The Pirates were able to land Rodriguez for three mid level prospects. The Pirates also went out and got a player in Travis Snider, that could turn into the Pirates future five hole hitter. They gave up a good relief pitcher in Brad Lincoln, although Lincoln has had a very suspect career until this season. Neal Huntington has shown the ability of finding good relief pitchers in his tenure, I assume he will add a few in the offseason. The Pirates also went out and grabbed Gaby Sanchez from the Marlins for Gorkys Hernandez.  Hernandez is a good defensive outfielder, but has very limited offensive skills. He had no role with the Pirates any longer and the Pirates added a former All Star First Basemen in the process with Sanchez. He is having a rough season, but has played well in the past and is under team control for three more seasons.  The 33rd pick in the draft was also dealt to Miami, but the Pirates already hold two top 30 picks. The Pirates made a late move shipping Casey McGehee to the Yankees for veteran reliever Chad Qualls. This deal is not anything exciting, but McGehee no longer had a role on the team with the Sanchez acquisition.
The Pirates have loaded up for the future. The core group that has led the Pirates to their record to date is in tact. Andrew McCutchen,Neil Walker,Garrett Jones, and Pedro Alvarez are all having successful seasons. Travis Snider and Starling Marte are young guys that will build the core and help now. Barmes and Barajas have been good veterans to hold this thing together. The pitching staff improved with Rodriguez, the other starters need to stay consistent.  The Bullpen is weaker, but is still one of the best in the league. This team will be the same team that has competed with the Reds all year long. Alex Presley,Jose Tabata, and Casey McGehee are not players that should be starting in a pennant race. The Pirates got rid of some dead weight in some regards and have a talented roster coming up next season. Huntington will spend some money on pitching in the offseason, and Gerrit Cole could and should be here next year. This team is young and competing, there is no reason to believe they will not continue to compete next year and beyond.

Trade Deadline: Travis Snider.

The Pirates went out and got a bat before the 4:00 trade deadline today. Travis Snider comes over from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for Relief Pitcher, Brad Lincoln.  The deal will put Snider as the new Right Fielder to go along with Andrew McCutchen and Starling Marte. The Pirates Outfield will now feature a 25,24,and 23 year old that are all under control for years to come. Travis Snider is not one of the names Pirate fans have been hearing going into today. Shane Victorino, Shin Soo Choo, and Juan Pierre were among a number of different names the Pirates were linked to the past few weeks. Neal Huntingdon went out and got a wild card player and it could pay off in the end.
Travis Snider is a 24 year old Outfielder from Toronto. He was widely regarded as one of the top prospects in all of baseball for years, but has struggled to make a name for himself with the Blue Jays. He is a former first round pick and is known to have good power. Snider finally broke through this year in 2012. He was hitting very well in AAA and had been moved to the Major League club recently. Snider has 3 Home Runs in 34 MLB At Bats this season. He comes at a relatively good price.  Brad Lincoln seems to be the pitching version of Snider. He too was a former first round pick that took a while to develop. Lincoln seemed that he had finally had things figured out. Lincoln still has a long way to go into establishing himself as anything of value. He could be a closer, he could still be a starter, or stay as a middle reliever. Lincoln was doing a fine job here, but it was the right time to part ways with the former number 4 overall pick.
What does this all mean moving forward?  The Pirates have their Outfield set for years to come. Snider could be the corner outfield slugger the Pirates have coveted for some time. Shane Victorino for two months obviously was not worth Brad Lincoln, but Snider for a few seasons was enough for Huntington to pull the trigger.  The 2012 Pirates seem to have a set lineup going forward, and could still not be done trading. Kevin Correia could be a trade candidate. Jose Tabata is now an interesting piece. The Pirates rotation has been very unsettled of late. Veterans AJ Burnett and Wandy Rodriquez seem to be good anchors. Jeff Karstens has proven to be reliable as well. Erik Bedard and James McDonald have not been right for a while.  Do the Pirates give Correia another look, or do they package some mid level prospects with Correia and try to nab another starting pitcher?  Do the Pirates look for a Relief Pitcher to sure up the Bullpen?  Jared Hughes' success made Lincoln expendable in my opinion. They could still look for a Lefty to upgrade over Watson. We are coming up on 14 hours.

The Biggest Week of the Year.....I Mean Last Two Decades.

I am in the "lost generation" of being a Pittsburgh Baseball fan. I am like many others that have been born in the late 1980's and early 90's. We have never, ever seen a good baseball team. We have never really tasted playoff baseball. October is Football season. The night Sid Bream literally and figuratively ended the Pirates success, I was 1 year, 11 months, and 10 days old. As much as I try to remember that infamous night in October of '92, I can't. I was too young to know what it was like. I was not able to taste what winning baseball was like. All I know is that it happened. All any of us know is that the Pirates were fun to watch in the early 90's. They had some marvelous teams in the 1970's, and they pulled off the greatest upset in baseball history in 1960. I know this all happened, and it is wonderful. But what does that do for me? I am just a mere member of the "lost generation." I hear stories of Roberto Clemente,Willie Stargell, and Barry Bonds, but I only know the visions of Derek Bell, Jeromy Burnitz, and Raul Mondesi.
The reality of postseason baseball is still a dream to me. It can not and will not be a reality until that day comes. Nevertheless, the Pirates are in contention 101 games into the season.  Contention? Actually more like serious players. The Pirates are in the front of the Wild Card race, and sit only three games back in the division, despite the Reds seemingly never losing a game. This is the closest thing to meaningful baseball I have ever come across. This is getting fun to watch.  This is not the 2011 "cool we're not in last for a few months!!" feeling, no this is the "Holy Hell the Pirates might be able to pull this thing off" feeling. The week of July 30th-August 5th will be the biggest week of my, OUR baseball watching lives. These six games mean more to the Pirates than any six games have meant to them in 20 years. The Pirates season and staying power will be tested in these next seven days. The six games will say plenty about the 25 players and Clint Hurdle, but the next two days will say a lot about the management, and how far both parties have come.
The Pirates are right there. Jerry Meals did not blow a call. Andrew McCutchen is not fading away. Neil Walker, Pedro Alvarez, and Garrett Jones are hitting the baseball. Brad Lincoln,Jason Grilli, and Joel Hanrahan are saving the games. AJ Burnett is pitching like an ace. Wandy Rodriguez is here, not Ryan Ludwick. There are so many reasons to point out that this is 2012, not 2011 all over again. This team is better. This division is weaker. The Pirates can make a serious play moving forward. The deadline is Tuesday, and it will be the last chance for the Bucs to improve their inconsistent offense. They need a bat, and they need it badly. Neal Huntington's smart moves sometimes are overlooked, but he has made some good ones recently. He needs to try to pull off another one.
The Pirates are coming off a rather poor week. The 4-3 record against the Cubs and Astros was not anything to write home about. They played poorly and were lucky to even win four games this week. They need to step it up this week. The three games with the Cubs in Wrigley Field are equally as important as the three with the Reds.  The Pirates can no longer play around with struggling teams. The Pirates can not play a dud and go into Cincinnati down 4-5 games. The team understands the giant collapse if 2011 can not happen again, but it is time to put the talk away and let the actions be known. They hold a lot of their fate in their own hands. It is time to prove this team can compete for a full season. The "lost generation" needs it. The rest of Pittsburgh needs it, and the team needs it.

The hump is in sight, time to get over it.

The late days of July is where the dream ended last season. It was the proverbial "hump" the Pirates failed to get over that season.  The Pirates added bats like Ryan Ludwick and Derek Lee in hopes they would carry the offense into playoff contention the remainder of the way.  That methodology obviously did not work. The Pirates offense was in trouble last season, but it was the pitching that failed them in 2011. The 2012 Neal Huntingdon learned his lesson and went out and addressed the pitching. Wandy Rodriguez is a veteran lefty that comes at the right price. They gave up average prospects with little hope of them turning into star major leaguers. They also got Houston to take on some salary and he will help form a solid rotation for next year.  Wandy Rodriguez will help sure up a rotation and likely take over for a shaky Kevin Correia.  The pitching seems loaded up and ready to go into August and September and it can carry the Pirates to a lot of wins, as it already has this season.
The Pirates have not stopped with pitching. The call up of Starling Marte will add a spark to an offense that was humbled against the lowly Cubs. Marte is a fast aggressive outfielder that will breathe some fresh air into the lineup. He will play an exciting brand of baseball and his skill set will remind people of Andrew McCutchen. The comparisons stop there, similar skills, not actual similar game.  It is near impossible to predict how he will play for the rest of the season and beyond, but the hype and anticipation will come into fruition tomorrow night in Houston. The offensive help should not stop there. The Pirates can still stand to upgrade with a Right Fielder, First Basemen, or Shortstop.  Chase Headley, Shane Victorino, and Hunter Pence are all potential trade candidates. There are sure to be more options beyond those three. Will the Pirates be willing to trade prospects to upgrade in two spots?  I believe they will. Gerrit Cole and Luis Heredia seem untouchable. Jameson Taillon is pretty near that level as well. I could see a guy like Alan Hansen being traded. This team is good, but they need another bat. A series with five runs against the fifth place Cubs is pretty telling that they could use one. This team is seriously not far off from getting over the hump, they need to get over.

Heritage Conference Football Preview 2012.

I am now giving you my third installment of my preview series for District 5/6 Football.  The popular LHAC and ICC previews has led for a demand for other conferences.  I still hope to give you a WestPac and Mountain League preview also. I hope I give a fair and accurate preview for these teams. The Heritage is not my specialty, but I will do my best.
The 2011 Heritage League was dominated by one team, and that was Ligoneir Valley.  The Rams are the only AA team in the Heritage and their size was evident. The Rams lose some key cogs to their vaunted rushing attack, but Ryan Torrance is back. Torrance could be the best back in the league and will be up for a big year.  The Penns Manor Comets had a banner year as they posted a 12-2 record. They won the District Title and reached the state semi-finals. Penns Manor has star player Danny Ferens back for his Senior year.  Marion Center, Blairsville, and Northern Cambria are all coming off playoff seasons and will look to return to postseason play.  Homer Center, Saltsburg, and Purchase Line all suffered difficult seasons. United missed the playoffs for the first time since 2008 and will look to respond in 2012.  The league has some star players and some serious threats to take home a District Championship.

1. Penns Manor (12-2)
KEY Players-Danny Ferens (QB) Corey Brown (TE) Steven Dumm (LB)
The Penns Manor Comets enter 2012 as the odds on favorite to win the Heritage conference. The Comets had an outstanding 2011 campaign and there is a true belief it can be duplicated. That belief starts with one player, Danny Ferens. The value of Ferens to Penns Manor is immeasurable. He will be in his 4th year as the starter for PM. Ferens has 3,776 career rushing yards and 55 rushing touchdowns along with 1,639 passing yards and 22 touchdowns. Penns Manor is 31-5 in that span. He is a huge part of the team, but he does not do it alone. Chris Henderson and Cody Bytner will look to be the feature back. They must replace the ever dangerous Joey Vodopevic.  Corey Brown will look to emerge as the top pass catcher for Ferens.  The defense for Penns Manor did a fine job in 2011.Hendersen,Ferens and Steven Dumm are leaders and play makers for that side of the ball.  Penns Manor has the big target on their backs this season. They are expected to be contenders for the District and will not sneak up on anybody this year. The regular season match-up with Ligoneir Valley in Clymer on October, 12 will say a lot about this team.  (Make sure to catch the game on the D6 Sports Network)

2. Ligoneir Valley (8-3)
KEY Players-Ryan Torrance (RB) Stuart Urch (NT) Micah Tennant (OT)
The Ligoneir Valley Rams have enjoyed a great stretch of late. They have won 24 games the past three seasons and have been near the top of the Heritage every year. The key to the success is the running game employed by Coach Roger Beitel. The Rams like to run the ball....a lot. They had 2 1,000 yard backs last season, and one is coming back. Ryan Torrance could be heading for a monster 2012 season. He will be the feature back and his speed makes him one of the most dangerous players in the league. The running game starts up front with a big line that has some guys coming back. Micah Tennant is a giant presence up front with his 6-6 300 pound frame.  The Rams do not have a Quarterback settled yet, but Patrick Waugh and Scott Fennell are in the running.  LV's defense has some key players back, Ryan Torrance was the team's leading tackler last season and should be a leader on that side of the ball also. Ligoneir has some tough non-conference games with a trip to Windber and Bald Eagle will come to Weller Field. They will be tested and should compete for a AA playoff berth yet again. The race with Penns Manor for conference supremacy will be fun to watch.

3. Northern Cambria (5-6)
KEY Players-Jeff Hogan (QB) Nate Zachesky (RB) Adam Polites (WR)
Northern Cambria did not have a great 2011 season, but it brought a playoff berth. The 2012 campaign should be much better. The Colts return their Quarterback in Jeff Hogan. He should have a better passing threat this season and it could be a real asset for this team.  Nate Zachesky rushed for 652 yards in 2011 and should have an even better season as the featured back in 2012. Adam Polites is poised to have a big year as a play maker for this offense. NC returns their five biggest kids on the roster from last season, so size and offensive line should be a strength as well.Adam Polites and Alex Atkins will lead the defense. Atkins is a big 6-3 Linebacker that is a tackling machine. Polites is a ball hawk in the secondary.  The Colts have things coming together nicely. The return nearly everyone from 2011, and should make some vast improvements. They open up with Penns Manor, and it should be a good barometer for the season.

4. Marion Center (7-4)
KEY Players-Brodey Thompson (RB) Justin Tonkin (LB) Noah Hoover (RB)
Marion Center loses almost all of their key players from 2011, but the usually steady program should be able to find its footing. Brodey Thompson is the one player back that can carry this team. He rushed for 643 yards and 7 scores and caught 20 balls for 452 yards and 3 scores. His versatility and play-making knack will be huge for the Stingers.  Marion Center is losing plenty of seniors, so new kids will need to step up and play. Justin Tonkin will anchor the defense. Size will certainly be an issue for this squad. They lose most of their interior players. MC will fight for another "A" playoff berth this year, and it will be behind the skills of Brodey Thompson.

5. Purchase Line (1-7)
KEY Players-Luke Stolitza (QB) Joey Huey (RB) Shane Patrick (OL)
Purchase Line is 1-25 over the last three seasons, but I see improvement coming.  They have a senior class that has grown together and they are ready to make a positive step towards a winning season.  Luke Stolitza is a veteran QB and could be the league's best after Danny Ferens.  Joey Huey is a good solid back that has also been a starter since his sophomore season. He could provide big numbers for the Dragons this season. The success on offense will start up front with the massive offensive line employed by the Dragons. Shane Patrick and Joe Price will anchor both lines. The Dragons lost three games by a touchdown or less in 2011, Purchase Line will have a better chance to finish games this time around.

6. United (4-5)
KEY Players-Trevor Holupka (RB) Ben Mountan (OL) Doug Lavis (RB)
United is a strong program, but they are on a rebuilding path. They lose plenty of key players including Army recruit, Stephen Moreau and Running Back, Dom Chero. The Lions will press on with some new faces leading the way. The running game will be handled by Seniors, Doug Lavis and Trevor Holupka. Tyler Mack will also see some touches out of the backfield. The offensive line will be inexperienced and undersized, but big Ben Mountan will be counted on for leadership.Chuckie Hropvich should take the reigns of Quarterback this season, but Blake Brendlinger is also capable.  The Lions have plenty of holes, but they are well coached and can overcome these struggles. It will be tough for United to grasp a "A" playoff berth, but they can certainly find their way to a .500 season.

7. Homer Center (0-9)
KEY Players-Aaron Berezansky (QB) John Grozanick (RB) Mike Newhouse (LB)
Homer Center suffered a 0-9 season in 2011, but the positive out of that is only four seniors graduated. That was a very young team last season, and the year of experience should help the entire team this season. Aaron Berazansky was just a Freshmen playing QB last season, he should make an improvement this season.  The running back tandem of John Grozanick and Mike Newhouse should help take the pressure off of Berezansky.  They are experienced and will be valuable in the passing game as well. The apparent weaknesses is the lack of size up front. They have some experience, but could be undersized facing some bigger teams.  The offense has some play makers and they can steal some wins this season.  They will need a big improvement to contend for a playoff berth.

8. Blairsville (7-4)
KEY Players-Scott Thompson (QB) Noah Tarr (DB) Lucas Palmer (RB)
Blairsville losses 21 seniors from last year's playoff team. They will dress a combined 20 Freshmen and Sophomores this season and the youth movement is in full effect.  The offensive line will have some size, but 3 of the 4 biggest kids on the team are Freshmen. There will be inexperience all across the board. Scott Thompson appears to be the favorite to be the new Quarterback. The 6-2 Sophomore has good size and could develop nicely for the Bobcats. The Running game will feature Noah Tarr and Lucas Palmer. Tarr and Palmer will likely be main pieces on defense as well. Blairsville is in a rebuilding season, but they have a very bright future ahead. In small classification football, the Freshmen and Sophomores gaining experience pays dividends to the future.

9. Saltsburg (4-6)
KEY Players-Brody Beida (RB) Devin Morris (WR) Tyler Bendis (OL)
Saltsburg is coming off a pretty solid season. They have the potential to move up higher on the list.  Brody Beida is one of the better backs in the league. He will say a lot about the success of this team.  The QB situation sees Cody Stewart and Tyler Frassenei as the two competitors.  Sam Frassenei and Lucas Mowry are two solid play makers that will see touches on offense.Steve Richards will be returning to his Tight End spot. The line loses some key players, but Tyler Bendis and Bryce Zimmerman bring leadership. Saltsburg can win a few games this season. They need some guys to step up on defense as that was a cause for concern in 2011.

All in Good Time.

The trade deadline is ten days away. The likelihood of the Pirates making the blockbuster deal in the next five minutes isn't that high.  The Pirates have no leverage at this point, the sellers do. They can hold out and wait until one hour before the trade deadline, because frankly that is how it works. The Pirates almost assuredly need to make a move, and they will. The management understands the need of making an attempt this season. They need to prove to the fan base they will make a move to win. The much scrutinized era of Bob Nutting's ownership could take a HUGE step in the right direction. The Pittsburgh fan base is starving for a winner, and they are not far away. The Pirates are 12 games above .500, they are looking to be in a neck and neck race with the Cincinnati Reds for the remainder of the season. These are unheard of realities for Pittsburgh baseball. The Pirates are in the thick of playoff contention and may be one or two pieces away from reaching the postseason.
The Deadline is unpredictable, and it would not be fair to anyone for me to predict who they will get.  In an age of Twitter and trying to break the story first, the Pirates are reportedly "in" on everybody. Seriously, the Pirates are supposedly scouting every single player that could potentially available on July 31. Rightfully so, I must add. The Pirates are over-achievers any way you look at it. There is nothing wrong with it either. They do not have the middle of the order of the Cincinnati Reds. They do not have the World Series experience of the St. Louis Cardinals.  It is what it is. The Pirates are playing well with the same guys they have lost with in the past. It is remarkable what they have done, and I do believe it will change the culture for years to come. They need a bat and they need a starting pitcher, plain and simple. The offense has been tremendous since April ended, but it still can have days where the bats go completely silent.  The Pirates have McCutchen, and his burden is higher than any other player in Baseball.  Neil Walker is streaky, and the Pirates have committed to Pedro Alvarez's poor average in return for his Home Runs.  I am fine with all of that. They need a Left Fielder. Alex Presley is a guy you root for, but his progress is stagnant. He is just an average, speedy outfielder with a rather poor bat.  Jose Tabata will not be right for any sort of meaningful games in August. What does that leave you?  Drew Sutton?  Please No.  Gorkys Hernandez, Pretty, pretty please NO.  They could turn to Starling Marte, the prized AAA prospect. OR they could trade him for Justin Upton or Henter Pence, or Carlos Quienten. At this point, I'd rather have Pence and Upton over Marte. Proven MLB players under contract after this season. The Pirates also need a starting pitcher. AJ Burnett and James McDonald have been great, but in need of some help. Correia has pitched well of late, but could certainly be upgraded.  Bedard is a veteran that started well, but has been awful lately.  They would not mind getting somebody better, though. Jeff Karstens will be around for the duration, I do believe that.  The Pirates can try and make the giant splash with a Cliff Lee,Zach Greinke, or even sell the farm for Felix Hernandez. Those would certainly help the playoff push, but risky long term. I would like a Ryan Dempster if available and the price is right. James Shields from Tampa would be a nice fit.
The Trade Deadline is unpredictable. Anything can happen the next ten days. The columns and articles screaming for the Pirates to make an addition have been heard loud and clear. They can stop now. The article is not going to make Neal Huntingdon act faster. This is a process, it takes time. The Bucs have often been on the other end of this situation, it is fairly new to be a buyer.  Everything needs to play out still, and the Pirates will start getting serious soon.  The report is that Huntingdon is low balling teams, and frankly that is fine. Why not try and get stuff cheap? The offers will be more realistic as each day passes. The Pirates have a healthy farm system and Gerrit Cole is the only player I would absolutely not trade. Anyone else is fair game in my eyes. Taillon, Heredia,Marte, Hansen,Bell....You name it, I'd rather see an attempt at winning this year than banking on a bunch of "A" prospects down the line. This could be the season, play like it is.

ICC Football Preview 2012.

The ICC is next up on our Summer conference previews. The ICC is a little out of my comfort zone, so I did have to use some outside help for this preview, and their analysis is very much appreciated.  The ICC is a league that encompasses both Districts 5 and 6. There are plenty of teams that will be competing for different championships and the league is wide open.  The key to this league, much like any High School Football league, is the turnover. There are new faces all around. Both new players and coaches alike would like to leave their mark on the 2012 season. It should be another good year, and another good race in the ICC.

GOLD

1. Bellwood-Antis (10-2)
KEY Players-Casey Gray (RB) Tyler Campbell (LB) Ian O'Shea (TE)
Bellwood-Antis is the marquee program for the ICC, and this year should not be any different. They will enter the season as the favorites again, and will be among the best teams in the District.  The offense returns two key runners, and they could form a lethal duo.  Casey Gray did a little bit of everything as a Sophomore, and this year he will do a little bit more. He is set for a big year, and could be the best player in the league. Gray's running mate, Tyler Campbell could also be set for a big offensive year.  The passing offense returns some of their key cogs as well. Ian O'Shea at Tight End, Cameron Worthing at receiver, and Gray out of the backfield are all reliable targets.  Seth Worthing is in line to be the next quarterback for Coach John Hayes.  The defensive unit was dominant at times last year, before being exposed by Penns Manor. The will have revenge on their minds Tyler Campbell,Ian O'Shea, and Casey Gray also have a strong defensive presence on this team as well.  This team can be really good. They are capable of running through the ICC, but have two very difficult non conference games in Tyrone and Richland. Those will be great tests and should help their playoff push.

2. Northern Bedford (8-3)
KEY Players-Zach Pressel (WR) Tayler Pressel (TE) Caleb Ebersole (FB)
The Northern Bedford Panthers will be transitioning into a new era on offense, but it could be a smooth one.  The offense relied heavily on the play of Matt Sollenberger and Logan Fluke, but they have a new group ready to step in.  The offense will have a strong core of receivers lead by Tight End, Tayler Pressel. Tayler will be joined by his twin brother, Zach and Junior Kyler Diehl. All three kids are 6-3 or better and will be match up nightmares for opposing secondaries.  The problem will be, Who will get them the ball? Blake Over will step in and get the chance. Caleb Ebersole and Connor Kagarise will lead the running game.  NBC always puts out a solid defensive effort, and this year should be no different.  Tayler Pressel will be the main man on that side of the ball as well. NBC opens with Glendale and good be a big measuring point for the entire conference's pecking order.  The Pnathers should also play a factor into the District 5 race.

3. Southern Huntingdon (3-6)
KEY Players-Chad Waite (RB) Arron Thomas (OL) Zach Simmerson (S)
Southern Huntingdon is losing plenty from the 2011 squad, but leave some promising players.  The Southern Huntingdon Rockets are coming off a 3-6 campaign, but there is a belief they could still improve. SH will win some games with their offensive line. They have a huge presence up front in senior, Arron Thomas. Thomas stands at a massive and imposing 6-7 335 frame. He will lead the attack up front. Chad Waite is believed to be the star of the offense and could have a breakout season.  There will be plenty of new faces in some key areas, so inexperience will hurt initially.  The Rockets have a favorable enough schedule that a AA playoff berth is not far out of reach.

4. Everett (1-9)
KEY Players-Kyle Droz (QB) Colton Mearkle (DB) Barkley Rhoat (SR)
The Everett Warriors are ready to usher in a new coach, and there could be success along the way. The cupboard is not bare after last year, and there are plenty of experienced players left in the fold. The offensive line looks to be a strength as four of five starters are back. The unit will be led Phil Cummings and Justin Weist.  The QB spot will, be manned by Kyle Droze, a returnee from last season.  Barkley Rhoat, Zach Jays, and Kyle Shearer are all talented skilled players and should see the bulk of the carries on offense. Colton Mearkle returns to lead the defensive unit that should be improved from last season.  Everett will now compete in AA and they have a chance at a District Title. The new coach should breath life into a program that needs it.

5. Mt. Union (4-6)
KEY Players-Dylan Smith (LB) Willie Miner (QB) Kord Aurand (WR)
Mt. Union could be in for a long season. The Trojans lose almost all of their primary players from 2011, and a young group will take over.  Willie Miner appears to be in line to take the Quarterback position.  Greg Reeder and Mike Smith will man the backfield and should each see carries. Kord Aurand will be a player in the receiving game.  The Trojans lose most of their line, and they will be a little undersized up front.  Mt. Union needs a nice influx of Sophomores to the team that can contribute right away. If that happens, the Trojans could move up the charts.

6. West Branch (5-5)
KEY Players-Chad Speigle (RB) Morgan Slepack (DT) Parker Emigh (K)
West Branch listed 23 kids on their roster, and 12 of them have since graduated. Needless to say the numbers will be a factor with this team.  They return a really good player from their surprising 2011 squad, and that is Chad Speigle. He will lead the team in rushing and will be among the best players in the conference.  Speigle may be moved to QB out of need, but either way will be a factor.  Morgan Slepack is the top returnee on the line, and he is the biggest player on the team. he will be counted on to anchor both lines.  The kicking game returns Parker Emigh.  Special teams is not often talked about, but the kid nailed 6 field goals last year and could be a good weapon for the team this season.  Depending on the roster turnout, this team could move up. Football is a lot about depth, and the Warriors do not have it right now.

SILVER

1. Glendale (6-4)
KEY Players-Damon Braniff (RB) Gary Witherow (QB) Doug Twigg(WR)
The Glendale Vikings only lose four seniors from last year's 6-4 team. The hope is that the experience returning will take Glendale to the next level.  They have the skilled players to make a run at Bellwood, but do they have the depth to compete? Damon Braniff is the most accomplished back returning to the conference, and could be set for another big season.  Braniff averaged 5 yards a carry last season, and scored 13 touchdowns. His worth to this squad can not be measured. The offense has a nice passing threat, and it could improve on last year. Gary Witherow enter his second season as the starter at QB.  His favorite target, Doug Twigg is also back.  Glendale has some size, but only 22 players returning from last year's team. Depth will definitely be an issue, but if they can remain healthy, they have a shot.

2. Tussey Mountain (3-6)
KEY Players-Eric Husick (QB)  Mitchell Corbin (RB) Jarred Rhodes (DE)
Tussey Mountain is looking for a bounce back year after a tough 2011. The pieces are in place for that bounce to happen. Eric Husick is back to lead the offense and his experience should help him.  The running game will be manned by the duo of Mitchell Corbin and Tyler Husick.  Corbin has the ability to catch passes out of the backfield and should be the Titans' biggest offensive weapon.   The line will be completely in tact from last season and should pave the way for a successful 2012 campaign. The defense will be led by Jarred Rhodes, who posted seven sacks last season.  The Titans seem ready to take a step towards the playoffs, and could find their way into the District 5 race.

3. Claysburg-Kimmel (4-6)
KEY Players-Zach Helsel (RB) Devin Weyandt (DE) Trey Claar (QB)
Claysburg-Kimmel is looking for its first winning season since 2004. The Bulldogs may be ready to take the next step. The team will be built around star tailback, Zach Helsel.  Helsel will be one of the league's premiere rushers and showcase players.  The offense will turn over the reigns to Trey Claar at QB. He will have 6-3 Devin Weyandt as his primary target. They return their five biggest players on the line, so they will be one of the bigger teams in the league. The defense relies heavily on Weyandt and Claar and they will not disappoint.

4. Juniata Valley (7-3)
KEY Players-Caleb Taylor (QB) Brett Grissinger (RB) Ian Hawn (DE)
Juniata Valley is about to go through some turnover. They Hornets have had some great runs of late, but will be missing some key names. JV still brings back some skilled players. Caleb Taylor did a solid job at QB as a Sophomore, and he should only get better. Brett Grissinger was only the third option last season, but mustered 380 yards and 4 touchdowns. He will be the featured back this time, and should put together a nice season. Size will be the team's biggest issue. They are not very big up front. They have had some successful offenses recently and they should still be able to make plays. There is the worry that they could be worn down throughout the season.  Kris Gardner and Ian Hawn are two defensive standouts that will be focal points this season.  Juniata Valley has their work cut out for themselves if they wish to earn a playoff berth, but it is certainly doable.

5. Moshannon Valley (8-4)
KEY Players-James Stodart (TE) Austin Mital (OL) Kent Stewart (S)
All the key pieces of the 8-4 2011 campaign are gone. There will be plenty of new faces in key places. The way those players respond could be the difference in this team finishing anywhere from 2nd to 6th place in this division, it is a large unknown. Some of the known commodities are good ones.  James Stodart is big target at Tight End and will be one of the league's best. Tanner Dipko and Justin Kitko will be in the battle for the QB race.  The line will be fronted by Austin Mital and the group returns a number of key players.  The running back position is unknown, Caleb Campbell could be the answer.  Kent Stewart made plenty of tackles from his Safety position last season, and will be expected to do the same this year.  The Black Knights could have a very big year, all depends on how the new players respond. This is a good program, and a proud one. They will muster up some wins.

6. Williamsburg (1-9)
KEY Players-Alan Shanholtz (RB)  Sean McCauley (DT) Austin McMonagle (QB)
The Williamsburg Pirates could be the surprise of the season.  They have strong skilled position players across the board and could make some unexpected noise within the league. The QB battle will be between Austin McMonagle and Jed Dishong.  McMonagle may win the battle because Dishong is a pass catching threat. Quinton Snyder will also be a threat in the passing game.  Alan Shanholtz is a solid back and will be a big time part of the Williamsburg offense. He has great hands as well, and could really stretch defenses. Williamsburg is a tiny school, and the numbers are not always there. The Pirates will be battling the numbers game all year long.  They do have some pretty good size coming back, but little depth behind them. If the line holds up, these playmakers can win them some games.  The playoffs are a tough goal to reach, especially now they are reduced to eight teams.

D6 Sports Network: 2012 Districts Five & Six Football Outlook.

D6 A
The Front-runners

Danny Ferens
-Penns Manor-The Penns Manor Comets are the defending champions and certainly will be players again in 2012. The team starts with one guy and that is Danny Ferens. The Quarterback will be going into his fourth season as the starter. Last year, Ferens rushed for 2,129 and 27 touchdowns, and still threw for 629 yards and an additional 11 touchdowns.  He is the focal point and will carry Penns Manor as he possibly can.   The Comets must be able to find a replacement for Joey Vodopevic as he helped take on a good portion of the rushing load. Chris Henderson and Corey Brown will be the primary receiving targets for Ferens. The Comets do not have a ton of size, but the athletic play of Danny Ferens will give the offense plenty of time to let plays develop.  The 2012 trophy is Penns Manor's to lose. They have the district's best player, and will be a tough out for anyone. Penns Manor will be the key player in the Heritage Conference as well.
KEY GAME- Ligoneir Valley 10/12

Casey Gray
-Bellwood-Antis-Bellwood-Antis is always just one of those teams. They can lose plenty of stars from a previous year and still be in the thick of the race. Bellwood loses their Quarterback, Running Back, and some key defensive standouts. New stars are about to emerge. Casey Gray is a junior and is threat as a running back or receiver. He will be the team's star back this season and will not disappoint. Seth Worthing will be looking to take on the Quarterback position. Cameron Worthing and Ian O'Shea are top targets for whoever will be the Quarterback.  The Blue Devils are always a factor come playoff time. Coach John Hayes is one of the more revered coaches in this area, and it is for the way his teams compete year after year.  Bellwood always seems to be the top dog in the ICC, and they should be the front runners for that crown again.
KEY GAME-Tyrone 8/31

Jordan Spangler
-Bishop McCort-Bishop McCort will once again be a key factor in the District Six "A" Championship race.  The Crimson Crushers lose many of their key play makers from 2011, but they won't be short on offensive firepower.  Dustin Belskey and Wyatt Jackson will be the main backs in the offense. Jordan Spangler and Luke DiFrancesco will find themselves being the top receiving targets for whoever wins the Quarterback battle. The defense must replace some size and speed, but again some young players are ready to step up.  The Crushers will play a factor in the tough LHAC, and have a chance to win the league. The Crushers have won plenty District Titles of late, and will look to get back in top in 2012.
KEY GAME-@ Richland 9/28

Teams to Watch
Glendale-The Vikings return Gary Witherow at QB and Damon Braniff at RB and they could make a splash in the ICC.  Depth will be the biggest issue, but they can certainly make some noise.

Northern Cambria-The Colts have Jeff Hogan at QB and Nate Zachesky will takeover the Running Back duties. They will be a tough out in the Heritage and should make an improvement on last year's 5-6 record.

Portage-The Mustangs will look to rebound from an uncharacteristic below .500 season in 2011. Evan Price will be the name to watch as he will be the featured back.  Portage can be a player in the WestPac.

D6 AA
The Front-runners

Matt Shaffer
-Richland-Richland went to the title game last season and came up empty. The 2012 campaign looks like it could be Richland's year. They have the chance to have a potent offense led by Matt Shaffer. The offense has weapons all over the field. Kyle Flick will be back and could be the most talented receiver in the district. The offense should have a good running attack with Tanner Solarczyk. The line is in place on both sides of the ball. This team has all the makings of being the front runner for the District. They will go in as the favorite in the LHAC as well. They need to prove they can without John Rizzo, but I believe they can.
KEY GAME-@ Penn Cambria 10/19

Mac Behe
-Penn Cambria-The Penn Cambria Panthers will look to build on a solid 2011 campaign. The Panthers are led by a strong and experienced senior class. The offense will run on the running game of Mac Behe and Devin Lawhead.  Nathan Keagy and James Mardula are solid offensive threats in the passing game and will help out a new starting quarterback. Penn Cambria does not have a huge team, but they are physical.  Behe was an all state pick last year on defense and will set the tone this season for the Panther defense.  This team is hungry for some playoff success and it could be their year to make it to Mansion Park.
KEY GAME-@ Forest Hills 10/12

Shawn Dell
-Forest Hills-The Forest Hills Rangers are always in contention, and 2012 should be no different.  Jared Shope is one of the most dangerous players in the district and is poised for a big season.  The offense has Shawn Dell to carry the work load, and a young sophomore Shareef Blough to spread the field.  They have yet to find a Quarterback, but the rest of the offense should make it a seemless transition. There is a large fallout from 2011, but they have a good group of kids that will rise to the occassion. Don Bailey is a great coach, and his teams always respond to losing star players.
KEY GAME-Penn Cambria 10/12

Teams to Watch
-Tyrone-Tyrone must replace a lot of key players from last year's state runner up team. They do, but it may take them a while to reach their stride. Look for Charles Wilson to have a big year.

-Ligonier-Ryan Torrance will be big at Running Back and could have a monster season. LV will be in a grudge match with Penns Manor for the Heritage Title.

-Cambria Heights-This team could be for real. They return all of their skilled players and they may make a playoff push.

D5 A
The Front-runners

Tony Straiser
-North Star-The North Star Cougars are about as consistent as anyone in District Five these days, and they will be the favorites as they look to defend their title. Tony Straiser is perhaps the best athlete and player in the entire district.  He will play a huge factor in North Star's success.  Thomas Miller turned out to be a reliable back last season as a sophomore, and he will be counted on to do the same this year.  Brantley Rice will get the tough job of replacing Max Straiser at QB. The Cougars have the talent to win the WestPac and District Five, and they are the favorites in both.
KEY GAME-@ Conemaugh Township 11/2

-Berlin-Berlin could be the team that will go toe to toe with North Star for the WestPac and District Championships.  They have the experience and depth to make a good postseason run. Drew Glotfelty will be the featured back, and he could be the best back in the district. He will have a big year and could lead the Mounties to a lot of wins. His versatility makes him a threat as a receiver as well.  Berlin must solidify the Quarterback position. Assuming they do, Berlin can really challenge North Star for supremacy in the District.
KEY GAME-North Star 9/28

Teams to Watch
-Windber-The Ramblers lose a ton from last season, but they always find a way. There will be a new crop of kids ready to carry the tradition.

-Conemaugh Township-The will have a young group, but they could have a solid defense. They may need a week or two to get rolling.

D5 AA
Only a three team race, but all three teams have a chance. The top two teams will battle it out after the regular season to move on to the State playoffs.

-Bedford-The Bisons may have the best team in the group, but also play the toughest schedule. Bedford plays in the difficult LHAC and will face Penn Cambria,Richland,Bishop McCort, and Johnstown throughout the season.  Aaron Henry is a good back, and they have some unproven pieces. Bedford could string together a 5-5 regular season if everything falls in place right.

-Chestnut Ridge-Chestnut Ridge has a difficult schedule in terms of travel. The strength of that schedule is mostly unknown.  Ridge will play teams from Maryland,Pittsburgh, and Harrisburg to complete their ten game schedule. Ridge must replace their superstar player, Brad Hengst. They have good size and that will be a team strength.

-Everett-The Warriors of Everett may play the easiest schedule of the three teams, but will they take advantage? Everett posted a disappointing 1-9 season in 2011, and they will look to rebound. The Maxpreps for Everett is not maintained, so it is difficult to predict how they will do. Everett lost some close games last season, and they could maybe steal a few in the ICC.

D5/6 AAA
Dsitrict Six was unable to play a District Championship game last year with Bellefonte opting not to play Johnstown in the Title.  Somerset rejoins the AAA ranks after a brief hiatus and they at least give the area three AAA teams. The local representative will form a Sub region with the City League and District 9.

-Johnstown-The Trojans will likely be the most talented team, despite losing so much. The strength of the Trojans will be their size. The offensive line of Michael Brooks and Nick Subich will pave the wave for some skilled, yet unproven skilled players. Johnstown lost so much, but the talent is there for them to compete for the LHAC and the sub-region's titles.

-Somerset-Somerset is certainly a team on the rise. Tanner Stull is a mobile QB with plenty of upside. They need to replace some size up front, but Stull should win them some games.  Somerset can contend for an above .500 season. They competed last year, but fell short on some tight games. Somerset should be able to finish some more games this year.

-Bellefonte-The Raiders are looking to bounce back from a 1-9 season in 2011. It will be tough to break through in the ultra competitive MAC league. They do not maintain a Maxpreps, but they suffered plenty of lopsided loses. The offense must improve to give them a chance in 2012.

Mark Appel......

Through all the All Star stuff, the first place stuff, and the trade deadline stuff.....There is still the issue of signing of first round pick, Mark Appel.  The deadline in which to sign a first round pick is Friday.  The report came out yesterday that Appel was leaning towards returning to Stanford for his Senior season.  I do not think its fair to be critical of a guy returning to play with his college teammates and all that. That is a special experience.  Although it appears he is returning to school for all the wrong reasons.  Appel and his representative, Scott Boras do not seem too pleased with his slotted 8th pick money of 2.9 million.  The Pirates saved enough money on other selections to offer Appel closer to 3.8 million.  The report could be a ploy by Boras to try to squeeze out more money from the Pirates. He may ultimately sign when the deadline rolls around later this week, but things now are unclear.
The issue of not signing the first round pick would usually be an absolute nightmare for Pirate management.  The on field team has people forgetting about the draft and signing Appel.  I think best case scenario is that he does in fact sign. The Pirates, or any team for that matter, could always use a projected top of the rotation starter.  Appel being in the fold would also make trading a guy like Taillon a little more tolerable.  The Pirates could be lining up to take on making a big trade in the coming weeks and their pitching depth could be the asking price to seal the deal. Appel and the Pirates both stand plenty to gain by him signing. Appel gets 3.8 million and the financial security. The Pirates add another top end pitching prospect and add more depth to their loaded system. It is a win-win for everyone. If Appel does not sign, here is what happens for both parties.  Appel will return for Stanford and throw away a lot of money. He will risk and try to be picked in the first seven picks of next year's draft in hopes of getting more money. The Pirates will receive the 9th pick in the draft no matter what in compensation for losing Appel. The Pirates will have their normal pick as well. That actually seems pretty pretty good to have two picks in next year's draft as it is expected to be better.  The Pirates are not the only team in fear of losing their first round pick as Kevin Gausman of the Orioles may return to LSU.  These guys are throwing a lot of money away. The next few days will be interesting.

2nd Half Playing Time.

The Pirates are 48-37 heading into the All Star Break. They sit one game above the Cincinnati Reds in the National League Central standings. The Bucs hold the second best record in the National League. So as the saying goes, "If it ain't broke....." Well I am not here to say I could do a better job than Clint Hurdle (Manager of the Year to date IMO) because he has this team playing out of this world. The reality is that the Pirates have a scorching hot offense of late, and it is due to the contributions from everyone. They still rank in the bottom third in Baseball in most offensive categories. They have three firm everyday starters, which is absurd for a first place ballclub. We all know McCutchen is locked in at Center Field. Alvarez and Walker are both red hot and are holding down third and second base without any worries. That leaves us with plenty of other questions. The recent trade rumors have to have any Pirate's fan imagination giddy. Justin Upton, Cole Hamels, Felix Hernandez, and Chase Headley and so on and so forth.  The Pirates are going to add some things, but it is way too early to say who it will be. The next two weeks will say a lot about who the Pirates go after. Here are some interesting playing time battles going into the second half.

Catcher-The catching position in Pittsburgh is actually really stable.  Rod Barajas has been hitting very well and is owed a lot of credit for the pitching staff's improvement.  He is a major league veteran and his impact can not be totally measured by on field performance.  He is important, and I think will receive 70% of the starts moving forward.  Michael McKenry has proven to be a more than adequate backup. Both Catchers have plenty of pop and they have both been hitting well since June. This is the Pirates 7 hitter, and I think it is in good hands with these guys.

First Base-I think this comes down to the platoon situation again. Garrett Jones and Casey McGehee have both been hot. The struggles of Jose Tabata and Alex Presley have allowed Jones to steal some starts in right. The pending trades and possibly the call up of Starling Marte will take away the Jones in RF option.  This may be a straight righty-lefty platoon. Jones has been awful against Lefty pitching all year, but his hot bat against right handed pitching has made him a legitimate third power threat for the Pirates.  Jones needs to play a lot, and I do not see any way around it.  McGehee has been hot of late, but does not have the same power threat as Jones.  These guys are both veterans and can handle the roles they will be reduced to after the deadline.  I'm guessing 65-35 moving forward in favor of Jones.

Shortstop-The Shortstop situation is bleak. The Pirates have mediocre guys like Josh Harrison, Jordy Mercer, and Chase d'Arnaud as options behind incumbent starter, Clint Barmes. Barmes has been hugging the Mendoza line all season long, and sits at .204 going into the break. You have to look at the numbers a little deeper. He had an awful April and May, but hit .250 in the month of June. That is essentially what Clint Barmes is, a .250 hitter. He has been playing a good shortstop, and has gone out and done his job there everyday.  He may not be popular, but the internal alternatives are worse. The trade market for Shortstops is also weak.  Clint will be the 8 hitter and will play nearly 90% of the time the next 3 months.

Left Field-The Pirates have no sure things.  Drew Sutton is hitting like a madman since being acquired and deserves a chance for the time being.  The long haul has to be better than Drew Sutton, we should all know this.  Alex Presley is a speedy spark plug, but is a very mediocre hitter. His speed and hustle keeps him around the lineup.  He will be back and should be a solid 4th outfielder and will be a valuable commodity going forward.  Jose Tabata's issues may not get resolved this season. He could be the odd man out as things go forward. It is a shame that he has fallen off, but he is a liability in the lineup.

Right Field-Starling Marte could be on his way very soon. He is not a giant power hitter, but has McCutchen-like tools. He is not anywhere as near the player as McCutchen, just similar type of style. He could be the starting right fielder for years to come.  Garrett Jones will see time here in the first two weeks before the deadline, and after that it is anybody's guess. Will the Bucs make a splash at the trade deadline? Will it be a big time outfielder?  It just may happen. The deadline affects Presley,Tabata,Jones,Marte, and Sutton. This one will be too early to tell.

3-4-5th starting pitchers-Jeff Karstens,Kevin Correia, and Erik Bedard will continue to be in the rotation, but for how long?  Correia is very shaky and needs to show more consistency to stay around.  Bedard started off great, but has been free falling since.  He may not be 100% healthy and the break can do him well.  He has the best talent of these three pitchers.   Jeff Karstens will be here for the long haul, assuming no injuries.  Karstens is a crafty pitcher that gets the job done.  The Pirates have Brad Lincoln waiting in the wings, and three AAA left handers that are waiting in the wings.  Justin Wilson,Rudy Owens, and Jeff Locke can either be in Pittsburgh, or trade bait.  The Pirates can go out and get another ace type and sure things up, or hope these guys turn it around.  I hope Bedard can turn it around, a lefty is a nice commodity.

Closer-Trade the Hammer, or not?   Jason Grilli and Juan Cruz have been great setup men, and could assume the role as closer if the Pirates are so inclined to trade Hanrahan.  I say the Hammer stays.  He is the Pirates best relief pitcher and is very reliable.  If it came down to this....mid-September in a must win game and a one run lead in the 9th, I want Hanrahan in there over Grilli every time.  Hanrahan needs to be a part of this team going forward, he would be missed a lot more than people realize.

Acknowledgments & Shout Outs

The 20 Greatest teams of the 2000's was not an easy project. It was a random idea I came up with to help pass the time in the Summer, and maybe add some talk and banter for the dull football-less Summer. I think the list has accomplished just that.  I understand people may view things differently than I did. I certainly missed some teams basically for lack of knowledge.  I tried to gather opinions and input from all, but the fact of the matter is, I did not know how good some of the teams were.  I tried to be objective and fair as well. 19 of the 20 teams on this list won a championship. They can stake their claim to be near the top of the list just as much as anyone. I tried my best to keep this thing interesting and diverse.  So, Thank You. Thank You for the input and criticism from all that read these breakdowns. I was certainly surprised at the talk it stirred.

First off, Thanks to the D6 Sports Network  (Dan & Brad) for all the help and insight you provided to the making of the list. Your words are always trusted and respected.

Thanks to Scott Lewis and Ross Carpenter for their knowledge of Forest Hills Football and other teams from the area. They definitely made some big contributions when the internet could not help me.

Thanks to Eaglealum of Bleachercoaches for all the facts and personal opinions about Tyrone Football.  Tyrone is such a great Football community and they had three of their teams crack the top ten. All worthy of being near the top.

Thanks to Doug Keklak of Trojan nation for all the help on the Johnstown Football teams. Doug knows his JHS athletics unlike anyone else. His site is a great read for any Football fan, be sure to check it out.

Also I'd like to shout out to some teams that did not crack the Top 20.

-2003 Huntingdon.  Well of anyone, they may be the largest snub. Huntingdon was 11-1 and defeated Johnstown with LaRod by a 9-6 margin. They lost in the state playoffs early, but dominated everyone else on their schedule.

-2002 Bishop Carroll. They essentially fell victims to having the '01 and '03 teams around them.  BC was 12-2 and lost to WPIAL power, Rochester 21-19 at states.

-2009 Bellwood-Antis.  Bellwood gave Bishop McCort all they could handle in the District Title. The Blue Devils blew out arch-rival, Tyrone in Week 1. They finished the season 11-1

-2008 Bishop McCort. This was essentially the 2009 State runner up team with some more weapons. They had a tougher road than '09 basically.

-2008 Central. The Dragons of Central posted a great season in 2008. Led by the all everything Lucas Runk, they won District Six and fell to Wilmington in states.

-2000 Westmont. This team ran through the LHAC 9-0, earning the top seed in the district before falling to Tyrone in the second round 14-0.  Regarded as the best Westmont team of the 2000's, no questions asked.

-2011 Penns Manor. The Comets had a dream season in 2011 that included a state final four berth.

D6 Sports Network Twenty Greatest Teams of the 2000's. #1

1. 2003 Bishop Carroll

The Scoop-The 2003 Bishop Carroll Huskies stand the tallest in our countdown of the twenty greatest teams of the 2000's. The Huskies compiled a 14-1 record and a state championship appearance. Bishop Carroll was led by a very good player and one of the best players on this list.  Todd Koenig was just a Junior but had an outstanding season and career for the Huskies. Koenig finished with 1,722 yards and 30 touchdowns in 2003. He was one of two 1,000 yard backs for BC.  Paul Forcellini was just a Sophomore, but it was evident he was a special player as he racked up 1,015 yards in the lethal BC running game. Eric Lashinsky was the Quarterback and run the wing-t about as well as it could be run.  The passing game was not anything great, but with a rushing attack as they had, it was not necessary. Bishop Carroll had a statement win over Forest Hills in week 2 and sailed into week six with a showdown against LaRod Stephens-Howling and Johnstown. The Huskies won the game by a score of 7-6. The offense exploded from there scoring 40+ points the next four weeks. BC sailed through District Six, including a 49-17 win over Northern Cambria in the Championship game. BC knocked off Clarion-Limestone and Springdale in the playoffs to set up a date with Southern Columbia in Hershey.  The Huskies held their own for a half, but SoCo dominated the third quarter to end the Huskies' hopes of a Title.

The Stars-Todd Koenig went on to play Football at Ohio University.  Koenig was a three year starter for the Bobcats and earned a tryout with the Cleveland Browns.  Paul Forcellini was just a Sophomore, but his career was something special.  Forcellini played ball at Bucknell. Doug Bodenschatz was a defensive force for Carroll. He was second in the state with 29 tackles for loss, and third with 19 sacks.  Landan Day, Dan Strong, and Kevin Westrick were all key players on the BC defense.

The Argument-Bishop Carroll's dominant regular season, and strong playoff showing earns them the nod at the top spot. They had a great running game, and a lights out defense.  Sometimes "A" teams get overlooked, but playing in the LHAC allowed them to play up all year long. Koenig was one of the better players the area has seen recently. His defensive prowess is as equally as recognized as his offense. Forcellini's talent as a Sophomore was evident and he played a big factor right away. This team had tons of talent and size. They pass the eye test, and the success test as well. At the end of the day, this team had what we were looking for.  The argument can be made for a number of teams. Tyrone, Bishop McCort,Forest Hills,Bellwod-Antis....the schools and teams can go on and on. The list was made for sparking some argument, and reminisce about some great teams and great players.
