Couch Potato's guide September 1st-4th.

Basically this weekly feature will be a guide to the Ten Best Football games each weekend on TV. This could be either college or Pro.  As a Pitt season ticket holder, I sometimes miss College Football Saturdays at home. But to me there is nothing better than kicking back and watching some games after a long week, and I'm here to tell you what games you should watch.

So here are the "can't miss" games of the week.

10. UNLV at Wisconsin Thursday 8:00 ESPN.
Well here it is everybody, Football is back.  This will be ESPN's official opening game.  UNLV isn't all that great, but the Badgers are primed up for a big run. Russell Wilson will make his debut at Camp Randall.  And how can you miss a tradition like this......

9. BYU at Ole Miss  Saturday 4:45 ESPN
BYU's first game as an independent sends them to SEC country. Ole Miss is not the marquee SEC school, but it will still be a challenge for BYU.  Hey its not like there will be anything better on at 4:45?  Right?

8. Tulsa at Oklahoma  Saturday 8:00 FX.
Football on FX?  Worth a shot I guess? Not that anyone will be watching this game with the other 8 o'clock games going on. I suppose if you are bored enough, and want to see Oklahoma put up 60 plus points, than this is the game for you.

7. Minnesota at USC Saturday 3:30 ABC
Well Minnesota basically has no chance, but its always fun watching USC play.  Who knows, maybe the Gophers can keep things interesting, but Barkley will lead the boys, and is a dark horse to be the number 1 overall pick in April's draft.

6. Marshall at WVU Sunday 3:30 ESPN.
Who doesn't like a good ole in-state rivalry to start the year?  Marshall gave the 'Eers quite a scare last year.   And Coach Dana Holgorsen will be making his West Virginia debut, and its the only game on to watch on Sunday.  Sounds like a perfect afternoon game to watch.

5. TCU at Baylor Friday 8:00 ESPN
Not the biggest fan of college Football on Friday nights, but if you are stuck by a tv than you will luck out this Friday. Baylor Quarterback, Robert Griffin III is worth watching by himself.  The guy is a freak, and if he played at Texas, he would be dubbed the next Vince Young and would be a Heisman front runner. Oh and TCU is always really, really good.

4. South Florida at Notre Dame Saturday 3:30 NBC.
This is an intriguing match up, and it should be a good one.  South Florida is one of the favorites to win the Big East, and Notre Dame has high expectations themselves.  Will the Irish be looking ahead to Michigan next week?  And Will South Florida be able to make noise in the state of Florida?  Keep an eye on the Bulls' QB BJ Daniels.  The guy will be running around all game long trying to make plays.

3. Miami at Maryland Monday 8:00 ESPN.
Well this should just be a must watch because we have no clue what Miami team will show up?  They will be dealing with suspensions and guys being kicked off the team after the offseason scandals.  Can anyone really say they are surprised the Hurricane players were being paid? Either way, Maryland will take a shot at the Canes on primetime.  It will be a big game in College Park.  Plus its a Monday Night, what else are you going to be watching?

2. Boise State vs. Georgia (Georgia Dome) Saturday 8:00 ESPN.
The Broncos again will be taking the spotlight on opening weekend, at another "neutral site."  I doubt you will see much Bronco blue in Atlanta this night.  Georgia may finally have a chance at an SEC Championship. and Quarterback Aaron Murray looks like a solid player.  Kellen Moore's Heisman hopes and Boise's title hopes begin here, and we can only hope they wear these helmets again.   These things are sick...

1. LSU vs. Oregon (Cowboys Stadium) Saturday 8:00 ABC.
This game is a Texas sized battle, no wonder they chose Dallas to host it.  The general assumption is that the SEC has the most speed in the country, well LSU will have a good look at a very fast Oregon team.  Darron Thomas and LaMichael James can take it to the house any play.  Certainly a great matchup for the tough LSU defense.  You can't go wrong with this game or the Boise State game. But the biggest question going into this game,  What uniforms will Oregon pull out?  Great way to kick off College Football.  Enjoy everybody.

LHAC Football Forecast Week 1.

   Bedford at Cambria HeightsFriday 9/2.

Heights enters the year without Vescovi under Center, but still have some offensive punch left. Ben Myers and Tyler Crawford should be able to provide an attack on the ground, until the new Quarterback gets his feet wet. Jarrod Lewis will be making his debut for the Highlanders as the new Head Coach, and he has a winnable game at hand.  Bedford's Kevin Steele enter his second year looking to improve on last year's 5-5 mark.  Marcus Shippey is easily one of the league's top players, but often finds himself doing a lot of the work.   If the supporting cast can help him out, it will make his job a lot easier and the wins should be more frequent.   I think Bedford will be better prepared with their coach already in place, and Shippey is good enough to win the game alone, and get Bedford off to a good start.
Bisons 31  Highlanders 16

Somerset at Penn Cambria. Friday 9/2

Somserset has a new coach, and a new attitude.  But will it translate into wins?  The Eagles will rely on junior play caller, Matt Flyte to make plays and lead the team.  A talented sophomore class will be coming up as well.  The Eagles should be turning the corner soon, and a win or two this year is not too much to ask.  Penn Cambria will have a powerful rushing attack, and will look to build off of last year's playoff berth.  Buck and Fuller will should be able to assert their experience and dominate the ground game.  Somerset will be better in years to come, but things have not changed in one season. Fetzer will have the Panthers ready to go, and their experience will outmatch Somerset.
Panthers 30 Golden Eagles 14

Westmont at Bishop Carroll  Friday 9/2
Bishop Carroll comes into this season with a lot of promise.  The past few offseasons, not much was expected of the Huskies. After a State semi final appearance, the bar of expectations has risen. Josh Barzdo will be back to lead the Husky offensive attack. He will need to provide more of passing threat, but he is dangerous on the ground.  A new back will need to emerge to replace Woo, and if that happens in game one, the Hilltoppers will be in trouble.  Westy has struggled over the years, and they are looking to turn the corner this year.  The hopes rely upon the running game.  Burnheimer and Intihar return to carry the team.  It remains to be seen if Glennon or Moran takes hold of the quarterback spot, so getting the running game going early will be key.  I think Carroll's playoff experience, and the fact that they should hold an advantage up front will carry this team to victory.
Huskies 35 Hilltoppers 13

Johnstown at Bishop Guilfoyle  Saturday 9/3
Bishop Guilfoyle enters this year with a new coach, and a hope for optimism.  Johnstown enters this season with a load of talent, and all the reason in the world to believe they are the best team in the conference.  Gervon Simon has a host of solid receivers to throw to, including the conference's best player, Alkwan Williams.  Williams will wreck havoc on the Marauders offensive hopes as well.  Johnstown is loaded, and poised for a big run this year.  BG has a new coach, and some good athletes, but I do not think the can hang with the Trojans.   This one will be a humbling experience for the host team here.
Trojans 45 Marauders 12

Bishop McCort at Central Cambria Friday 9/2
Both mainstay powers atop the league will begin the year without their usual head coaches, but the same expectations will be there.  Central Cambria will have some good skilled players to go with some pretty good size. Scott Bellock will be making his first start at QB, but Long, O'Saben and McBreen are all capable playmakers that will make this an easy transition into starter.   McCort is coming off a very pedestrian season by their standards, but have a lot of depth returning on both sides of the ball.  Zach Rugg and Gap Barbin will be forces on both sides of the line, while Quarterback, Jesse Cooper will lead a balanced McCort offensive attack.  Christian Leech,Jordan Spangler, and Jerqual Wilson will be great threats on the outside, and Zach Varga should stabilize things with the run. This game will be about who can make big plays. The lines are both solid. I think it comes down to two things, McCort does not play well at Red Devil Stadium, but Jesse Cooper is the more experienced quarterback in the game.  I think Cooper is the difference and McCort will earn a hard fought victory.
Crimson Crushers 34 Red Devils 27

GAME OF THE WEEK.

Richland at Forest Hills Friday 9/2

Well another year, and another Bailey Bowl.  Coach Brandon Bailey, has yet to be his Dad, Don in the six previous matchups in the "Bailey Bowl."  And it usually is not that close.  Forest Hills comes back into this season with a 36-4 record over the past three seasons, not many runs better than that in the entire state I wouldn't think.  Richland comes off a disappointing 6-4 campaign in which a numbers game left them out of the District 6 playoffs.  Through all the turmoil in the offseason, Bailey is still around.  Being a former QB, its been hard for him to move to a running team, but with Johnny Rizzo around, you almost have to.  The big, powerful back will be running behind a big line, and will look to have a huge year.  Forest Hills will center their offense around a Quarterback that can really sling it around.  Gdula is coming off a 27 Touchdown season, and will be doing more of the same.  The Rangers are often balanced and Anthony Unger will look to keep up with the recent string of good backs in Sidman.  The game will come down to a few key points.  How dedicated will Richland be to the pass?  They do not have a proven QB, but they have a back that can really run the ball.  Rizzo may be their most effective source of offense. Will Forest Hills be able to impose their will on the line.  This is usually where Forest Hills beats Richland, but the size is down a bit and Richland has some big kids with experience this year. I think if Rizzo gets enough touches, the Rams will be able to put some points on the board, but I also feel Forest Hills has the advantage with a proven passer and ground game.  I like the elder Bailey to take this matchup again.  Forest Hills is primed for a big season, and Richland should make a push for a playoff berth.

Pittsburgh Pirates Top 10 Prospects. August 20th edition.

The Pirates are spending money......on the draft.  But hey it is something!  Right?  Well anyways, the Pirates Minor League system has never been anything to write home about.  Littlefield set them so far back, and Huntington is doing a nice job of stockpiling talent to bring it back.  He might as well keep the overslot method of paying young High School kids and getting them into the system early. The talent is adding up, and the players are  in the system 3-4 more years than they would be. This year showed that if this thing is done right, Pittsburgh can only go up.  The young players now are getting extensions, and the minor league system is getting better.  The plan is in place, now we all get to see if it plays out as planned.

And here is my Top 10 Pirates prospects.

1. Jameson Taillon. 19. RHP. West Virginia Power(Low-A) Season Stats-2-3 4.52 ERA 80K-17BB. Projected Level '12-High A Bradenten Projected Year of Arrival-2015, 2014 at earliest.

Jameson Taillon is in his first professional season.  He has had mixed success, and is not getting a serious work load. Taillon rarely pitches past 5 innings. His K-BB rate is solid, but he has given up 9 Home Runs in just under 80 innings. His Fastball is upper 90's and is an ideal front line starter, and a potential ace in a few shorts years. He is 19 and a just a year removed from high school, his high ERA does not seem to bother the organization as he will likely move to High A ball next season.

2. Gerrit Cole. 20. RHP. Not Assigned. Season Stats (college). 6-8 3.31 119K-24 BB.
Projected Level '12-High A Bradenten  Projected Year of Arrival-2014.

Gerrit Cole is not far behind Taillon, if he even is at all. His upside is unbelievable, and also could be a future ace.  His Fastball is upper 90's, among other plus pitches.  His college stats are a little alarming though.  There is no doubt that this guy is a future top of the line starter, but the fact his college ERA was the highest in the UCLA rotation is troubling. Obviously the Pittsburgh front office felt that this was not a big problem down the line.  He should start in High A next year, and if he advances quick enough, he could be in Altoona for a few months next year.

3. Starling Marte. 22. CF. Altoona Curve. Season Stats -.328 11HR 47 RBI 21SB
Projected Level '12-AAA, MLB by midseason.Projected Year of Arrival-2012 very likely. 2013 for sure.

Starling Marte is an exceptional talent that has very high value for the Pirates. With the recent extension of Jose Tabata, they simply are stating that at least 2 spots in the Outfield are filled at least through the 2015 season.  So where does Marte fit in?  His power numbers have gotten better through the years, but isn't your typical corner outfield prospect.  There are some that believe he has enough athleticism to unseat McCutchen in Center. Either way, he will start next season in AAA as a 23 year old. He has a chance of being moved to bring in a power bat or a starting pitcher, but him with McCutchen and Tabata will provide the most athletic and exciting outfield in the league by far.  The future is bright for Starling Marte.

4. Luis Heredia. 17. RHP. Gulf Coast Pirates. Season Stats- 1-1 4.28 ERA  22K-19BB 27 IP.
Projected Level '12-GCL Pirates/Short Season A State College. Projected Year of Arrival-2016

This may be the most intriguing prospect the Pirates have had in a while.  He just turned 17 years old last week, and he throws 95 with his fastball. You do not run into kids that can throw that hard, this young, too often.  That is why the Pirates spent a large amount to bring him into the system.  The big thing with Heredia is to not rush him.  He should still be in high school this year, so the big thing is to not overwork him.  He will spend a few years in the minors, but will still be really young upon making it to the majors.  I know the Pirates would love to see him turn into a Felix Hernandez, a very prominent Latin pitcher that has been outstanding for Seattle.  If the Pirates get anything close to what he is, this kid will be worth every single penny.

5. Josh Bell. 19. RF/LF. Not Assigned. Season Stats (high school)- .552 14 HR 48 BB's 19 SB's.
Projected Level '12-Low-A West Virginia. Projected Year of Arrival-2015.

Josh Bell has the role of being the highest paid rookie drafted outside the first round ever.  The Pirates dished out 5 million dollars for this guy's bonus to lure him away from the University of Texas.  Bell is rated very highly, and if it had not been for him saying he was 100% committed to going to Texas, he easily would have been a top 15 pick. The risk is high giving a second round pick this much money, but the consensus is that he is going to be a solid hitter and will be the prized position player in the Pirates system.  He is a switch hitter, and has drawn comparisons to Jason Heyward.   Heyward made it through the minors rather quickly, it would be huge if Bell is as advanced as he was. Either way, his career will be followed closely.

6. Stetson Allie. 20. RHP. State College Spikes Season Stats- 0-2 7.33 ERA 25K-25BB. 23 IP.
Projected Level '12-Low A West Virginia. Projected Year of Arrival-2015.

Stetson Allie is also an overslot second round selection with first round ability.   He was lured away from his North Carolina commitment with a large signing bonus, and for good reason. Allie is a known flame thrower, reaching 100 on occasion with his fastball. He is having a rough go at it during his first professional season and it is obvious he is not nearly as far along as Jameson Taillon.  His command is not there yet, and he is still in the minors to develop off pitches.  This should only be his freshmen season at North Carolina, so he is ahead of the game in that regard.  He is being tried as a starter, but with his hard fastball its easy to see why some people believe he will be a closer at some point.  His development will take longer than Taillon and Cole, but he has the same strong arm as they do.

7.  Colton Cain. 20. LHP. West Virginia Power. Season Stats- 6-8 3.64 ERA 81K-31BB.106 IP.
Projected Level '12-High A Bradenten. Projected Year of Arrival-2015

Colton Cain has been having a very successful season in Low A ball this year.  His ERA is solid, and he has responded rather well to his workload.  His last five appearances have been out of the bullpen, showing the organization is trying to lessen the amount of innings he throws this season. He throws low 90's and has a nice curveball and changeup to go with it.  He is the best lefty in the system at the lower levels, and ideally would fit in with the four hard throwing righties higher on the list.   He should progressively move up the latter assuming no injuries.  He should fare well in Bradenten next season.

8. Robbie Grossman. 21. CF. Bradenten Marauders. Season Stats- .291 12 HR 53 RBI 100BB 113 Runs. Projected Level '12-AA Altoona. Projected Year of Arrival-2014.

Grossman is having an exceptional season, and is quietly turning into a very solid prospect. His season in which he was walked 100 times and scored 100 runs is the first of its kind in the minors since 2004, when Nick Swisher did it.  The knock on Grossman is that he strikes out a lot, but the on base production is great.  He still finds himself low man on the totem pole of Pirates outfielders.  Marte seems the next in line to emerage at the big league level, and former prospects/minor leaguers, Alex Presley and Gorkys Hernandez will still be ahead of him. But as long as he continues to develop as a hitter, it will be a good problem to have.

9. Tony Sanchez. 23. C. Altoona Curve. Season Stats-.235 4 HR 41 RBI
Projected Level '12-Altoona Projected year of Arrival-2013

Tony Sanchez has not looked like the number four overall pick this season.  Not by a long shot.  After batting over .300 his first two professional seasons, Sanchez has seemingly hit a wall this year.   He has never played this long of a season, but his struggles have been evident all year long. He only has 17 extra base hits this season.  Still, Sanchez is the top rated catcher in the system, and it would be foolish to write him off entirely.  I do not think he is ever going to be a Joe Maurer, batting champion type catcher, but he certainly can be more than just a serviceable guy as well.  The Pirates need him to show he can hit better, because it looks like he may have to repeat in Altoona next year, and that is not a good thing. Doumit and Snyder are not getting any younger.  Sanchez needs to be ready to go sooner rather than later.

10. Matt Curry. 23. 1B. Altoona Curve. Season Stats(A/AA combined)-.290 14 HR 70RBI .490 Slugg.
Projected Level '12-AA Altoona. Projected Year of Arrival-2014.

Matt Curry has been very impressive this year in his first full professional season.  The Pirates boldly moved him to Altoona after a hot start in A ball.  He started slowly in AA, but recently has shown signs of life.  He is a doubles machine, and has solid power.  He comes from a top notch college program in TCU.  He will likely begin in Altoona next season, and will be more acquainted to AA pitching. He has the ability to move up to AAA next season, provide it that he hits.  I think he may be a solid pro at some point, but he also has signs of turning into a Steve Pearce.  And by that I mean, an undersized First Basemen from a good college team that hits extremely well in the minors, but struggles in the majors.  I certainly hope that isn't the case, but right now he is the best first base prospect in the system.

This List leaves out some solid players, and borderline prospects....
in AAA Rudy Owens,Jeff Locke, Matt Hague, and Gorkys Hernandez are all capable prospects and may see time during September call ups.  The Bucs also have more overslot HS pitchers with power arms in the lower ends of A, and Alex Dickerson, the third round pick of the Bucs may be a better First Basemen than Curry down the line.

College Football Preseason Top 25.

Nick Saban
1. Alabama.  What to like- The Crimson Tide could easily be argued as the most talented team in the country. Saban has been winning championships on the recruiting trail as well as National Championships.  Assuming they can settle on a Quarterback, the offense will be solid. Trent Richardson is going to make a Heisman push as he will finally get the spotlight to himself.  The Defense was in question last season, but comes into this year as a strength.  Mark Barron is an excellent Safety, and should see All American consideration.
Concerns- No definitive QB is a cause for concern, and losing a few first round picks does not usually add up to a Preseason  number 1 ranking.
Final Call- Bama has talent, they have coaching, and they get Arkansas and LSU at home. The schedule is brutal, as always within the SEC. But I like what Richardson can do.  I think some of these 5 star caliber players will perform, and the Defense will be just plain nasty.  A trip to Happy Valley on September 10 will tell a lot about this team.
2. Oklahoma. What to Like-Offense. They have the ability to drop 40+ almost every game. Landry Jones is coming off a huge year, and will keep chucking the ball around. He's come a long way since his freshmen season.  Ryan Broyles will be among the leaders in the country for receiving stats.  They lost DeMarco Murray, but should still have a stable rushing attack, as they return four offensive linemen.
Concerns- Jones threw 12 interceptions last year, that will happen with the amount of attempts he has.  He needs to lay off the mistakes.  They do not have a proven Back, either.  Defensively, they play in a very up-tempo league also their offense will be scoring early and often, creating more work.   They also have to overcome the tragic death of Linebacker, Austin Box.
Final Call-The Sooners have an explosive offense, loaded with weapons.  They will be lighting up the scoreboard quite a bit. They also do not have to deal with a Big 12 Title game this year, making the run to a championship a little easier. They have a huge early season matchup with Florida State on September 17.  That will be one of the games of the year.
Heisman Candidate, LaMichael James
3. Oregon. What to Like-When thinking of Oregon, speed is the first thing that comes to mind.  This team is abundant in speed and athleticism.  LaMichael James will get serious Heisman contention, and may be the front runner entering the season.  Darron Thomas managed the team well, and his athletic ability is a key asset for this team. He will be counted on to make a few more throws this season, and he should respond.
Concerns-The Defense loses 6 starters.  They played well last year and saw plenty of field action with the offense scoring so much.  It may be difficult for them to duplicate the kind of success they had last year.  Also their two biggest games, LSU and Stanford are outside of Eugene.
Final Call- Oregon had a banner year last season, but ran into Cam Newton in the Title game.  This team can make another serious run this year.  The offense is not really in question, but can the defense keep up?  Time will tell, but LSU at Cowboys Stadium to start the year will be a big, big test.
4. Nebraska.  What to Like-I like the conference change.  The Big 12 over the years turned into a spread wide open league, whereas the Big Ten remained a hard nosed defensive minded league. Nebraska fits in better with the defense and running game style.  Taylor Martinez may now have turned into the league's most dynamic player with Pryor's troubles in Columbus. Jared Crick may also be the league's best defensive player.
Concerns- Its hard to walk into a league and just expect to win it right away. Nebraska has a great challenge ahead.
Final Call- Pelini has really turned the corner in Lincoln and has gotten Nebraska back to where the should be.  With Martinez anchoring the offense, and Crick doing the same on defense, the team is in very good hands.  Their first year in the league gives the Huskers trips to Madison, Happy Valley, and Ann Arbor.  With Ohio State's issues, the league seems open for the taking. Nebraska may be the team that takes control.
5. LSU.  What to Like- LSU returns 15 starters off last year's 11 win season. LSU always finds themselves with some of the best athletes in the country and this year should be no different.  The Defense and playing in Death Valley alone, should keep them in contention for most games.
Concerns- Jordan jefferson is a great talent at QB, but has yet to prove it. The fan base has been on him constantly, but the teams still manages wins games with defense.  He needs to be better this year, or things could get ugly.  A Running Back needs to emerge to help stabilize offensive consistency. And they will face five preseason ranked teams, including #3 Oregon for the opener.
Final Call- It seems Les Miles teams always find a way to win.  Its not always pretty though.  The 2011 Tigers have enough talent to take the SEC, but also could lose 3-4 games.  It could be a real swing season for this program.
Andrew Luck
6. Stanford.  What to Like- Andrew Luck.  They have the best Quarterback in all of college football, and arguably the best player. He makes this team go, and without him its hard to imagine them even ranked.  He's that kind of player. Stepfan Taylor is a reliable running back that will help relieve Luck's responsibilities.
Concerns- It is very concerning that this team may not even be ranked without "Luck". Coach Harbaugh built this thing up, and now he's gone.   They had a good thing going, and hired one of his assistants in David Shaw, but Harbaugh was believed to be the key behind all the success.  Losing 12 starters hurts, too.
Final Call- Stanford is capable of running off 7 wins to start the year before the USC game.  I think they will get those seven wins. Luck's value is immeasurable, and he can will this team to some wins.  If they take care of business against who they should, and take two of three with USC and Oregon and Notre Dame, a Rose Bowl berth would certainly be in order.
7. Florida State. What to Like-The coaching transition to Jimbo Fisher has seemingly been a positive move for the entire program. He has recruited very well thus far, and is loading up for a nice run for the Seminoles.  17 starters back is something that can not be overlooked. The Defense will be among the best in the conference and in the country.  EJ Manuel is an intriguing player for the 'Noles.  He fared well in filling in for Ponder, and he has quite a bit of expectations in what he can do with the full time job.
Concerns-A lot of Florida State's hopes ride with EJ Manuel, if he does not do the job he is expected to do, a long season may be in hand.  The non conference schedule features games with Oklahoma and a trip to Gainesville.
Final Call-I think Florida State's defense will be solid this year, and will help them win some games.  I like what they have up and coming, they have solid skill players and a QB that is capable of a Cam Newton type season.  It may not all happen this year, but a return to Florida State greatness is imminent.
8. Texas A&M. What to Like- The Aggies return 18 starters and  are coming off a very promising campaign.  Football in College Station is alive, and they should be highly competitive in the exciting Big 12. Beating Oklahoma and Texas last year was monumental, and does not happen very often.  Ryan Tannehill got the chance to run the team last year and sparked a 6 game winning streak to close out the regular season. He will have a lot of hype and hope around him this season.  Cyrus Gray also emerged as a great Back that will also receive plenty of attention.
Concerns-Losing a player of Von Miller hurts any team.  Despite having 9 returnees on defense, there will be a void this year at Linebacker. Having Tannehill at QB is not a sure thing, maybe last year was a flash in the pan type deal.  The Big 12 is not an easy task to walk through.
Final Call- A&M is good, but I'm not sold on them being able to take the next step.  A BCS berth is possible, but I would not take it to the bank.  Tannehill is one of the nation's most exciting players and can create a lot big plays with his athleticism.  I don't think they win the league, but they will have a lot to say about who does.
9. Virginia Tech- What to Like- You have to like Virginia Tech's consistency. Year in and year out, the Hokies always seemingly have a solid team. This year will be no different. They will gut games out with running the ball and defense.  The Hokies have a solid core of receivers that might make Logan Thomas' first year as a starter a little easier.
Concerns-There is quite a bit of turnover this year, even at key positions.  Tyrod Taylor was an under appreciated guy that got results.  His play making style of play will be missed, as will the two running backs Ryan Williams and Darren Evans. These guys must be replaced early on, or it could be a long road.
Final Call- Beamer avoids the colossal opener this year, and may have an easing effect on his team. They can run off 5 wins to start the year before meeting Miami on October 8.  They can get some momentum and confidence and play a key role in the ACC race.
10. Oklahoma State. What to Like-The explosive offense will be a force this season.  A team that ranked third nationally in scoring offense and total offense has some key players back. Brandon Weeden amassed over 4,000 yards en route to an Okie State 11 win season. His top target, Justin Blackmon returns after a 20 Touchdown season. The line remains perfectly intact, and should help pave the way for another big year on offense.
Concerns- The architect of the whole scheme has gone and taken his talents to Morgantown.  Who knows how critical Dana Holgorsen's play calling was to the success?  The pieces are still here, but without the guy calling the shots, it could cause a problem.
Final Call- The Cowboys have great offensive pieces.  They should be able to duplicate the type of success they had last season.  They fell just short of beating in-state rival Oklahoma last season, and the game will be in Stillwater this year to close out the regular season.  It could be the biggest meeting of "Bedlam" ever seen.
James White
11. Wisconsin.  What to Like- The great running game of Wisconsin will be instrumental to their success. James White and Montee Ball will have no trouble in filling in for John Clay.  Not to mention, the Badgers got a huge boost to their program in the summer by getting Russell Wilson for a year.  He is a Quarterback with a ton of experience and a very under rated talent.  He is going to make a big impact in the Big Ten.
Concerns-The Badgers did lose some defensive standouts, but nothing to be concerned about. They lost some linemen, but usually they are well stocked there. It hard to find many concerns with this team other than if Wilson does not adjust well.
Final Call- Not tough to figure out a typical Wisconsin team.  They are going to run, and play defense.  There is nothing flashy, but it works.  White and Ball will team up for big seasons, and Wilson should make a solid addition. I do not see them as a Big Ten Champion, but they can put together a very nice year either way.
12. Georgia. What to Like- The Bulldogs may have finally found a Quarterback.  Aaron Murray posted a solid freshmen campaign.  He will have to step up without AJ Green to throw to, but people are confident he can play at a high level.  Isiah Conwell may have to have a big freshmen impact. He is a talented back, and will be asked to contribute right away.
Concerns- Georgia has not been a real contender in a couple years.  Year after year they get hyped up, but can not seem to produce.  Pressure is on Coach Mark Richt to start winning big games.  They have the talent to challenge for an SEC title. It is time to prove they can.
Final Call- By far, they are in the weaker half of the SEC.  They can certainly play with Florida as they go through a coaching change. Murray needs to show consistency and make less mistakes.  If Conwell provides the same type of impact as Lattimore did for South Carolina, the Dogs can make a little noise.
13. USC- What to Like-Matt Barkley heads a USC team ready to avenge some of last season's close losses.  He will make a pitch to be a top draft pick, and will have plenty of talent to throw to, as always.  The Trojans bring back eight starters on defense.
Concerns-The Trojans have some high profile type games, and Barkley has lost some those games over the years.  He needs a prime time type win. A trip to South Bend followed up by a game with Stanford will put USC on the spot for two straight weeks in October.  It will be interesting to see how Matt Barkley responds.
Final Call- Its USC.  They have some of the best talent in the country, bar none.  I like Matt Barkley and see him as a great prospect for the next level. The Trojans can go for a big year, or another 8-5 type year.  It is all on how they play the close games. A 1 point defeat to Washington, 2 to Stanford, and 4 to Notre Dame could have chnaged the face of the whole season. This year, they need to win some of those games.
The All Blue's
14. Boise State. What to Like- Kellen Moore is going to give it another shot at a Heisman trophy. He will lead another powerful offense that will be tough to stop. Doug Martin will keep the running game a threat.  Boise will be able to score at will, and the defense should be solid again.  This is just a well built program.
Concerns- The Broncos will travel East again for another big time opener.  Georgia in the opener will be another true test, but this game has such a big meaning for Boise State. This is one of their few marquee and respected games for the nation to see. Also having the all blue uniforms on the blue turf outlawed may bring the biggest concern.
Final Call- Boise State can go 11-1, and that would be a disappointing campaign.  This program has allowed for itself to be in Championship contention on a yearly basis, but perfection is the only way.  Big games with Georgia and TCU are basically what the season comes down to.  It is hard to imagine them losing to anyone else.
15. Florida. What to Like- The Gators have the athletes to go out and win some games, its just a matter of the new coaching staff finding places for them. Going from a spread to a traditional offense is a rare thing seen these days, but the team is in good hands with Muschamp and Charlie Weis.
Concerns- This team is built for a spread, so like any coaching change, the personnel will not be there right away.  John Brantley may be better suited to play in this offense, but he is coming off an average season.  Weis is a great quarterback's coach, and has his work cut out for him this year.
Final Call-The schedule will be grueling, but the talent is there to still contend for a SEC East Title.  If Brantley responds well to being coached up by Weis, there can be a pleasant surprise in Gainesville this year.
16. Ohio State. What to Like-Tressel went out in flames, but the guy could certainly recruit.  Ohio State still has the players to win. They have enough Backs and Receivers to help Bauserman make a smooth transition into starting quarterback. The Buckeyes also,  have enough defensive talent and tradition to put up yet another great year.
Concerns- Tressel and Pryor are gone. The program is in rough times, to say the least.  They still have to have other key players sit out their suspensions. Ohio State will rebound, but it looks bad as it is.
Final Call- Ohio State will grit out 9 wins just because they are Ohio State. I expect them to go out and hire a big time name like a John Gruden or Urban Meyer, if they can somehow lure them out of retirement.  Any way they approach it, the Buckeyes will be in full force in a few short seasons.
17. West Virginia. What to Like- The Mountaineers should have a good offense.  Geno Smith is expected to put on a very big season, and with Dana Holgorsen on board, chances are he will. They have a big time playmaker in Tavon Austin. They 'Eers are expecting to average a lot of points.
Concerns-They did lose 7 starters on Defense, and that was a very good defense last season.  There was some offseason turmoil with former coach Bill Stewart and new head man, Dana Holgorsen.  They should be able to overcome that, but it did not look good over the summer.
Final Call- I see three teams in the Big East that will challenge to win the league, and WVU is the best of the the teams heading into the season. Geno Smith should adjust and flourish under the new offense.  The Mountaineers are the favorites now to represent the Big East in the BCS.
18. Notre Dame. What to Like- The Irish seem to be up and coming.  They finished the year, with strong wins over USC and Miami. Dayne Crist looks like another solid Notre Dame Quaterback.  Michael Floyd will be back, and has a chance to be the best receiver in the country.  The Defense returns 8 starters and expects to be a strength of the team.
Concerns- Brian Kelly has things going in the right direction, but still lost some questionable games last season.  There is a faint Quarterback battle, and any shaky play by Crist may cause Tommy Rees to get a chance. The schedule is always a test, and this year will be no different.
Final Call- The Irish are getting better. Brian Kelly is a winner, and he will win in South Bend.  They have a tough schedule, but not an impossible one.  Notre Dame can win a lot of games this year, but can struggle through certain patches of their schedule.
19. Arkansas. What to Like-The Offense should be good.  Tyler Wilson is a solid QB prospect, that filled in nicely for Mallett when he was called upon.  He has three experienced wide receivers that are all seniors that can make plays in Jarius Wright, Joe Adams, and Greg Childs. The Defense was better last year, and they bring back seven starters.
Concerns- Well, the star of the offense is out for the year. Knile Davis suffered an ankle injury that will prevent the 1300 yard back to play.  Also, Wilson is expected to do well, but he is no Ryan Mallett.
Final Call-They play in a division in which three schools have won National Championships this past decade, including Alabama and Auburn winning the past two.  Needless to say, Arkansas is in a tough spot.  But they did manage a Sugar Bowl berth last year, and they can make another solid run this year.
20. TCU. What to Like- The Horned Frogs have one of the best programs in the country.  They return all of six starters both ways, yet they are generally considered a Top 25 team.  Ed Wesley is a proven back, and will be counted on to be the catalyst of the offense.  TCU also boasts one of the better team defenses in the country and this year should bring another solid unit.
Concerns- Losing 16 starters off a Rose Bowl Champion team is no walk in the park. Andy Dalton was a top flight Quarterback and will be missed considerably.
Final Call- The soon to be Big East squad can still rack up one more solid campaign in the Mountain West.  They will be challenged by an early season road trip to Baylor, and a huge game looms in November against Boise State on the blue turf.
Marcus Lattimore
21. South Carolina.  What to Like- The Gamecocks are coming off a solid 9 win season, that led to their first SEC Championship game appearance under Steve Spurrier. They return a solid nucleus from that team.  Marcus Lattimore could very well be the best offensive player in the country. He is a powerful back, that is due for a big sophomore season.  Alshon Jeffery is a big talent at receiver.
Concerns-Stephen Garcia has been a shaky Quaterback and him actually playing this year is up in the air due to offseason complications.  Finding a QB to run the show could be a cause of concern.
Final Call- South Carolina can certainly contend for an SEC East title.  Lattimore is a legitimate All American candidate and his ability can carry the team.
22. Miami. What to Like-Jacory Harris is a very, very talented QB.  He just needs to put it all together for a season. The 'Canes bring back 4 offensive linemen, capable running backs, and talented receivers.  The offense should be a solid,  the defense also brings back some very talented play makers.
Concerns- Although talented, underachieving has been this group's biggest flaw.  And now with a new coach, there is two ways how they can respond to the new system, and one could be that they do not respond well.  Golden will be more of a disciplinarian than Shannon was.
Final Call- Al Golden has more talent than he could have dreamed of when he was at Temple. Now its time to see what he can do with it.  Jacory Harris could finally put together all the talent for an entire season, and if he does, Miami can make some moves.
23. Texas. What to Like-Texas has a new revamped coaching staff.  They will have a new focus on running the ball, and Garrett Gilbert should have a big year at Quarterback . Texas is always among the most talented teams in the country, being in one of the most fertile recruiting grounds.  This year should be no different, the defense brings back six starters and should have a nice bounce back year after a un-Texas like 5-7 campaign last year.
Concerns-Garrett Gilbert showed flashes of brilliance, but also showed some inconsistencies.  He needs to cut down from his 17 interceptions last year, and also needs to use his legs more often.  Texas also has a host of unproven receivers, a leader needs to emerge.
Final Call-Texas will not be 5-7 again, thats for sure. But how good can the 'Horns be? They are talented across the board, yet unproven.  If the younger players grow up sooner rather than later, the Longhorns should be able to get 9-10 wins.
Kirk Cousins
24. Michigan State. What to Like-The Spartans bring back twelve starters from their most successful team in years, including QB Kirk Cousins.  He is a very underrated and poised a QB.  He will lead the Spartans to another post New Year's Bowl if all things go as planned.  Edwin Baker will help produce for Sparty on the ground. The defense should be serviceable again, Trenton Robinson is as good as a safety as you will find in the Big Ten.
Concerns-The Spartans are deep, but were exposed badly in last year's two losses.  The 42 point defeat at the hands of Alabama in the Capital One Bowl was not a good way to end the season.
Final Call-Michigan State is capable of having another big season, but they could go back to their underachieving ways. Cousins is the key. He is a heady Quarterback that can win games.  If he produces, the Spartans will be fine.
25. Utah. What to Like-The Utes have had big success for years as a "Mid-Major" Now its time to see what they can do in a "BCS Conference."   They have beaten teams from major conferences in the past. Jordan Wynn is an athletic Quarterback that should grow into a more reliable player this season. The Defense should be deep at Linebacker and should be a good unit.
Concerns-The Utes have fared well against Power conference teams before, but can they do it week in and week out?  A game at USC in week two will say a lot about where they are.
Final Call-The Utes will be successful in the Pac 12 down the line, but will it happen right away?  It can happen as long as Wynn produces like he is expected too. They avoid games with Stanford and Oregon, which is lucky for any team in this league.

All is Not Lost.

The Pirates are in a bit of a rut, to say the least.  Losing seven games in the middle of a pennant race is not ideal, but still 52 games are on the schedule and a large number of them are against division opponents.  The Pirates are either going to stand up and stop the bleeding and keep the pressure on, or get crushed by their much more powerful rivals.  Either way, they will be able to say they at least had a shot at it.  The team has energized a once baseball ghost town.  They have excited the die hard fans, but more importantly they brought out the Pirates fans in hiding.  Nobody should blame these fans for not showing their true colors over the years. Even for loyal fans, it must be tough sitting through Zach Duke starts, Lloyd McClendon outbursts, and Jason Bay striking out on a 0-2 pitch in the dirt.  A casual fan is staying clear of that. The Pirates have brought out the best in a once proud, "Baseball Town". People are watching games, attending games, and buying merchandise. The internet buzz and radio air time is at an all time high. Everybody has seemingly forgotten the Penguins lost in the first round, and training camp in Latrobe has not brought quite the same stir as it usually brings.   I think people genuinely bought into this team.  They are not doing anything spectacular on a larger scale, but finding themselves in first place in late July was maybe the most compelling sports story Pittsburgh has ever seen.  Eighteen years people, that is an entire lifespan for many young Bucco fans.  This is a big deal.

This also shows that with a little bit more money spent, that the Pirates can grow and compete with the Penguins and Steelers for attention.  Maybe never reaching those heights, but certainly people won't be counting down the days between the Stanley Cup playoffs and the start of training camp quite as quickly.  I do not think the Pirates will go out and get a Prince Fielder type player, but certainly adding a key player in his prime rather is more possible than ever.  I doubt that we will see many more Lyle Overbay, Jeromy Burnitz and Matt Morris type signings.  But guys like Jeff Francouer, Jason Kubel, and Michael Cuddyer could be much better options than Garrett Jones, Steve Pearce and Matt Diaz.  These guys are out there. And they could really help the offense.  Cuddyer is having a great year(.301 BA, 18 HR, 61 RBI, and .494 Slugging).  Kubel is also a stable bat is batting .307 this season. Francouer is having a career year(.271 14 63 .457) is still young, and fits in athletically with the Pirates.  I think adding a bat like that, along with the emergence of Andrew McCutchen and Neil Walker could be a great thing for Pittsburgh.  Either way, I think the ownership has seen some very promising things. Pittsburgh still cares about its baseball, and I do not see an outcry if they raise ticket prices.  People will pay for a winner, and the more seats sold, means the more revenue this team has, thus more spending money towards the on-field product.  Pittsburgh has been wise signing aggressively internationally and through over slotting draft picks.  Pittsburgh is adding top of the line college recruits and adding them to the system quickly.  Who knows how many future top three round picks they have received through this aggressive paying style?  It could really play out well in the end.
The pitching in the lower end of the system is outstanding and a real force to be reckoned with.  Jameson Taillon, Gerrit Cole, and over slot pitcher Colton Cain will be featured in High A ball next year.  That is not even mentioning 16 year old Luis Heredia, and flame thrower Stetson Allie.  The Pirates have just under two weeks to possibly sign second round pick, Josh Bell.  He is believed to have Jason Heyward type skills, as a switch hitter.  If the Pirates manage to pull that one off, it may be the most memorable over signing of a prospect in history.  The upper level of the minor leagues is not rated as highly, but a large amount of younger guys liter the Pirates active roster. McCutchen and Walker have done their part this year, but Tabata and Alvarez have shown inconsistencies in their first "full" professional season.  Injuries have slowed them a bit, but still have not lived up their billing during their healthy stints. But it is still possible that these guys can have the same type of breakout years like the other two young stars.  It is yet to be seen if Alex Presley and Chase d'Arnaud can produce on a consistent basis at this level, but these are two other young guys that have shown spurts of  excitement.  Starling Marte may get a shot at some point next season as well, if not he may be in the mix for a trade in the off season to bring in a legitimate bat or arm.  His value is very high right now however the Pirates chose to use him.   The point being is that the Pirates have athletes and options at this point.  This is something that has not been seen in Pittsburgh for some time.  The Minor Leagues are stocked better than ever, and the Pirates have a core of young talents that are playing together at the same time.
There is no doubt this team has overachieved, but they also did play well this season. There is a reason for hope next season. These young guys will only get better, these prospects will be a year closer to their debuts, and ownership might take the next step for the Major League squad.  These last few weeks will still be exciting, but the hope is shrinking every day.  Things look bleak through a seven game losing streak, but I don't feel this team is going to run away.  Hurdle is a great manager and is owed a great deal of the success.  He brought in a winning culture, and played aggressively. Has he cost the Pirate games? Yeah, that can easily be argued. But has he won them some games?  No doubt about it, he is the best manager this city has seen since Leyland.  He does not really have any more talent than Tracy,Russell, and McClendon had, but he get more out of them than those aforementioned ever did. A team with Walker, McCutchen, Hanrahan, and Hurdle is a good thing coming back.  There is a distinct possibility Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder will not be in the National League Central next season.  The Pirates can and should make a move or two in the off season and give St. Louis and Milwaukee a run for it. They have been this year, with a significantly less talented team.  I would like nothing more to see Hurdle have an extra bat or two, and those two teams missing their franchise players. That would make for an ever more memorable summer in 2012.     The world better not end.
