Baseball did not get what it wanted, It got what it needed.

It could easily be stated that this was the best single date in Baseball regular season history, but now can you say that with the understanding that this game dates back to the 1800's? Ok, maybe that may be a stretch, but in a made for TV era we live in, this was easily one of the most exciting nights the game has ever seen.  The Cardinals started September 8 1/2 games behind the Atlanta Braves in the Wild Card race, by September 15 the margin was at 4 1/2 games, and by September 27 the race was tied. The Cardinals put the pressure on the Braves for an entire month, and started last night by really putting the pressure on Atlanta.  By virtue of a five run first inning against the lowly Astros, St. Louis all but forced a one game playoff tomorrow night, provide it that Atlanta could beat the Phillies at home with ace, Tim Hudson on the hill. The weight of the collapse must have been too much to bear for the Braves, as they had the lead in the 9th inning with their stud rookie closer, Craig Kimbrel on the mound and he could not protect the lead. That blown save ultimately led to the Phillies 13th inning victory.  Atlanta's 8 1/2 game lead with a month left was over. An epic rally by the Cardinals, and a forgettable month by Atlanta defined their wild card race of the National League, and those games were boring compared to the American League.  Tampa Bay and Boston basically had a duplicate race of their own, with the Rays playing the role of St. Louis, and Boston doing the choking.  Boston appeared to be in much better shape, and had things pretty well in grasp.  The Sox were leading the last place O's, and Tampa was down 7-0 early to the Yankees.  Than the Baseball God's took fate a different way, Boston's momentum was halted by a conveniently placed rain shower in the midst of the 7th inning.  That was conveniently placed for Tampa, as Evan Longoria stole the show.  Tampa rallied for 3 runs in the 8th, looking like they were setting up for a nice tease for their fans, and with 2 outs, Mr. Longoria drove a pitch 12 rows deep, and we had a game on our hands.  Red Sox nation now has two games to worry about, their beloved Red Sox, and their new second favorite team, the hated Yankees. Tampa held strong in the 9th and got their chance in the bottom half, and with 2 outs, none other than .202 pinch hitter Dan Johnson knocks a pitch over the right field fence. Boston resumed, and lights out closer, Jonathon Papelbon let the lead in.  Now we had a lot of Yankee fans, and within minutes of the Orioles winning run, Evan Longoria belts out his second clutch Home Run of the night, and we have an AL Wild Card Champion.

This night provided us with the conclusion to two epic collapses, two teams playing red hot baseball that overcame nine game deficits, two extra inning games, three epic finishes and countless numbers of clutch plays, and big hits.  I am not positive, but I do not think this could have been scripted any better.  Baseball got exactly what it wanted, but more importantly what it needed. Baseball is certainly second fiddle to the NFL anymore, but in their showcase night for the ages, it still proves to be as exciting as ever. I was loving every second of these games and I had no personal vest in either game. This was must see TV at its finest. ESPN lucked out that they got three must see matchups with all the suspense of a game seven brings. It was perfect, it was exciting, and it was great baseball.   Major League Baseball has just set itself up for some exciting playoff baseball thanks in large part to the Braves and Red Sox choking in September. The chess game of baseball is not for everyone, but when it gets down to this point, a few more people start watching.  Baseball purists were in their glory last night, as the showcase games set the tone for a memorable October to come.  I'll be watching, and thanks to last night, a few more will be too.

Couch Potato's Guide September 29-October 3

10. Air Force at Navy Saturday 12:00 CBS
Doesn't quite have the same ring as Army Navy, but this is actually the better game from a Football standpoint. Air Force runs that same offense as Navy and on some seasons, they run it better.  Kudos to CBS for televising the game, Army-Navy is a given game on TV, but Air Force guys sacrifice a lot too and sometimes are overlooked. They are battling for that Commander in Chief Trophy also. And they are the current holder's of the trophy.

9. Northwestern at Illinois Saturday 12:00 ESPN2
Wait the game isn't a Wrigley Field? Forget this, I'm not watching.  Ehh I might.  Illinois is 4-0 and could just be a factor in the Big Ten.  Northwestern is coming off a loss to Army.  Thats not like the Wildcats as they have been a real solid team the past few years.  I am bummed about the no Wrigley Field thing....I mean I guess this was the issue...Ok, fair enough.

8. Michigan State at Ohio State Saturday 3:30 ABC
I guess I'm sticking with the Big Ten theme this week, hope you like boring Football.  Sparty lost to Notre Dame, but still can be a factor in some big games, and Ohio State is Ohio State.  They'll come out and play you tough, even though they are down.  The Buckeyes have a QB shuffle happening, while MSU has a very steady QB that you should check out.  He may not be a top flight draft pick, but he will stick around in the NFL.

7. Steelers at Texans Sunday 1:00 CBS
This actually will be one of the better NFL games this week.  Houston looks good right now. Schaub and Andre Johnson are lethal, the defense can hold its own now, and of course!!! Peyton Manning isn't playing.  I think Houston will break through in the playoffs, and a team that may come up down the line are these Pittsburgh Steelers.  The Black and Gold are struggling right now, but still when you break it down, they are a top 3 AFC team until proven otherwise.  Plus you can't miss Mike Wallace, without a doubt one of the most underrated players in the league. Well maybe you can miss him, he's that fast.

6. Auburn at South Carolina Saturday 3:30 CBS
Just another one of those weekly grudge matches between SEC powers.  No big deal. Auburn is a lucky team to say the least. They escaped wins last year, and have been this year.  They got caught finally, but they always seem to make any game interesting.  The Ole Ball Coach has perhaps his best team ever at South Carolina, but will they make that transition from an 8-4 team at best, to elite championship contender? These types of games will tell you.

5. Texas A&M at Arkansas Saturday 12:00 ESPN
Hmm another huge non conference college football battle at Jerry Jones' palace....Whats up with this?  As for the game, it should be a good one.  Both teams had tough losses to good teams last week, and neither one wants to drop two in a row.  Ryan Tannehill for A&M is a very exciting player, and is just plain fun to watch. Arkansas has an exciting offense also. Both are top 25 teams, and this is the best Noon game of the day, wake up and watch Corso put on a giant Badger head, and watch the game.  Not a bad Saturday morning.

4. Jets at Ravens Sunday 8:20 NBC
The two teams that just can't seem to take the next step.  Both are forces in the AFC, yet they haven't proven it all in the playoffs.  This is a good showcase game for both teams.  Both are capable Super Bowl contenders, led by prize defenses.  But on a scheduling note, How is ESPN letting Sunday Night Football get better games the Monday Night Football.  I'm forced to watch these Sunday Night games now, and get a large dose of Chris Collinsworth......Not what I need before a Monday morning. I mean seriously.....

3. Clemson at Virginia Tech Saturday 6:00 ESPN2
Clemson, 4-0?  Yeah their collapse should start very soon.  But they should ride this out as long as possible.  Va Tech hasn't played anyone, and has remained eerily quiet through four weeks.  I mean, has anyone heard what has been happening in Blacksburg? I just know they haven't lost yet, Clemson hasn't either, and they are both ranked and Virginia Tech has the best entrance for any sports team on any level. Period. No doubt about it.   Enjoy.

2. Alabama at Florida Saturday 8:00 CBS
Saturday Night in the Swamp, Nick Saban coming to town, two undefeated teams, How is there a game in a week better than this?  This game is huge, and this game will be great to watch. Florida really has some speed burners on offense, and Alabama has a lights out defense. Will Muschamp gets his first epic test as a head coach, and I think he is ready for it.  Write it down, Florida is pulling the upset and knocking of the Tide.  You will not be disappointed in the least.  But what could be better than this?
.......

1. Nebraska at Wisconsin Saturday 8:00 ABC
Gameday is in town. Nebraska will play their Big Ten game, and both teams are really good.  You hear a lot about the "Sea of Red" when these teams play, but what happens when they play each other? An Ocean of Red?  It might be.  Nebraska has a tough QB in Taylor Martinez and the dude can really play.  But Wisconsin has a guy named Russell Wilson and he's the toast of Madison right now.  Slowly, but surely the Badger Bandwagon is filling up.  How could it not be?  They have it all, but they get the first chance to see it run against a good team.  I am really looking forward to this one.  You know Camp Randall will be absolutely rocking. Enjoy the Weekend!

LHAC Football Forecast Week 5.

After a 5-1 mark last week, it brings my season total to 20-4.  Missed the Westmont game, I thought they would generate more scoring, they held Somerset to 6 points on offense, but coughed up a long fumble return which cost them.  Forest Hills rolled as expected. Carroll woes continue, and McCort and Johnstown were tested, but survived in the end.

Somerset (2-2) at Johnstown (4-0) Friday 7:00 Trojan Stadium
Somerset enters this game with some slight momentum, after getting a large losing streak off their back, they added another win to the season. Tanner Stull has been running the offense well, but still they have been lacking touchdowns.  He has engineered two wins since the starter went down.  Matt Boyer is another talented sophomore who is running well and has four touchdowns on the season.  Somerset isn't quite ready for games of this magnitude, they are young and do not seem ready to compete with the big boys, as it was evident with their tough loss to McCort a few weeks prior.  Johnstown will pose quite the threat.  The Trojans enter week 5, as one of two undefeated teams left in the league.  They boast a terrific passing game, and with last week's performance a dangerous rushing game.  Tim Odum is averaging an outstanding 10 yards a carry and has put up 5 touchdowns.  Gervon Simon added a 220 yard rushing game, proving you have to respect his legs.  He can sling the ball as well, with 785 yards and 10 touchdowns already.  His favorite targets include Mark Watson and Dwight Andrews who have 13 and 14 catches, respectively.  Alkwan Williams has been a man among boys on the defensive side of the ball.  He is the heart and soul of the defense, and I imagine he will be causing problems all night for Somerset.  Johnstown should win this game handily.  They are more experienced, and more explosive.
Trojans 49 Golden Eagles 7

Bishop Guilfoyle (0-4) at Penn Cambria (3-1) Friday 7:00
Bishop Guilfoyle enters the game struggling, but last week they showed some signs of life.  Still averaging only 11 points a game will not win you many games. The Marauders played well against Forest Hills for a quarter, but turnovers created too much to overcome. Pat Irwin did just about everything he could to keep BG around. He rushed for 125 yards and two touchdowns, threw for 91 more, and intercepted a pass.  He is a tough kid, and I believe he will help Guilfoyle turn it around next season.  They are very young, they just need to keep improving every game.  Penn Cambria overcame a sluggish start against Bishop Carroll, and ended up winning 28-0. Not all that surprising, even good Penn Cambria teams do not seem to beat teams handily.  Jordan Fuller put together a great game by scoring two rushing touchdowns, and returned a fumble for another score.  His season rushing total is now at 410 to go with 3 touchdowns. Andrew Buck is always a threat on the ground and has done a nice job throwing this year.  Penn Cambria is a good, solid football team.  They should make the playoffs, and will challenge Forest Hills for the Section I crown.  They will beat BG, but I think Irwin will make a few plays to keep them around.
Panthers 27 Marauders 12

Bedford (2-2) at Westmont (1-3) Saturday 1:00 Price Field
A few plays here, a few plays there, Bedford is 4-0.  They had Richland and Bishop McCort on the ropes in consecutive weeks, and fell short both times.  Bedford is much better than many were anticipating.  A lot of that has to do with a more aggressive offensive attack. They have the ability to throw now, and teams have to account for it. Marcus Shippey has thrown for 532 yards and 8 touchdowns. He is on track to have his best season yet by far.  Shippey, Aaron Henry, and Dakota Hess have done well in the running game, and Luke Campbell is having a really good year at receiver. He has hauled in 14 catches for 324 yards and 5 scores.  Bedford can play, but the biggest issue this week will be the health of Marcus Shippey.  He sat out the final plays against Bishop McCort, and I really do not know the severity of the injury.  I am assuming he is playing, but I really do not know.  Westmont was a little disappointing last week. They forced turnovers, but could not capitalize.  Ryan Burnheimer continues to be a dominant player on the ground. He has been durable so far, he has been asked to carry the ball 120 times already. His longest run is only 27 yards, so you know this guy has worked for all of his 566 yards.  Westmont has had some success through the air, but it still is not a dangerous presence in their offense. Glennon has thrown 4 interceptions to no touchdowns. They need to add  some threat of the pass to aid  Burnheimer's efforts.Bedford's weakness is their defense, so I expect Westmont to score the ball a little more consistently this week.  I'm picking this game with the assumption of Shippey playing.  Bedford has a chance at a playoff berth, and to attain that, they need to win this game.  Westmont is better than what they are showing, and I expect them to keep the game close, but in the end Bedford can really play.
Bisons 34 Hilltoppers 20

Cambria Heights (2-2) at Forest Hills (3-1) Friday 7:00 G.H. Miller Field
Cambria Heights is at .500 in week 5.  Its like the Pirates being .500 in July.  This does not happen very often.  The Highlanders are pretty good, and are led by a very promising group of juniors. It all starts with Running Back, Tyler Crawford. He is coming off of a 209 yard 4 touchdown performance over Central Cambria. Ben Myers adds another threat on the ground as he has 185 yards and 4 scores on the season. Nate Bearer is doing a nice job at QB, but needs to be more productive.  The Highlanders defense is doing alright, but still need to be more consistent, especially against the two pronged attack of Forest Hills. It all starts with senior play caller, Justin Gdula. He has been very efficient thus far, and has managed the games well since the opening week loss to Richland.  Shawn Dell has emerged as the feature back for this Ranger squad.  He had a good game last week and is a threat running and catching the ball.  Shope and Burkey are being very effective as receivers, and the offense has been clicking, racking up 121 points in the past three weeks. The Ranger defense has been playing better of late, and they seem to be improving each week.  This game is tough to call. I believe Forest Hills will win, but I just don't know how well Heights will play. I could see this game go in favor of Forest Hills by a large margin, or Heights playing them tough. I'm playing it safe and taking the Rangers big, but I could see the Highlanders making a game of it.
Rangers 38 Highlanders 14

Central Cambria (0-4) at Bishop Carroll (0-4) Friday 7:00 DeGol Field
The Battle of Ebensburg.  Two very proud teams, and two very disappointing season thus far. Somebody will leave this game Friday night with a win, Who will it be?      15 quarters.   That is how long its been since Bishop Carroll last scored a point.  The are being outscored 140-7 on the season.  Those are not very pretty stats.  Carroll has been struggling to find guys to be consistent at their positions.  Josh Barzdo has seen the most touches, and is not having the same success he had last season.  The Huskies were not expected to be able to pass, but the lack of running game is a bit confusing.  Many of these linemen paved the way to a district championship last season.  The defense hasn't been much better. Its been rough all around. Things on the other side of the hill have been nearly as rough. Their loses aren't quite as lopsided.  Stephen Papuga and Stephen O'Saben have done alright being the primary offensive threats, but the offense is still sputtering for the most part.  Scott Bellock has struggled early on at quarterback.  Both teams are having down years to say the least.  I really don't know who is better, because neither team has really shown anything at all.  I'm going to flip a coin and pick a winner....Seriously....Heads-BC, Tails-CC.......And its Tails.
Red Devils 13 Huskies 12

GAME OF THE WEEK
Richland (3-1) at Bishop McCort (4-0) Friday 7:00 Point Stadium

This game has grown over the years.  With Richland winning 30-27 in thrilling fashion back in 2007, this annual game has seen some classic battles and shootouts.  McCort won a hard fought game in 2008, 38-34. In 2009 McCort won a shootout 69-35. And last season McCort survived a 16-14 game.  The Rams and Crushers will again be expected to put on another show.  Richland will again be featured in one of the marquee match ups of the week.  Bishop McCort is coming off a hard fought comeback victory.  This game is for bragging rights, and means plenty to both team's playoff picture. This should be a good one.  Richland enters this game with a high powered, high scoring offense. Johnny Rizzo leads the attack with 665 yards and 7 scores. He is a big, hard nosed runner that will pose problems for McCort's small linebacking core.  Richland's passing game has been very effective as well compiling 11 touchdowns between them.  Matt Shaffer and Nico Pecora have done a tremendous job for sophomores running the offense. Kyle Flick, Zach Solarczyk, and Zach Hanley all have come up big as receivers. And this Richland offensive line is one of their better ones in recent memory.  This offense is solid all around, but the defense has been the thorn in their side. Bedford passed all over Richland, and yet they held Johnstown to 25 passing yards. The problem was Johnstown ran for over 400 yards.  The athletes and speed of Johnstown seemed to take effect on Richland's defense.  Bishop McCort will look to combine passing and running to attack this defense.  Jesse Cooper has 583 yards through the air with 6 Touchdowns and 1 interception. He has a go to guy in Christian Leech, who has 393 yards on 14 catches with 4 scores. Jordan Spangler, Jerqual Wilson, and Nemo Trexler will also play factors in the passing game.   McCort's rushing game provides balance, and is one extra thing Richland will have to worry about. Varga and Belskey have combined for 404 yards and 9 touchdowns.  Wilson has hit some big plays on reverses as well.  McCort's defense was exposed a bit last week also.  They have small defensive backs, and if you have big receivers they will struggle.  Also Shippey's hard nosed running style was a problem, and Rizzo is a big physical guy just like him.  This game has good offenses going against vulnerable defenses.  It is going to be a very exciting game.  I am taking McCort for a few advantages I see.  Jesse Cooper is a better Quarterback than the two sophomores of Richland. He is a senior leader that will make plays for you. I also think McCort has more speed.  Richland struggled with Johnstown's speed, and the Crushers have a few kids that can run the same way.  It's going to be high scoring and close, and it could really go either way.  But if I was spending money on an LHAC game this week, this is the no brainer choice.

Camp Davis Pays It's Hos and You Should Too [Guest Post]

The near-death of Miami football is a nasty omen for people with heavy investments in college football. But to me, it meant little or nothing.

The method of football operation at Carnegie Mellon was like a friendly, thirsty bouncer in one of New York's most exclusive night clubs. He'll get you in-- but the rest is up to you. And if you could bring him a beer every twenty minutes-- that would be great. Naturally, I spent all my money on over-priced drinks and things and never saw that poor bouncer again.

The University of Miami, though is different. It's a place where pimps thrive and NO ONE eats the complimentary buffet. The metaphor is this:

A vulnerable young girl pays a "club-owner" $100/night for the right to dance at a club. The club then charges a $20 cover to ravenous beasts for the right to come throw their money at the girls. The girls work hard to earn their money back and keep the slight remainder. The pimp is collecting cash all night, so, naturally, he pays no taxes. But the pimp is righteous, and condemns prostitution.

As luck would have it, I know such a "club-owner".

It was 3:30 on a dark Tuesday morning when I heard the phone ring on his personal line in New Jersey. "Too late?" I thought. No, never too late for capitalists or narcoleptics.

The phone rings three times and then:

SIMON:  Hello?
BRAD:   Hi, Simon it's Brad
SIMON:  Ahh, Brad -- you ravenous beast. What can I do for you?
BRAD:  Are you ready for a powerful idea? I wanted to warn you about a crazed sensation that's sweeping the country. It's called THE INTERNET-- and it's threatening to put you out of business...
SIMON:  The internet?
BRAD:  Yes, it's this new phenomenon that's popular with the kids. It lets you see all types of naked women at any time, from anywhere.... for free.
SIMON:   FREEE?!?
BRAD:  Yes, free. But I have an idea...
SIMON:  Well... go on.
BRAD:  Now, Simon what do men like more than anything in the world?
SIMON:   Umm.... Pasta? No, Cannolis.. No, No-- FOOTBALL!!
BRAD:  No, Simon. What men like more than anything in the world is having sex with little girls.
SIMON: OF COURSE!
BRAD:  Now Simon, What do girls like more than anything in the world?
SIMON:  Backhands!
BRAD:  No, Simon. What girls like more than anything in the world is money.
SIMON:   Ahh... precisely. I see where you're going with this...
BRAD:  You do?
SIMON:   Sure, what we need to do is create an internet strip club. So people can pay us ANY TIME FROM ANYWHERE!
BRAD:  Genius. But I was thinking more along the lines of letting men pay your girls to have sex with them. And then splitting the money in exchange for long-term stability and protection.

BRAD: Simon? Hello-- Simon??

SIMON: ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR GODDAMNED MIND? You want me to pay MY CUTSOMERS?!? Do you even have the slightest fucking clue as to the implications of what you're suggesting? This is a goddamned institution of the goddmaned arts, and you want me to turn it into some 'revenue-sharing', 'stability-having', 'emancipation-proclamating' socialist dictatorship? Well, fuck you, Brad. Fuck you very much.

[Click]

At this, I felt ashamed or flustered. So I punished myself by drinking Vladimir Vodka and listening to local radio.... Maybe Simon was right though. Maybe it was wrong to pay strippers, especially if profiting profusely. And although I didn't feel it now, perhaps my college degree did make me better than everyone else-- especially if I'll be smothered in debt for the next 17-20 years. But so what? It's was time to focus on life's more meaningful pursuits. It was time to become a professional baseball player or plumber or something hip.

It was time to start a football farm league. To give kids the choice in the tag-team match between no-pay and degree vs. pay and trade-skill. It was time for a competitive (Eurpoean) alternative to college football, where teams could train future-professionals in their systems and sell their developed players to the highest bidders when the time was right. It was time to admit that money does not inherently breed corruption-- and if used without manipulation, breeds clarity. It was time to tell shitty players they were shitty. And not with the passive-aggressive, my $20 almuni-handshake was better than your $5 alumni-handshake bullshit. It was time to admit that no one gives a fuck about the University of Miami. That people came to see Ed Reed, Andre Johnson, Ray Lewis, and Ken Dorsey. It was time to admit that Ken Dorsey was shitty, too.

And so, without further adue, it brings me great pleasure today to announce the grand opening of two new football youth academies. The first will be located in Miami, Florida-- and will operate under the Miami Dolphins administration. The other, dubbed "Camp Davis" will be located in Oakland, California. Here, accepeted students will learn a trade during the day, and train with world-class coaches and athletes during the night. While the schools accept no external individual applications, they employ some of the nation's top football scouts. All players who meet the qualifications will be paid a yearly salary of $30,000/year while receiving tution-free training at local trade schools. "We see it as a paradigm shift in youth sport," said Al Davis, "because at the end of day it's about having a choice to pursue your path in life. And if you want to be a professional athlete, we believe we've created the best possible path."

Couch Potato's Guide September 22-26.

10. NC State at Cincinnati Thursday 8:00 ESPN
A little Thursday Night Football never hurt anyone. I think it is an intriguing match up?  ACC-Big East, it just comes at the right time. Conference expansion is such a hot topic issue, and the ACC has once again raided the Big East, and Cincinnati looks to be a program that is currently shuffling, uhhh yeah they are actually in panic mode. As a Pitt fan, I feel bad leaving our Big East comrades, its like were cheating on them Sorry guys!!!  I feel this song is appropriate.

9. Steelers at Colts Sunday 8:20 NBC
Steelers v. Colts, should be a good game right?  It always is....oh thats right, Peyton isn't around.  Sucks to be a Colts fan right now.  They are nothing without him.  The Steelers beat up Seattle last week, big deal. They should beat the Colts up in this game as well.  The Colts have an interesting decision, though. Peyton may seriously be injured, or he is not going to be around forever.  So some Colts fans have already started the best campaign I have heard in a while,  "Suck for Luck"  A few teams are in the running, should be more exciting than the Super Bowl race,

8. Vanderbilt at South Carolina Saturday ESPN2 7:00
Really, this is must watch television? YES,  Vanderbilt is playing a relevant game!  They are 3-0!!!They are never 3-0.  This is like the Pirates playing a relevant game in June, it isn't a big deal to most teams, but to this team its huge! And of all the programs in the SEC, its hard to not root for them against the football factories in that league. And you might want to check out Marcus Lattimore from South Carolina. He is a BEAST. He has Adrian Petersen physical tools as a sophomore, he's worth the watch, and likely will lead a 30 point South Carolina win.

7. North Carolina at Georgia Tech Saturday 12:00 ESPN
This is a good Noon game. Why not?  Both teams have started 3-0, and are playing pretty well, and both are ranked. One team is going to move up to 4-0 and potentially play a factor in the ACC.  Georgia Tech runs the option to perfection, if you like that kind of football, this is the game for you.

6. Redskins at Cowboys Monday 8:30 ESPN
I'm not that big on the NFC East, but I guess some people are.  The Redskins are 2-0 and people are going nuts, relax guys its 2 games.  Tony Romo is all the sudden losing criticism after one win over the 49ers? Come on guys, look at the guys track record. Thats why this division is too much to tolerate.  Anything that happens, they make it newsworthy. I mean we are two weeks in, and ESPN is making too big of stories already, predictable. You don't even half to watch the game, ESPN will overhype this game as much as humanly possible.

5. Florida State at Clemson Saturday 3:30 ESPN
FSU is coming off an emotional loss to the hands of Oklahoma. They are still a really good team, and looks ready for primetime again.  Clemson is coming off an emotional win, and will likely be a disappointing team before October is over. The Tigers are just one of those heartbreaking teams. This should still be a good game, with a great atmosphere.  I think this is a big game for the ACC race. Definitely a good watch.

4. USC at Arizona State Saturday ESPN 10:15
I love the late night Football games. I'm usually not done watching football this point, and ESPN has been putting on some good Pac 12 games on.  I can't complain. USC is solid this year, Matt Barkley is a top notch QB prospect, and he is playing like one.  This is their first road test, and it will be a test. Arizona State is pretty good, and they have a pretty good quarterback themselves. Brock Osweiler is really good, and really tall. 6-8 to be exact!  Check this game out, if you have it in you to keep watching football at this point.

3. Arkansas at Alabama Saturday 3:30 CBS
Big Time SEC battle. Arkansas wants to prove they are right there with Alabama and LSU.  Thats a tall task, those teams are pretty good. But Arkansas can play. I'm interested to see how Alabama's offense is holding up, they haven't been really tested yet. This should be a big test. Alabama's defense is worth watching, they are really good. They have like 9 guys that can play in the NFL on this defense, yeah good luck.

2. LSU at West Virginia Saturday 8:00 ABC
Yeah huge game.  WVU is a potential SEC team, and this may be a good way to prove they belong. College Gameday will be there. The atmosphere in Morgantown will be outrageous.  Selling Beer in the stadium, yikes. LSU thinks they've seen some atmosphere in the SEC, they're in for a treat in Morgantown.  I mean is couch burning now a felony anywhere else?!  Either way, for the game itself, WVU has a good offense, and LSU has the best defense in the country.  Big tests for both teams.  Should be a good one.

1. Oklahoma State at Texas A&M Saturday 3:30 ABC
If we get stuck with the damn Ohio State-Colorado regional game over this, I will not be a happy camper.  This game is going to be really, really good. Both are top 10 teams, and both have a chance to take down mighty Oklahoma, and get into a championship situation.  For that to happen, this become a must win game for both teams.  Offensive fire power will be everywhere, and this will be an offensive show. I really, really want to see this game.  You should too.  Enjoy the weekend!

LHAC Football Forecast Week 4.

Forest Hills 3-0 at Bishop Guilfoyle 0-3 Friday 7:00 Mansion Park
Well Bishop Guilfoyle played well against Cambria Heights, but not well enough to win the game.  I think it starts with a very unstable rushing game, and that of course, stems from injuries.  Pat Irwin is now the team's leading rusher and passer.  He had his best game in the air against Cambria Heights, but the fact he has no threat of a run to aid his cause is not ideal going against Forest Hills.  The Rangers historically have been the league's best defense, and the past few weeks they have gotten back on track.  The Rangers offense is clicking once again, and that is due in fact that Anthony Unger is back on offense.  He was the team's leading returning rusher coming into the year, and has seen some limited carries after not playing offense in the Richland game.  Unger along with Shawn Dell will continue to provide the Rangers with a good ground game.  Gdula is coming off some very efficient games, and Shope and Burkey are making plays.  This doesn't bode well for the Marauders. Forest Hills is gearing up for another run at the AA Crown, and still play a big factor in their own destiny for the the LHAC Crown. The Rangers are rolling right now, and BG just happens to be in the way.  Rangers keep on, keeping on.
Rangers 49 Marauders 6

Penn Cambria 2-1 at Bishop Carroll 0-3 Friday 7:00 Saint Francis
Bishop Carroll pushed forward quite a few steps last season with a trip to the State "Final 4", and well now they are taking a few back....to say the least.  BC is being outscored 112-7 through three games. Coach Sponsky is looking for answers, and finding very little. In three games, the Huskies have had three different Quarterbacks, and nobody is sticking out.  Running wise, Barzdo has been moved around and he is not having the same success at Running Back as he did at Quarterback.  The Huskies have given Cody and Caleb Kephart chances to run the ball, along with Daniel Lesney,  yet they still can't find a combination that works.  The defense isn't exactly doing the offense any favors either, they can't get off the field, and the offense can't stay on the field.  Tough way to win games.  Penn Cambria took care of business against their rival, Central Cambria last week, and they are looking to keep pace with Forest Hills in the Section I chase.  The offense has been showing more balance than anticipated, as Andrew Buck passed for over 100 yards against the Red Devils last week. The tough running, Jordan Fuller has already racked up 317 yards through three games. The Panthers will continue to pound the opposition with him. The defense is playing well, and overall they are playing like a typical Fetzer team.  PC should be a playoff team if they stick with the success they've been having with Buck and Fuller. No reason why PC shouldn't win this game.
Panthers 27 Huskies 7

Cambria Heights 1-2 at Central Cambria 0-3 Friday 7:00
Could it really be that Cambria Heights comes into Red Devil Stadium as the favorites? It just may be true. This is quite lopsided rivalry, but recent scores have shown the Highlanders have been playing the Devils tougher, and tougher each season.  Maybe this is the year they finally break through? The offense seems like it has enough play makers. Quarterback, Nathan Bearer went 0-3 passing last week, but still the offense was able to put up 34 points, and that can be attributed to the rushing game. Tyler Crawford is the workhorse, he has 55 carries for 263 yards and no touchdowns, but complimentary backs Donnie Contorchick and Ben Myers have combined for 258 yards and 5 touchdowns themselves.  Andrew Brawley and Myers have been the biggest threats through the air as well. These guys are young, and can play. Central Cambria needs to account for all of these guys. And that may be a problem. The Red Devils defense has surrendered 100 points  in three games so far. The Red Devils have not made the transition smooth for new head man, Sam Shutty.  The offense is struggling to find consistency as well. Scott Bellock provided his best game at Quarterback yet, but it was enough to overcome the Panthers of Penn Cambria. The host of Running Backs between McBreen, Paduga, and O'Saben have yet to come up with an individual 100 yard rushing game yet. There just isn't consistency and fluidity to their offense right now, and they need to find it quick if they want to preserve the season. I don't ever recall Central Cambria starting the year 0-3, let alone 0-4. But this is a distinct possibility.  Heights can play.  They have some backs and receivers, and may hold an athletic edge over the Devils.  I'm going with the Highlanders, but I do know the Red Devils will be revved up ready for a win.
Highlanders 20 Red Devils 14

Westmont 1-2 at Somerset 1-2 Friday 7:00
Westmont has played well this year actually. They have stood tall against Forest Hills and Johnstown. If you combine that with a win against Carroll to start the year, this means they started the season with three defending District 6 Champions.  That is a brutal way to start the year.  Also, take away the punt return and kick return, the Westy defense held the vaunted Johnstown offense to only three scores, and forced 6 turnovers, not that bad when you look into it. Ryan Burnheimer may be the unsung player of the whole league. He more less is the Westmont offense. He has to touch the ball at least 25 times a game, and he has responded with 390 yards to his credit. 130 yards a game and the other team knows he is getting the ball, pretty good in my opinion. Somerset had a rough week last week, but they still have some talent on the offensive side of the ball. Tanner Stull is a good looking player, along with Matt Boyer.  The Eagles can score on the ground and the air, but they need to be more consistent.  I have been preaching all along, they have talent in the sophomore class, they just need to patient with this bunch, It will help turn Somerset football around. But in this game, I look for Westmont's big and physical line to control the line of scrimmage.  The Eagles will see a heavy does of Burnheimer, and I am not sure they will stop him.  Look for another big game out of the kid, and maybe a few touchdowns this week.
Hilltoppers 28 Golden Eagles 13

Bishop McCort 3-0 at Bedford 2-1 Friday 7:00
Bedford may have surprised a few people last week.  They proved that they can score, and play in some shootouts.  Marcus Shippey was never known as a big time passer, either. And all he did was put up 248 yards and 4 Touchdowns against Richland. Luke Campbell and Dakota Hess have emerged as the top playmakers for the offense, and at the very least Bedford can score with some teams. They did give up 40 to Richland, but one advantage they will have over the Crushers this week, is the home field and natural grass field advantage. McCort isn't quite Johnstown fast, but they aren't very slow either. Wilson and Leech are fast, and this rainy weather will not help the quick strike ability McCort has shown, although the offense should still find room to move. Jesse Cooper is up to 459 yards through the air with 5 scores. The McCort rushing game has 4 kids that have made big impacts. I expect to see Varga,Belskey, and Wilson remain to see the majority of the carries, and maybe a guy like Trexler steps in and sees some more touches. They are dangerous on offense, but the defense has been the talk about this team. They have yet to allow a point through 3 games, but I think the Bedford offense is better than their first three opponents, and I think that streak will end. Bedford played well last week against a good Richland team, and that makes this game all the more intriguing,  I think McCort still wins, but I don't think Bedford makes it easy on them.

GAME OF THE WEEK
Richland (3-0) at Johnstown (3-0) Friday 7:00 Trojan Stadium

Two high powered offenses. Two undefeated teams. Two teams that are shooting for District Championships. It needs no more explanation. Richland either got caught looking ahead, or Bedford is better than we thought. We will find out Friday. Richland brings in a passing game led by two sophomores, and it has been working out surprisingly well. Matt Shaffer played considerably more last week than Nico Pecora, but through three weeks the two have combined for 682 yards and 9 Touchdowns.  Kyle Flick leads a good group of Richland receivers, and will be seeing a good amount of double teams Friday night. The kid is really athletic, and opens things up for the other receivers, Solarczyk and Hanley.  But the offense is centered around one guy, and that is John Rizzo. He is averaging 9 yards a carry and has racked up 523 yards and 5 touchdowns already.  He's a tough runner, and the Johnstown defense will have to step up and meet him in the hole. He is aggressive and will push forward for extra yards when he can.  He also leads the Richland defense, as he already has 5 sacks on the young season.  The Richland pass defense was exposed by Bedford a bit last week, off of screens and what not, but you do not want to show you are struggling in the secondary the week you are about to play the league's best passing attack.  And the Trojans have just that.  Gervon Simon had a forgettable game last week, committing 5 turnovers, but he still managed 255 yards and 2 TD's.  It wasn't a horrible day.  He leads the conference with 760 yards and 9 TD's through the air.  He will be looking to cut up the Richland secondary.  Tim Odum showed last week, that the Trojans running game is still existent. He is just another play maker you have to account for.  And of course the four receivers are as good as you will find. Watson and Andrews are already up over 200 yards, and Minter and Williams have made some big plays also. Both teams like to pass, Richland has a better running game, but their Coach is a passing guy. This game will be fun to watch, with athletes all over the field. Rizzo and Williams are arguably the two best players the LHAC has to offer.  You will be seeing some collisions both sides of the ball. I think you will see a lot of points. I think you will see some spectacular plays, and I think you will see a Johnstown victory.  Johnstown can score at will, and Richland is still coming off of giving up 36 points to Bedford.  This isn't the team you want to play after a tough defensive game.  I think this will be a shoot out, but Johnstown has a few more weapons in their arsenal.

Couch Potato's Guide September 15-19

10. Auburn at Clemson Saturday 12:00 ABC
Auburn has not lost a Football game since November 27, 2009. They barely survived Utah State and Mississippi State, but hey a win is a win.  Right?  Clemson is coming off a hard fought win over.....Wofford?  Well either way, Clemson will have a packed house. Auburn will probably slip away with another close win. predictable, but still worth watching.

9. Stanford at Arizona Saturday 10:45 ESPN
Well sometimes you just aren't quite ready for football Saturday to end, and usually the West Coast will give you that one late game to satisfy your cravings.  Stanford has Andrew Luck, watching him is worth tuning in.  Arizona's QB Nick Foles can also throw the ball.  Arizona will have a big crowd on hand, and Stanford better be on upset alert.  This will not be an easy game.

8. LSU at Mississippi State Thursday 8:00 ESPN
Mississippi State lost to Auburn by an inch, literally. They got stuffed on the one yard line.  Ouch.   LSU looks the part of legitimate championship contender.  This is the only game on TV on Thursday and you should tune in.  1. To see if LSU is really a contender and can take the pressure that comes with it and 2. If Mississippi State is really competitive in the SEC, and thirdly to see how poorly Les Miles will handle a close game, and still win anyway.

7. Utah and BYU Saturday 9:15 ESPN2
The Holy War.   The name alone tells how serious these people from Utah are about their football. For a very religious state, these teams really do not like each other. Both teams are coming off of devastatingly close loses and both teams are pretty good.  This has the makings of being one of the better games of the weekend.

6. Chargers at Patriots Sunday 4:15 CBS
Tom Brady threw for 517 yards on Monday Night Football.....Wait what?! The guy is the best in the business, period.  Its hard to find a flaw in his game. The Patriots are poised for another big season anyway you look at it, like it or not.  The Chargers looked good in their first game and look to forget about last year. They have one of the league weirdest distinctions ever.  They led the NFL in offense and defense last season, and didn't make the playoffs.  I can't even begin to fathom how that even happens. Oh and Phillip Rivers is a pretty good QB, too.  Could be a potential AFC Title game. So watch!

5. Tennessee at Florida Satirday 3:30 CBS
I really wish Kiffin and Meyer were still the coaches here.  That would make this rivalry so much better.  They hated each other, it was great.  But the game still has some luster.  Tennessee is coming off a convincing win over a desent Cincinnati team, and Florida is Florida.  Charlie Weis gets his crack at running a college offense, without having to run a college program.  The guy wasn't a head coach, but the dude knows his offense.  Only good things to come for the Gators.

4. Michigan State at Notre Dame 3:30 NBC
Last year's game....WOW.  Gutsy, heart wrenching call on the last play of the game.  Heck it even put Coach Dantonio in the hospital. When Michigan State and Notre Dame get together, good games occur. The famed 1966 battle was even dubbed the game of the Century.  Last year's game was just one of many classics in this rivalry.  Michigan State always seems to be a contender in September and this game goes a long way in deciding how their seasons goes.  Lately, Notre Dame has not been off to any hot starts  This game is usually big for them. Chances of Brian Kelly screaming in his player's faces again? Pretty good.  I'm going to tune in just to see that.

3. Eagles at Falcons Sunday 8:20 NBC
Well here it is, Michael Vick's return to Atlanta.  Get your popcorn ready.  This is a game that features two Super Bowl contenders, that alone should be worth tuning in.  The fact that Atlanta's former most popular athlete is returning is another reason to watch. Vick went up in flames in Atlanta.  It was bad.  He's reinvented himself and is at the top of his game.  The Eagles offense can fly, and Matt Ryan runs a pretty good show in Atlanta.  Very good game.

2. Ohio State at Miami Saturday 7:30 ESPN

Ahh, the game that should simply be known as, "The Integrity Bowl."  The Buckeyes met the Canes in the Championship way back in 2002, and many of those guys went on to be pretty good NFL players.  I just wonder if they had to take a paycut after leaving OSU and Miami?   This game has lost its luster, because well, suspensions happened, Tressel got fired, and Terrelle Pryor is now on the Oakland Raiders. But other than that the game will feature some good athletes. Jacory Harris will be making his season debut for the Hurricanes, as they come off a tough loss to Maryland.  And OSU almost lost to....Toledo!?  Ohhh how the mighty have fallen.  I'm going to watch because these are two programs I don't mind that they are suffering

1. Oklahoma at Florida State Saturday 8:00 ABC

Nothing like a Top 5 Game to highlight the weekend.  Oklahoma has a high powered offense that absolutely destroyed the 'Noles last season. That was in Norman.  This game is in Tallahassee. There is a buzz back surrounding the FSU program.  They are winning recruiting battles left and right, and they are ready for primetime again. This game has big, big, big National Championship implications.  Both teams are capable of getting there, but one will be eliminated from contention on Saturday night. And damn this is one of the most bad ass traditions in college football...

LHAC Football Forecast Week 3.

Last Week I racked up a 5-1 week taking me to a 9-3 overall mark.  My only miss was picking Central Cambria.  Things we have learned through two weeks.......Football in Ebensburg is due for a long season, Central Cambria and Bishop Carroll have really struggled thus far. The panic in Sidman can stop now, the Rangers are back on the right track.  Of the four remaining undefeated teams left in the league, all four are in Section II, Johnstown, Richland, Bishop McCort, and Bedford.

Somerset 1-1 at Bishop McCort 2-0 Friday 7:00
Somerset was able to end their 14 game losing streak last Friday.  They are using a balanced attack on offense led by two sophomores.  Quarterback Tanner Stull has already connected for 250 yards through the air and 86 yards on the ground.  He is a talented player with a bright future down the line.  Sophomore Tailback, Matt Boyer has tallied 184 yards and five touchdowns in two games as well.  Coach Miller has slowly started to change the culture at Somerset, and with two talented sophomores, the wins should be more frequent soon enough.  Bishop McCort has been about the quick strike early in the season. The Crushers have scored Touchdowns of 20 plus yards 6 times already.  The key to it all is balance, Quarterback Jesse Cooper has tossed 4 Touchdowns already along with 286 yards. The Crushers rushing attack is led by Varga (122 yds 2TDs) and Belskey (76 yds and 2 TDs). The weapons don't stop there Jerqual Wilson, Christian Leech and Jordan Spangler have contributed offensively, and do not forget about the McCort defense, which has yet to allow a point this season.  The Crushers have been rolling early on this season, and look to continue their winning ways Friday.  Somerset is on their way, but not there just yet.  McCort has been really good at taking advantage of turnovers, and Friday should be no different.  McCort's experience and overall talent outweighs that of Somerset. The Crushers continue to cruise...
Crimson Crushers 42 Golden Eagles 7.

Johnstown 2-0 at Westmont 1-1 Saturday 1:00
Well Westmont may not be in the Laurel Highlands's elite, but they at least seem to be competitive this season. Westmont is a team led by a strong running back in Ryan Burnheimer. He has 266 yards and 3 touchdowns on the young season. He is the team's workhorse and the offense revolves around him. Senior Quarterback Joe Glennon has improved from last year and help gives the team another element on offense.  Westmont has strong line play and plays against the run very well, problem being, Johnstown will not be running very much.  The Trojans bring their lethal aerial assault to the grass of Price Field.  One of  Westmont's hopes lie in the grass surface, maybe the Trojans offense won't run as quick on a natural surface.  I wouldn't count on it.  Field general, Gervon Simon has picked up this season where he left last season, on fire.  He's already put up 505 yards and 7 Touchdowns through the air.  He continues to spread the wealth around as three receivers have already eclipsed the 100 yard mark.  The Trojans still do not have a strong running game, which can hurt them down the line. But as it stands now, if nobody can stop the pass, than why run? I think Johnstown's defense will be able slow Burnheimer, and I do not think the Westmont defense will be able to slow down Simon.  Trojans should be lighting up the scoreboard on Saturday afternoon.
Trojans 41 Hilltoppers 14

Bishop Carroll 0-2 at Forest Hills 1-1 Friday 7:00
For a team that returned six starters on offense, Bishop Carroll had higher hopes for the 2011 season.  Well things are not working out quite as planned.  Through two weeks, the Huskies are fading fast and looking for answers. Josh Barzdo has been tried out at Running Back, while handing over the QB reigns to Ryan Laurer and the offensive struggles continued.  For a team that returned four offensive linemen from a championship team, the inconsistent line play appears to be most troubling.  Committing five turnovers last week did themselves few favors as well.  The Huskies need to establish a Quaterback, and get Barzdo the best situation to make plays. He is their best player, and maybe keeping him at Running Back is the answer.  Forest Hills was able to get back on track, and they were able to get back on track through the air. Gdula was really hurried against Richland, but on Saturday was able to set up and pick up 241 yards with 2 touchdowns to raise his season totals to 395 yards and 3 TDs.  The rushing game also got going on Saturday as well. Shawn Dell has been doing a nice job for Forest Hills as the are still without Anthony Unger on offense.  The Rangers should win this game for several reasons. Bishop Carroll is reeling, and things are not looking good on Husky Hill.  They need to establish some positions still and its already Week Three.   Forest Hills' offense played better up front against Westmont and allowed their passing game to get established. The Rangers should expose the Huskies' weakness up front and control the line of scrimmage, and if BC wants any chance this week, they can not fumble the ball five times.  Give me the Rangers, big.   After one slip up, they are capable of running off a number of wins.
Rangers 35 Huskies 10

Bedford 2-0 at Richland 2-0 Friday 7:00
In this week's only matchup featuring two undefeated teams, Bedford travels up to Richland. Bedford comes into this game fairly untested and will see one of the league's premier teams.  Bedford's hopes rely with their senior playmaker, Marcus Shippey. He comes into the game as a dual threat with two touchdowns in the air and two more on the ground. He will be key for anything Bedford does. Aaron Henry and Dakota Hess will be counted on to make plays and take some of the stress off of Shippey. The Bedford defense has done well through two games, but they have not seen the kind of offense the Richland Rams possess. Everything starts and runs through senior running back, Johnny Rizzo. He already has 294 yards and 3 touchdowns on the ground, and is complimented nicely by Luke Rozich on the ground.  The two quarterback system usually hides the fact that you do not have one clear cut player, but in Richland's case, they have two very capable players.  Pecora and Shaffer have basically given equal efforts so far and they have combined for 400 yards and 6 touchdowns through the air. I'm thinking Bailey will stick with both of them as long as it works.  It makes their job easier to have receivers like Flick and Solarczyk.  The Richland offense has been hitting on all points right now, and for once, they can beat you with the run and the pass.  This team is playing well, and playing with confidence.  Bedford has guys that have been around, but I just don't think they have the athletes to match across the field.  Shippey will make some plays, but not nearly enough.  I look for Richland's passing game to continue its success, and another workmanlike effort for Rizzo on the ground to result in a Richland victory.
Rams 35 Bisons 13

Bishop Guilfoyle 0-2 at Cambria Heights 0-2 Friday 7:00
The young Marauders enter this game being outscored 72-13, and for a team that has sustained so many injuries its a good thing it isn't any worse. BG has some good solid young players, but this team is not ready to compete in the LHAC just yet. Maybe when these freshmen and sophomores, turn to juniors and seniors you will have something. Pat Irwin leads the offense and a host of running backs have been taking turns including two freshmen, DJ Kitt and Brenden Chadbourn.  Last week was rough due to them playing in a mud bowl down in Bedford, I expect the Marauders to at least show more on offense.  Heights enters this game as the favorite, not the usual case for the Highlanders. But Cambria Heights has some offensive weapons. Nate Bearer has done a very good job replacing Vescovi, while Ben Myers and Andrew Brawley have been reliable targets. Tyler Crawford has done a nice job handling the running game.  Heights was playing with Richland for about a quarter until the Rams flexed their muscles, but the point being is that Heights has remained competitive without Vescovi, and not many were expecting that.  I think Guilfoyle will play well, but Cambria Heights has too many athletes for them to account for.  All the names I mentioned for the Highlanders are juniors, just something to keep an eye on.
Highlanders 28 Marauders 14

GAME OF THE WEEK
Central Cambria 0-2 at Penn Cambria 1-1 Friday 7:00
Well Central Cambria is not having their best year, but this game is game of the week for two reasons. This game has been settled by a total of Six points over the past three meetings, and the game is a big rivalry for the two schools.  Penn Cambria has bested their rivals from Ebensburg the past three meetings, and Central Cambria has revenge on their minds.  They also have getting into the win column on their minds as well, as the Devils got off to an uncharacteristically slow start. The Red Devil's defesne has been on the field quite a bit as turnovers have been a big thorn in their side.  Senior Quarterback, Scott Bellock needs to do a better job of taking care of the ball. Steve Papuga and Stephen O'Saben have not seen the ball out of the backfield much, but they are averaging the most yardage when they touch the ball. The Red Devils may have to find more ways to get them the ball. Penn Cambria comes into the game 1-1. They are a typical Fetzer team, meaning they run the ball and they do not run anything flashy.  Its straight at you football, with a little bit of passing mixed in. Physical senior QB, Andrew Buck anchors the offense along with Jordan Fuller. They both are the primary ball carriers and workhorses of the offense. Buck has been throwing more than last year, proving that his coach has confidence with him there.  The Panthers defense is usually stout and this year is no different. They led Johnstown for a quarter last week, and they are capable of being a playoff team.  This game should be worth the price of admission, especially if it rains on Thursday like it is supposed to.  This game with a muddy field will be very entertaining, and the passing would be at a minimum either way.  Central Cambria has plenty to play for, they have not played well in their first two games and they owe Penn Cambria for some recent close losses.  Penn Cambria is the better team, and they should win. But it will be close. At least I think it will.
Panthers 15 Red Devils 13

Couch Potato's Guide September 8-12

10.  Nevada at Oregon Saturday 3:30 FX

Well things did not go according to plan for the Ducks in week 1.  They lost to a team with plain uniforms, and they lost by two touchdowns.  What happened?! Maybe the SEC is their kryptonite? Well here's why you should watch this one.  Oregon runs a spread, they score lots of points. Nevada runs a spread they score lots of points. You do the math.

9. Arizona at Oklahoma State Thursday 8:00 ESPN
Well if the NFL does nothing for you, watch this game.  Oklahoma State can really score.  Brandon Weeden and Justin Blackmon is a great dynamic duo.  And if you haven't heard of Arizona's Quarterback, Nick Foles, well you should definitely tune in.  He gets lost in the shuffle of the other Pac-12 Quarterbacks, but is a star.

8. Missouri at Arizona State Friday 10:30 ESPN
Well if you are a shut in and do not go out on Fridays, or you are just a plain ole' football junkie, than here's a great Friday Night game. It seems ESPN put on a slightly better lineup of Friday games, you know like last week TCU-Baylor, unbelievable!  Tough act to follow. But I think its time Arizona State busts these bad boys out...

7. South Carolina at Georgia Saturday 4:30 ESPN
It is beyond me why teams play conference games in September? But their loss is our gain.  South Carolina has two players on offense that are future first round picks that are absolute animals.  Marcus Lattimore and Alshon Jeffrey are the real deal, check them out.  Oh, and it should be intriguing to see if Georgia can win a big game, Mark Richt's seat is getting really warm right now.....

6. Alabama at Penn State Saturday 3:30 ABC
Well the Tide took it to the Lions last year, and many of the same faces are back both sides. So why is this a game I should be watching?  Well simple, Penn State is clearly outmatched from a talent standpoint, but Beaver Stadium is a difference maker. Only problem for the White out is that the game is at 3:30......those four extra hours of tailgating might get things rocking a bit more..

5. Cowboys at Jets Sunday 8:30 NBC
Ah yes, the NFL. I can't believe ESPN let NBC get this game, with their constant obsession over these two teams.  Either way, this game should be big. The Jets have geared up for another run at a Super Bowl. Rex Ryan is eventually going to be right if he keeps predicting a Super Bowl, well at least that is the route he is taking.

4. Utah at USC Saturday 7:30 VS.
Quietly, this is one of the better games of the week. Again, the whole conference game in September thing, but whatever.  The Pac 12 South may ultimately be decided right here. This is Utah's first game in the new league, and they get rewarded with a trip to the Colosseum. I have sympathy for the Utes, and hope they do not rip out their ear drums after the 6 millionth time they have to listen to the USC fight song.  But keep an eye on Matt Barkley, and apparently Robert Woods who has 17 receptions after one game!?  Big ups to him.

3. Notre Dame at Michigan Saturday 8:00 ESPN
I almost didn't put this game on here at all, due to Lou Holtz's clear and annoying bias for the Irish. But either way, this is a big game.  Notre Dame lost a "lengthy" game to South Florida, while Michigan won a rain shortened game against Western Michigan.  But for the game itself, ND has a QB controversy, and things do not look quite as bright as they did in the preseason.  Michigan still has high hopes, and those hopes rest with Denard Robinson.  Hope Brady Hoke lets him run wild, no need to prove a point.

2. Steelers at Ravens Sunday 1:00 CBS
Really NFL, the best rivalry in the whole league has to play Week 1?!  Terrible scheduling to say the least.  But this game will still be worth watching even though it will not be 30 degrees with snow on the ground.  And these two teams are matched so similarly it is really scary.  Harrison-Lewis, Reed-Polamalu, Mendenhall-Rice, Suggs-Woodley ect ect.  They run the same stuff, they win the same way, and they hate each other.  Great matchup, horrible timing.  But you best be watching.

1. Saints at Packers Thursday 8:30 NBC
Well here it is everyone, the kick off to the NFL season.  And did anyone honestly think they would still be striking at this point?  Please NFL, we aren't that dumb.  But this is quite the game to start with, Brees and Rodgers are two guys at the top of their game, and they are the past two Super Bowl Champions.  No brainer to tune in.  Should be a good one...

LHAC Football Forecast Week 2.

Well last week I mustered a 4-2 record, and learned a few things about the league.  Forest Hills and Bishop Carroll did lose a lot from last year, more than most realized. Richland will go as far as Rizzo will take them, and right now that is looking pretty far.  Westmont may not be a pushover for a change. And well Johnstown is looking really hard to beat this season.

Cambria Heights (0-1) AT Richland (1-0) Friday 7:00
Well needless to say Richland came out and shocked a lot of people.  Brandon Bailey got the monkey off his back and finally beat his Dad.  The Rams played a complete football game offensively and defensively.  Johnny Rizzo stole the show with 161 yards rushing and two touchdowns. And the saying goes when you have three quarterbacks, you have no quarterbacks.  That does not appear to be the case as Pecora, Shaffer, and Rizzo all managed the game well and found deep threat, Kyle Flick for a big score.  Defensively, to hold a Forest Hills team to -7 yards rushing is an accomplishment that probably has not occurred too often. Cambria Heights scored three touchdowns, but also gave up three touchdowns.  The key was that they could not convert on the two point conversions.  Heights remains to be a competitive team through the coaching change, but still the little things are what hurt this team. Bearer did a nice job in his first start, and the playmakers, Myers,Brawley, and Crawford did their jobs.  Heights has a tall task ahead of themselves.  They are going into a Richland team that is flying high, and will be playing with a ton of confidence.  I do not see the Highlanders being able to slow down Rizzo, and even if they do, Kyle Flick is emerging as one of the league's premier receiving threats.  Richland is looking tough.

Central Cambria (0-1)  At Somerset (0-1) Friday 7:00
The tale was very different for these two squads last week. Both debuted new coaches, but the results were very different.  Central Cambria was humbled by Bishop McCort, whereas Somerset battled to a close loss with Penn Cambria.  The loss marked the 14th straight for the Somerset program, but coach Bob Landis has things pointing in the right direction.  Sophomore, Quarterback Tanner Stull has a very bright future ahead of himself, and may be the Eagles best player already.  If he can continue to make plays with his legs, the Eagles will have some chances this season.  Central Cambria was unable to get anything going against Bishop McCort.  The key there was the offensive line, they gave no push which resulted in a long night on offense.  Stephen O'Saben was able to find some room to run at times, and will need to be able to do more of that. Bellock threw two interceptions at QB, and needs to be more consistent.  This game will be very interesting.  Central Cambria has some playmakers, but need to get their line in order.  Somerset is young and possesses some talented athletes. I'm going to take Central Cambria because I believe they are better than what they showed last week, O'Saben will make some big plays in a close one.

Bishop Guilfoyle 0-1at Bedford 1-0 Friday 7:00
Bishop Guilfoyle is in a tough spot. They will be without at least six starters for this game, and what appeared to be a rebuilding year might just be a bad year.  The Marauders have a good play caller in Pat Irwin, but have a lot of young kids in key spots.  The future is definitely bright with only seven seniors on the roster, but it may take a while for things to get rolling.  Bedford is coming off a hard fought victory over Cambria Heights.   After the talk of moving Shippey to Running Back,  he responded with one of the best passing games in his career.  He tallied two touchdowns of 40 yards or better and orchestrated a comeback victory on the road.  The Bisons have some solid backs to compliment the passing game, and the Hess brothers should put together productive years.  Injuries to small schools are devastating, if six starters are really out for BG, it will be nearly impossible for them to sustain a lot of success.  Bedford should win this game, they have depth, size, and experience on the Marauders.  I look for Bedford to rely on the running game a little bit more.

Penn Cambria 1-0 at Johnstown 1-0 Friday 7:00
Both teams enter this game with 1-0 records, but went completely different routes to get here. Johnstown, undoubtedly is the top team around, and proved it on Saturday by piling up 41 points in the first half.  Gervon Simon time in and time again has shown the ability to beat you with his legs and arm. The rushing game was shared by a number of ball carriers, and the deadly foursome of receivers all made big plays.  And the defense did not allow much either. So basically when you play this team, good luck.  Penn Cambria needed all four quarters to fend off Somerset.  Uncharacteristically, the Panthers used the passing game, and it had mixed results. Their best option remains on the ground, and the best threats are Jordan Fuller and Andrew Buck. PC always has a tough defense under Fetzer, but their work is cut out for them this game. The Trojans aren't unbeatable, but beating them will seem impossible at times.  Penn Cambria does not have the athletes to compete with Johnstown in this game. Gervon Simon will likely put up another huge statistical game, as the Trojans march on.

Forest Hills (0-1) at Westmont (1-0) Saturday 1:00
It is not very often when Westmont and Forest Hills meet, that the Hilltoppers have the better record.  Well this is one of the few times you will see that.  Forest Hills was exposed pretty badly against Richland, and Coach Bailey will be going back to the drawing board.  Gdula was running for his life most of the night, and had a very uncharacteristic tough game, as did the entire Rangers team.  The typical power running game was not in effect, and concerns on the offensive line are real.  The Rangers need to get back to what they do best, control the line of scrimmage and run the ball. Whether it be Dell, or freshmen Shareef Blough.  The offense needs to find a consistent source of offense, and Gdula will need better pass protection.  Westmont came into this season with the daunting task of playing three defending district champions, and they got off on the right foot.   The Hilltoppers put the ball in Ryan Burnheimer's hands quite a bit, and he responded with a 161 yard, 3 touchdown game. Westmont will use a similar attack this game to challenge the Forest Hills line.  Westmont will be aided by athletes Alex Intihar and Liam Moran on the outside if they need to pass.  I think this will be a very good game, and a real gut check for the Rangers. This was a team that was expected to compete for a District Championship, and that looks to be in question at this point.  I'm going to take the Rangers in a bounce back game, but I will not be shocked if Westmont can take them down.

GAME OF THE WEEK
Bishop Carroll (0-1) at Bishop McCort (1-0) Friday 7:00
Bishop Carroll was exposed by Westmont last week. Many thought the Huskies would be able to pick off where they left off. Barzdo was back, along with most of the offensive line, but the Huskies missed the speed threat by Ryan Woo.  Barzdo was never noted for passing, and it seems he still does not excel in that area.  Until a passing threat emerges, teams will continue to key in on the run.  Barzdo has great escape ability, but needs somebody to step up so he can pitch it off.  Speedy junior Ryan Laurer, may have to take on different roles to get him the ball.  The Line did not hold its own against Westmont, and will need to better this week.  Bishop McCort, on the other hand, used a balanced attack, highlighted by some big plays to steamroll over Central Cambria.  Jesse Cooper tossed three long touchdown passes, and Zach Varga headed a solid running game for the Crushers.  Christian Leech had a career game with two 80 yard touchdowns, and an interception.  You can expect McCort to use the pass again. The Crusher Defensive line, and Linebackers played an outstanding game.  Gap Barbin, Zach Rugg, and Christian Roman stuffed plenty of Central Cambria's plays, which led to the shutout. I think this game comes down to many different stories. Will Bishop Carroll's line play better?  Will BC find another playmaker to go with Barzdo? Can McCort's defensive front continue to clog running lanes? Will McCort's big play threat remain?   I think McCort's Defensive line is really good, and for a team that struggled as much as Carroll did last week, that is not good news.  I am taking McCort in a battle that pits the past two District 6 Champions.  Look for the two "little" playmakers on both sides to make some noise, and by that I mean McCort's Jerqual Wilson (5-7) and Ryan Laurer(5-6) for the Huskies.
