LHAC Football Forecast Week 3.

Last Week I racked up a 5-1 week taking me to a 9-3 overall mark.  My only miss was picking Central Cambria.  Things we have learned through two weeks.......Football in Ebensburg is due for a long season, Central Cambria and Bishop Carroll have really struggled thus far. The panic in Sidman can stop now, the Rangers are back on the right track.  Of the four remaining undefeated teams left in the league, all four are in Section II, Johnstown, Richland, Bishop McCort, and Bedford.

Somerset 1-1 at Bishop McCort 2-0 Friday 7:00
Somerset was able to end their 14 game losing streak last Friday.  They are using a balanced attack on offense led by two sophomores.  Quarterback Tanner Stull has already connected for 250 yards through the air and 86 yards on the ground.  He is a talented player with a bright future down the line.  Sophomore Tailback, Matt Boyer has tallied 184 yards and five touchdowns in two games as well.  Coach Miller has slowly started to change the culture at Somerset, and with two talented sophomores, the wins should be more frequent soon enough.  Bishop McCort has been about the quick strike early in the season. The Crushers have scored Touchdowns of 20 plus yards 6 times already.  The key to it all is balance, Quarterback Jesse Cooper has tossed 4 Touchdowns already along with 286 yards. The Crushers rushing attack is led by Varga (122 yds 2TDs) and Belskey (76 yds and 2 TDs). The weapons don't stop there Jerqual Wilson, Christian Leech and Jordan Spangler have contributed offensively, and do not forget about the McCort defense, which has yet to allow a point this season.  The Crushers have been rolling early on this season, and look to continue their winning ways Friday.  Somerset is on their way, but not there just yet.  McCort has been really good at taking advantage of turnovers, and Friday should be no different.  McCort's experience and overall talent outweighs that of Somerset. The Crushers continue to cruise...
Crimson Crushers 42 Golden Eagles 7.

Johnstown 2-0 at Westmont 1-1 Saturday 1:00
Well Westmont may not be in the Laurel Highlands's elite, but they at least seem to be competitive this season. Westmont is a team led by a strong running back in Ryan Burnheimer. He has 266 yards and 3 touchdowns on the young season. He is the team's workhorse and the offense revolves around him. Senior Quarterback Joe Glennon has improved from last year and help gives the team another element on offense.  Westmont has strong line play and plays against the run very well, problem being, Johnstown will not be running very much.  The Trojans bring their lethal aerial assault to the grass of Price Field.  One of  Westmont's hopes lie in the grass surface, maybe the Trojans offense won't run as quick on a natural surface.  I wouldn't count on it.  Field general, Gervon Simon has picked up this season where he left last season, on fire.  He's already put up 505 yards and 7 Touchdowns through the air.  He continues to spread the wealth around as three receivers have already eclipsed the 100 yard mark.  The Trojans still do not have a strong running game, which can hurt them down the line. But as it stands now, if nobody can stop the pass, than why run? I think Johnstown's defense will be able slow Burnheimer, and I do not think the Westmont defense will be able to slow down Simon.  Trojans should be lighting up the scoreboard on Saturday afternoon.
Trojans 41 Hilltoppers 14

Bishop Carroll 0-2 at Forest Hills 1-1 Friday 7:00
For a team that returned six starters on offense, Bishop Carroll had higher hopes for the 2011 season.  Well things are not working out quite as planned.  Through two weeks, the Huskies are fading fast and looking for answers. Josh Barzdo has been tried out at Running Back, while handing over the QB reigns to Ryan Laurer and the offensive struggles continued.  For a team that returned four offensive linemen from a championship team, the inconsistent line play appears to be most troubling.  Committing five turnovers last week did themselves few favors as well.  The Huskies need to establish a Quaterback, and get Barzdo the best situation to make plays. He is their best player, and maybe keeping him at Running Back is the answer.  Forest Hills was able to get back on track, and they were able to get back on track through the air. Gdula was really hurried against Richland, but on Saturday was able to set up and pick up 241 yards with 2 touchdowns to raise his season totals to 395 yards and 3 TDs.  The rushing game also got going on Saturday as well. Shawn Dell has been doing a nice job for Forest Hills as the are still without Anthony Unger on offense.  The Rangers should win this game for several reasons. Bishop Carroll is reeling, and things are not looking good on Husky Hill.  They need to establish some positions still and its already Week Three.   Forest Hills' offense played better up front against Westmont and allowed their passing game to get established. The Rangers should expose the Huskies' weakness up front and control the line of scrimmage, and if BC wants any chance this week, they can not fumble the ball five times.  Give me the Rangers, big.   After one slip up, they are capable of running off a number of wins.
Rangers 35 Huskies 10

Bedford 2-0 at Richland 2-0 Friday 7:00
In this week's only matchup featuring two undefeated teams, Bedford travels up to Richland. Bedford comes into this game fairly untested and will see one of the league's premier teams.  Bedford's hopes rely with their senior playmaker, Marcus Shippey. He comes into the game as a dual threat with two touchdowns in the air and two more on the ground. He will be key for anything Bedford does. Aaron Henry and Dakota Hess will be counted on to make plays and take some of the stress off of Shippey. The Bedford defense has done well through two games, but they have not seen the kind of offense the Richland Rams possess. Everything starts and runs through senior running back, Johnny Rizzo. He already has 294 yards and 3 touchdowns on the ground, and is complimented nicely by Luke Rozich on the ground.  The two quarterback system usually hides the fact that you do not have one clear cut player, but in Richland's case, they have two very capable players.  Pecora and Shaffer have basically given equal efforts so far and they have combined for 400 yards and 6 touchdowns through the air. I'm thinking Bailey will stick with both of them as long as it works.  It makes their job easier to have receivers like Flick and Solarczyk.  The Richland offense has been hitting on all points right now, and for once, they can beat you with the run and the pass.  This team is playing well, and playing with confidence.  Bedford has guys that have been around, but I just don't think they have the athletes to match across the field.  Shippey will make some plays, but not nearly enough.  I look for Richland's passing game to continue its success, and another workmanlike effort for Rizzo on the ground to result in a Richland victory.
Rams 35 Bisons 13

Bishop Guilfoyle 0-2 at Cambria Heights 0-2 Friday 7:00
The young Marauders enter this game being outscored 72-13, and for a team that has sustained so many injuries its a good thing it isn't any worse. BG has some good solid young players, but this team is not ready to compete in the LHAC just yet. Maybe when these freshmen and sophomores, turn to juniors and seniors you will have something. Pat Irwin leads the offense and a host of running backs have been taking turns including two freshmen, DJ Kitt and Brenden Chadbourn.  Last week was rough due to them playing in a mud bowl down in Bedford, I expect the Marauders to at least show more on offense.  Heights enters this game as the favorite, not the usual case for the Highlanders. But Cambria Heights has some offensive weapons. Nate Bearer has done a very good job replacing Vescovi, while Ben Myers and Andrew Brawley have been reliable targets. Tyler Crawford has done a nice job handling the running game.  Heights was playing with Richland for about a quarter until the Rams flexed their muscles, but the point being is that Heights has remained competitive without Vescovi, and not many were expecting that.  I think Guilfoyle will play well, but Cambria Heights has too many athletes for them to account for.  All the names I mentioned for the Highlanders are juniors, just something to keep an eye on.
Highlanders 28 Marauders 14

GAME OF THE WEEK
Central Cambria 0-2 at Penn Cambria 1-1 Friday 7:00
Well Central Cambria is not having their best year, but this game is game of the week for two reasons. This game has been settled by a total of Six points over the past three meetings, and the game is a big rivalry for the two schools.  Penn Cambria has bested their rivals from Ebensburg the past three meetings, and Central Cambria has revenge on their minds.  They also have getting into the win column on their minds as well, as the Devils got off to an uncharacteristically slow start. The Red Devil's defesne has been on the field quite a bit as turnovers have been a big thorn in their side.  Senior Quarterback, Scott Bellock needs to do a better job of taking care of the ball. Steve Papuga and Stephen O'Saben have not seen the ball out of the backfield much, but they are averaging the most yardage when they touch the ball. The Red Devils may have to find more ways to get them the ball. Penn Cambria comes into the game 1-1. They are a typical Fetzer team, meaning they run the ball and they do not run anything flashy.  Its straight at you football, with a little bit of passing mixed in. Physical senior QB, Andrew Buck anchors the offense along with Jordan Fuller. They both are the primary ball carriers and workhorses of the offense. Buck has been throwing more than last year, proving that his coach has confidence with him there.  The Panthers defense is usually stout and this year is no different. They led Johnstown for a quarter last week, and they are capable of being a playoff team.  This game should be worth the price of admission, especially if it rains on Thursday like it is supposed to.  This game with a muddy field will be very entertaining, and the passing would be at a minimum either way.  Central Cambria has plenty to play for, they have not played well in their first two games and they owe Penn Cambria for some recent close losses.  Penn Cambria is the better team, and they should win. But it will be close. At least I think it will.
Panthers 15 Red Devils 13
